Who else has seen this? Thoughts?

If you haven't seen it, DO SO.

It's basically just 2 hours of McNamara sitting down, talking to the camera. But what he has to say about the major events he was a part of (WW2, Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam) is invaluable. It gives you an excellent look into what was going through his mind during the '60s and how he looks upon that now.

I also think his "lessons" should be implemented today. They're quite sound.

As a historical document, it is certainly invaluable, IMO. Yes, there is hindsight, but I got the impression that he was striving for truth, irrespective of the shortfall. The "behind the scenes" commentary is the critical thing, I think.

There's a commentary on the DVD?

P.S. - Interestingly enough, if you have the new Dr. Strangelove DVD, they have McNamara talking M.A.D. and everything else on the Special Features portion. Man, that guy never stops talking. :)

Urm, no, I meant it was a commentary from behind the scenes, RE WW2 and Vietnam. Hearing the story first-hand, rather than from historians trying to assemble it from what was said by the contemporary media.

Hearing it from the horse's mouth was important.

I'm sure that your opinion, oh King Ace, is completely unbiased in this matter  .

Anyhow....McNamara being a hero to you is rather funny, as he was the one who IMPLEMENTED much of the Vietnam fiasco. Your true colors are showing, ace, as a reactionary left-wing, anti-US spewing faucet of hate and fear-mongering.

Boy, I can't WAIT for your next post so I can be enlightened as to how great the wisdom you spew is..... ;) :p

I saw it with some friends and they really loved it. There wasn't anything in there I didn't know, but I've read a lot more about McNamara and Vietnam than the average person.

It was far better than the one that accused Kissinger as a war criminal. That one presented the history in a confusing way.

P.S. I once got a job because at the interview I was asked what book I was reading and I was reading McNamara's. The employer asked me questions about it and we got into a bit of an argument. Much to my surprise he hired me. Seems he liked having underlings who challenged him. :)
