I'd like to know how's your expectations about the World Cup next year. I know Americans arent big fans of footbal (soccer) but since there are people from all over the world in this MB I think a discussion about the most popular game in the world would be nice. I want to know if you guys think your country will do fine on the Cup and how long you think they will go. Also what players you expect will be decisive on the matches and anything related to football.

As a Brazilian football geek I gotta say, Brasil, go get'em and bring the "taça" (trophy) for the 6th time. :)

PS: I think the US team a very good team. They're doing just fine the past years. (y)

Englands gonna win.

I think Germany will do a good job. And the fact thats its gonna be an England v Germany final means the chant, 'two world wars and one world cup' will have to be changed!

There is only one team in Europe (worth mentioning)

I've applied for World Cup final tickets twice and have been rejected both times (they are doing like a lottery). Now I don't really have the money aside to make such a purchase anymore :(

I hope the Rep. Of Ireland qualify. I've always liked them and Holland are a team I like to see do well, all after England obviously.

You remember the last encounter between Brasil and the English Team right? :D

And I gotta disagrree. The final will be Brasil VS any of the 31 teams left

And I'd like to see a final England x Brasil

no soccer is not very popular here,,, they were forced to play their qualifier against mexico in columbus, ohio in order to not have their fans outnumbered by the mexican fans. soccer is never on regular TV and gets no coverage in sports highlights.

the U.S. has more than just donovan, and adu so far hasnt shown much in the mls or the U-17 matches his been a part of.

Fuck knows why the winner of the Oceania group has to beat the fifth placed South American team qualify, instead of having a direct qualification place like every other fucking group.

Uruguay, though. I hope its not a repeat of 4 years ago where we were 1-0 up after the first leg and got beaten 3-0 in Montevideo.

Or 4 years before that when we won 1-0 (?) against Iran in the away leg, and we let two goals through late in the 2nd half at home.

Guarda che io tifo per l'Italia :p

Usually people watch the games here with friends, dressed in orange and normally with large amounts of beer.

Thing is, when a european cup or world cup starts suddenly everyone is a football fan. I was watching a euro 2000 game in an irish pub and was talking to some irish people about this while the rest of the pub was stacked with people dressed in orange, their faces painted in orange and weird hats and wigs on. I told the irish people that they only got like this once every two years and that 90% of the people that were in there normally didn't even follow football. One dutch woman (dressed in orange... face painted... orange wig...) overheard us, nearly spat out her drink and gave us a guilty nod.

Every excuse is good for a party I guess...

The thing with Irish, most of the players come to the Premiership rather than staying in Ireland. So the Irish league never has chance to develop, but the Irish will support anythng Irish. But wouldn't want to be seen to be following the English in Anyway cus Irish really don't like English and would want see England lose at anything and probably just sink. Apart from when the British and Irish Lions are playing.

Anyway, that is why the Irish don't go crazy for it all the time. And why they like Gaelic Football. Which is crazy confusing for me!

a picture (http://simpler-solutions.net/pmachinefree/images/uploads/gaelic.JPG) paints 1000 words. They pick it up and run with it. But it round like a football and unlike Aussie Rules (I think) and American football. And they have about 8 targets to hit to get points...

It's a bit rough also.

this is a south american custom just as well. in every latin american country ive lived in, world cups rule over pretty much, everything. its depressing to have to go to work or school after an early morning match where you lost, seeing everybodys faces, its contagious, or when youve got everything ready to celebrate at an afternoon/late night match and you lose, and then you go out and see the few foreigners from the winning team celebrating like animals in the streets, and everyone around them just keep walking slowly, take a glance and keep going, bitching in their heads. hehe. theres also usually never class when a national match is on, or if there is, the proffesor ends up giving class to the one idiot certified chess player or something. few things better than a world cup, no words.

Oh I agree, it's just the drunk women that abuse me about supporting the other team while not even knowing how offside works that pisses me off greatly.

Or the people that yell all sorts of things at the referee for giving a clear foul to the opposition. Some people just get a bit too carried away in my opinion. A true footie fan knows when his team deserved to lose or deserves to concede a foul/penalty.

Incidently, the game I saw that day was Italy - Holland in euro 2000... a game we won but definetly did not deserve to win... I never enjoyed a victory more :D

seriously though, champions league is common knowledge by most male and, on a lesser amount, female sports fans (im not saying everyones a specialist on the subject but the european teams? theyre well known all around). but the thing is, there are really no "sports footballs fans", its something everyone usually enjoys, more than an interest its a custom in continents like south america especially. its not really a choice, you dont start liking football, because it will always be present around you, because if youre not into it, no doubt your brother, father or friend will be. even the countries in asia. i mean, its pretty much, the majority of the rest of the world except the countries in north amerika.

Without the NHL to comfort me, I felt the need to tuen to something else. NFL filled the void for a while, but it ended in January of last year. So, I renewed my love for baseball, and sought out the game of 'football' because I know internationally it's huge. It took several months for me to learn the countries that do well, and I followed international play for a couple months, until Freebasser literally introduced me to the Premier League, and I found the very thing I've been searching for. Granted, hockey's back, but I'm still very much a footie fan. I know next to nothing of the other leagues, but I enjoy the English Premier League to no end.

