Who owns the world's rice? (http://www.indiatogether.org/2005/sep/dsh-ricepat.htm)

This theft on a massive scale. We need to feel very, very, very worried about this. I personally, will not buy another grain of rice ever again if it means that my money goes into the pockets of Syngenta.

It doesn't say anything about Organic Rice - which I sell, so everyone could just buy Rice off me instead! (y)

It's all rice. Which means that if you are not joking and you do sell rice, organic or otherwise, you will have to buy it from Syngenta, which means it definitely will NOT be organic.

Did it say that? I read it differently...

I'll read it again, cus there are about 100 suppliers of the stuff who have just had all their organic certifications removed from one article. (the ones I have are UK2 and UK4 : LMS/1/97). So that also means that the bodies that hand out organic certificates have also been put out of business...

I read it again and it still says 'seeking' the patents

Sorry I read your reply wrong

If Organic Rice ceased to exist, I wouldn't sell rice.

And why would I joke about rice?

That someone is trying to take over all the rice.

I'll tell you a good rice sub, which is nicer and better for you is Quinoa. Cooks quicker than rice to. So everyone can just buy Quinoa off me instead.

This is the sort of shit that happens when big companies genetically modify a product which would otherwise grow naturally. Say they have their field of genetically modified maize, and they have a patent on that particular variant. Seeds blow from the GM product and cross pollinate with another, non-GM product. Now as the product of this cross pollination would carry the GM gene that is patented by the corporate giant, the corporate giant could legitimately demand a cut of the profits made from the sale of that product. It's like a domino effect.

If this sort of thing continues, giants like Monsanto could pretty much hold the world to ransom for the food they will ultimately control....of course that is an exteme "possibility", but things like price fixing are already going on with these companies.

I remember reading about Monsanto trying to sue some farmer after his organic crops were contaminated with Monsantos GM crop. The farmer then counter-sued them for destroying his organic crops and ruining his business. I never followed up on the case though and I don't know what the verdict was.
