I mean with this generation, more or less.

Good: Edward Norton. I think if he wasn't kinda dorky, he'd be considered more of an a-list actor. But his work, from Primal Fear to American History X to Fight Club to Everyone Says I Love You to Death To Smoochy to The 25th Hour shows he's got incredible range. In fact, he's probably the most versatile actor since DeNiro. But he'll never get that Affleck money, or the Tom Cruise roles, and it's not because he can't act.

Bad: Orlando Bloom. Can they stop giving this guy roles already? He was fine in the whole LOTR thing, but once he started getting to talk more, he just kinda began to show his real flaws.

Underrated: Cate Blanchett. I think she's probably one of the best female actors out there, but she tends to get overshadowed a lot. Maybe it's the roles she picks. I don't know. Either way, I think she has a lot of natural ability. She shoulda had an oscar before Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow or Halle Berry. I mean, c'mon.

Good:Edward Norton. I have to agree there (which may be a first for us). I have never saw a movie with hm in it that I even though was just OK, everything he's in is good.

Bad: Keanu Reeves. Considering he's had the same character since he was Ted Theodore Logan, just changed his haircut.

Underrated. Jason Lee. Although "I think My Name Is Earl" is going to change that.

Good: Johny depp. one of the best actors going today. amazing range...can pull the most bizarre characters out of the depths of this mind. he has NO fear when accepting the most challenging roles. he could give 2 shits about popularity....and he has decades more to go....

Bad: the Rock. dude....come on. why is he still getting roles? i mean....dude.

Underrated: jake gyllehal (sp) and Nick Stahl. they fuckin rock. everything these 2 have done has been spectacular (well, bubbleboy was....yeah...forget that). i can't wait to see which one will win the oscar first....

Yes, that's exactly my point. He gets by on looks, just the same as say Cameron Diaz (who's currently the second highest paid actress, I believe) or Jennifer Lopez.

Good: Brad Pitt - Thought he was just a pretty boy actor but proved me wrong by not taking himself so seriously as to avoid weird roles. Above all his roles in 12 monkeys and Snatch.

Bad: Quentin Tarantino - Direct, but please, stay off camera. Please?

Underrated: Steve Bushemi - Won't ever get proper roles because he's goofy looking but he's a very good actor.

I must also add Ryan Renolds to the Bad list.

I like ryan....on sitcoms. he's great for TV. But he doesn't make the transition to movie acting well. his delivery is too...animated? I guess that's the word I'm looking for.

He's got the eye candy thing going though. I guess he got all buff for that Blade movie and last night we were watching him in the Aminityville horor remake and he had alot of scences without his shirt. I was like DAMN! break me off a peice of that! his bod is amazing.

10-11-2005, 02:06 PM
Good.....Edward norton for sure, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Steve Buscemi, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce....all tops in my book.

On another level though I would have to say Jack, Al, Bobby D'Niro and Gene Hackman have set the bar pretty high.

Bad......All those pretty boys from your last thread. Oh yeah and that Diesel guy.

Underrated.....David Strathairn, but not for long...he's Edward R. Murrow in the upcoming Good Night, and Good Luck.

I agree with Depp and Jason Lee. Lee's just more of a funny guy than a serious thespian, though. And yeah, Keanu hasn't moved more than 3 muscles in his face since he started acting.

Strangely, I consider Brad Pitt more of an underrated actor. But yes, he's definitely good.

I don't know, though, Q, I mean, Walking Tall and The Rundown are admittedly stupid movies, but they can be entertaining, and The Rock kinda holds his own. I joke about being a fan of his, but he's actually not that bad. Plus, he at least has charisma going for him. Orlando Bloom can't really say the same.

Yeah, for the type of movies that he's in, he does a decent job. As of right now, he's smart enough to realize he's nothing more than an "Action Star".

And his role in Be Cool was the lone bright spot in a terrible movie.