I personally favor Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal. My favorite players (not necessarily from the Premier league) are Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ronaldo, Van Der Sar, Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, and when he was still playing, Gabriell Batistuta. The international teams I love to watch play are Canada (obviously), England, Argentina, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, and of course, Brazil. I'm still a newbie for sure with names and the rules, but I think people in NA are really missing out on footie.

Check out Ajax for a preview on who's going to be a top player at some other team in a couple of years :)

They have the best youth system in the world and I was fortunate enough to spend a couple of days working there last week.

The serie a and the primera division (italy and spain) are usually worth watching, if not always for thrilling footie there is usually quite a bit of drama going on as a game between the number 1 and the number 20 on the ranking is a potential upset.

Unfortunetly there like one tv program on the cable I get that talks footie, and its a half hour long once a week or something like that. Packs everything into 30 minutes. Boo urns.

We go get Premier League games though, so I try to be happy with what I get. Seriously, Canada doesn't care enough about football. We have a good team but we seem to lack the fierceness of other countries. I think that's what seperates us from being in the top 30.

You know, between us Brazilians and Argentines will always have this dispute between "Who were the best : Pelé or Maradona?" The fact is that they were pleyers from different eras. Pele was the best in his time and Maradona was the best in his time. But I still consider Pelé the greatest cause he stablished records that will never be broken. Even though in the 90's Hawkes played for Wednesday and was a top player for both teams. But yeah, if the USA get beat every game then I'll be happy. Netherlands dissapoint in tournaments. Colourful though.

Yeah, if England don't win it, then the Dutch would be my 2nd team I'd like to see win it.

I'm also pretty confident that England will get seeded ahead of the USA.

The latest odds have USA at 100-1 to win it and the Netherlands at 10-1 to win it.

England are at 8-1 :p (same as Germany) but I dunno if oddchecker.com is an English site which might of shorten the odds for them.

I cannot see anyone but Brazil, Argentina, Germany, England or Netherlands winning it anyway.

I also think the USA had a pretty easy group and are artificial in their placing. Part from Mexico maybe but still no where near what they used to be, pick a good side out of these to have in a group: Costa Rica, Trinada & Tobago, Guatemala and Panama.

Hollands Group had Czech and Romania in, Finland sometimes throw up surprises to.

Maybe Englands was a little easier than the Dutch with only really Poland and Austria as tough matches. Northern Ireland (I know they lost to them but we still won the group), Wales and Azerbijdasufgisagbdson are all shit really.

They made an exception for him, he was allowed to ref for one more season even if he's above the maximum age for refs (according to the Italian FA).

When the Opel thing became a problem they allowed him to ref serie B matches only but he said something along the lines of "you either trust me or you don't" and left.

There were talks of bringing him to england to ref Premiership games. Would be interesting to say the least!

On a vaguely related note, years ago a dutch ref that had reached the maximum age took the dutch FA to court and won. I think that from that point on refs that passed the physical could ref in the highest division regardless of age. He was able to anyway :)

It's just football 'yo, that is what respective teams do to each other. And then when that team loses an excuse is made up and the pitch, ref, preperation, manager, linesman or some aspect not relating to the team is blamed!

Being from a non-footballing nation you wouldn't know this, haha :p

The US is going to get spanked and I will be happy when they lose and go home. Ranked 7th in the world? The fucking FIFA rankings are horseshit anyways.

UEFA x 1.00
CONMEBOL x 0.99
CAF x 0.96
CONCACAF x 0.94
AFC x 0.93
OFC x 0.93

That's god damn retarted. CONCACAF as .94? This is why you have shitty teams like Mexico (no offense Mexico, but you shouldn't be top ten...top twenty yes) and the USA in the top 10. It's complete bullshit. Congrats USA you beat Haiti 20 times.

have some good luck, from uruguay to australia.

OK YOUR TURN

There is an incredibly positive feeling in Australia going into these games. Traditionally, football has been the least supported code after Aussie Rules, Rugby and Rugby League; so the support from the community is quite astouding.

There are a few reasons why I think we'll get up over Uruguay. Firstly, the game has just undergone a massive restructure here with a new league and administration. The crowds at the local games are comparable to those at rugby league matches (15,000-20,000 people, Aussie rules get more people) compared to maybe an average of 2000 last year. So there is positive community support for the national team, rather than a kind of fools hope.

Secondly, the main problem with the national team has been our defence. Under Frank Farina, the defence really suffered and was the main reason we didn't qualify for the last two world cups. Guus Hiddink has really tightened it up in the few months he's been in charge. It still can be shaky, but with every game its improving.

Thirdly, the skill level has increased, particularly the passing game. We had a tendency to grind our passes out and it looked really choppy and untidy. The team has been working well together recently, with more fluid forward motions and purpose up front.

Answer: You're gonna get your assed kicked!

Win in Rugby & Football today. Always nice to beat Australia and Argentina in one day. Any other countries beginning with A wanna get their assed kick? America? :D

Who are ya?

Ha. I cannot wait to England are fully strengthed from injuries*. *I'm keeping my fingers crossed Neville and whatshisface come back for Englands Defence cus then we will be a force.

Even if England lost today (football), if they played like that they only have two teams to fear in the whole world cup. Brasil and Argentina.

If you wasn't impressed by both teams in the Geneva game today, then there is something wrong with. You cannot say England are flagging after that.