Rock is not that bad....the roles he chooses don't allow him to do all he can. I watched him when he was still in the WWF and that fool was one of the few that made the shit great to watch. A really funny guy and watch out for the movie he is doing about the juvinelle hall kids that become a football team (forget the name) based off a true story should be a great chance for him to show off his chops...the rock is good and given the right role (much like Jim Carey and Eternal Sunset...and Bruce Almighty) will show it..WWF HASNT BEEN THE SAME SINCE HE LEFT JABRONI.

i agree with all 3 of these. i would actually say brad pitt is underrated; hear me out!

in general (IE, not any of you), girls like him because he's a pretty boy, and guys don't like him because he's a pretty boy, but hang on, he can actually act. for a guy who COULD pull an orlando bloom and get by in hollywood solely on his looks, he's an excellent actor. people always call me gay when i say i like brad pitt, but they're wrong, i swear. i could find out that he's a scientologist and i'd forgive him because he's still good in his movies.

on that note: bad - tom cruise

I agree with you and mickill, he is highly underrated in a way. I though of that while writing that. I originally had Buscemi in "good" but decided to put him in as "underrated" because he is, very. I was in doubt whether to put Pitt in "underrated" but it worked out better this way.

Good : Bill Murray. He's just the man. Always has been, but now he's really killing them.

Bad : Orlando Bloom. He was even shit in LOTR, with his poncy limp wristing posh talk.

Underated : David Schimmer. Ross was by far the funniest in friends. Bar none.

I gots another Bad. ( why is it so much easier to focus on negative rather than positive.)

Ben Affleck. I don't think anyone will argue that he sucks just a little bit.

I laughed so hard when he started to become this HUGE sex symbol. I was like, you mean the guy form the kevin smith movies, sexy? ahahahahahaha! that's too funny. I can not get behind the sex symbol thing with him. I guess that makes him overrated in the sex symbol category

Pitt has a lot of depth and can render different emotions pretty effortlessly through his eyes alone. He's excellent in 12 Monkeys. He's barely recognizable in Kalifornia. He's seriously great in almost anything he does: Fight Club, Snatch, True Romance...I mean, I haven't really seen Legends Of The Fall or A River Runs Through It, but he's probably good in those too. He should kinda stay away from doing accents, though. It's his achilles heel, so to speak.

Ben Affleck kinda ruined the end of Good Will Hunting for me. When his character Chucky is knocking at Will's door and nobody's answering. And it finally hits him that Will left. His way of trying to convey to the audience that he'd figured it out may as well have been him going, "Well how about that! Will left! I'll be darned" because his facial expressions were just kinda stupid and overemphasized.

Oh, Bill Murray. Good one

Ben went to William Shater's school of overacting. in general I find his delivery to be either too forced or too dramatic.

Philip Seymour Hoffman (he's on my mind because of Capote)

Edward Norton
Oliver Platt
Jeremy Irons

Guy Pearce
Rene Russo

Penelope Cruz
Demi Moore

I think that his performance (and that of a few of the other actors's, namely Cate Blanchett's) was the one thing about the Aviator that I really cared for. Oh, and the big crash was pretty sweet.

Yeah, DiCaprio's kinda slept on. Same with Mark Wahlberg. That guy's got skillz.

God, I never seem to watch movies anymore. I used to have tons on underrated actors on my list but they all get loads of work now.

I can never get enough Judy Davis though because even when she's in a horrid movie she's interesting.

I think Tom Cruise is underrated as much as he bugs me as a person. But I haven't seen his last few movies so that might not be accurate anymore. He used to be able to take a standard movie and make it pretty good. And I even liked Vanilla Sky.

DeNiro is overrated. I am almost always disappointed in his movies.

Okay so he's alright in that ONE movie. But saying he's a distinguished actor is like saying MC Hammer is a sick MC.

To me, he's one of these young actors who have studied old time, classic actors too much instead of making their own styles and techniques, and what comes out is a load of clichés and pouting.

Anyways, I'm not too sure who I could list for all the "good" and "bad" actors that aren't already pretty standard (we all know DeNiro is the best and that Keanu Reeves can't act) or previously talked about, so I may as well discuss some "underrated" actors...

Jeff Goldblum being one. That guy cracks me up. :D

Also, pick any character actor and they will all wind up on the underrated list. My personal picks would be Bob Balaban (http://movies.infinitecoolness.com/05/close05.jpg) (my favorite role is in "Close Encouters of the Third Kind" as the interpreter for the French scientist). He just is the man.

And Peter Coyote (http://www.motherjones.com/news/special_reports/election_96/coyote_smarmy.gif) (he was Keys, the benevolent scientist, in "E.T.") is also a hidden treasure.

And Dick Miller (http://www.cinefania.com/pics/personas/2/2354.jpg) is also criminally underrated. He was in scores of B-movies in the '50s and was put to great use in the "Gremlins" movies (the old guy who has that disdain for "foreign cars," "foreign TVs", etc.).

I know a lot of people have used Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, etc. as "underrated," but let's be real. They've been having a really good run with their character types that they've since elevated past underrated.

not only that but Pete seems to be a nice guy. When I was an event planner for the Asian Art Museum in SF, he came to one of fundraisers for a hospice type program and was a guest speaker. I was standing by the door that night when he left and he turned to me and said "hey, Good Night!" Most celebrity types don't speak to the staff you know. they just walk out with thier entourage and security.

I also worked Ed Burns and Christy turlington's wedding reception and they didnt say shit to me. (ed burns drunken sister was a real bitch though, I had the pleasure of speaking with her because she lost her fucking cell phone. so drunk she couldn't stand up straight.) -oh... shit...humm I signed a waiver that said I wouldn't discuss that wedding. oh well.

The kid from Malcolm--he does deliver humor well, very deadpan and I like that.

About Leonardo DiCaprio--I think he's talented. For a long time, I didn't like him because I blurred the line between his roles/the actor and the person he seems to be in real life. synch is right (below) when he raises Gilbert Grape; DiCaprio was wonderful in that role.

As far as this current generation of actors go, I think there's a lot of really good ones, but very few great ones. And we don't have any real icons as in previous generations. We don't have a DeNiro or a Pacino or a Brando or a Newman or a Nicholson or a Hepburn (either one) or a Meryl Streep. We have great actors left over from previous generations, but very few that are up and coming. I think that Viggo Mortensen and Denzel Washington are great. Same with Hilary Swank and Uma Thurman. They have potential, but who knows.

Holy Grail Level : Beavis and Butthhead

Good : Uma Thurman - some people don't like her, but I've liked her since her first movie Johnny Be Good (1988) w/ Anthony Michael Hall. Also in Batman & Robin as Poison Ivy, Pulp Fiction and of course Kill Bill I and II.

Pam Grier - she's just downright very cool since her Foxy Brown days and in Jackie Brown. She was also in Scream , Blacula , Scream waaay back in 1973. She always sported a sexy afro back in the 70's.

Jennifer Tilley - Bride Of Chucky
John Cusak - Better Off Dead , The Sure Thing , Say Anything , Hi-Fi
Jamie Presley - ooh la la babe!
Brad Pitt - Fight Club was the best
Annie Potts - Ghostbusters , Corvette Summer , Pretty In Pink
Jamie Gertz - The Lost Boys , Crossroads , Quicksilver

Bad : Pauly Shore - he was good once upon a long-ass time ago
Keanu Reeves
Chuck Norris
Sean Connery
Steven Seagal
Nicole Kidman
Amanda Peet
Clarissa Flockhart
Jon Bon Jovi - yeah that pussy-band frontman turned actor

Underrated : Jack Black - you gotta love this guy altogether - intense.

Jason Mewes - the fucker's got mad skillz! I think that he's even capable of "non-stoner" roles and fat-ass Kevin Smith wouldn't be shit right now without him.

Jason Lee - he's finally getting deservable props w/ Earl currently. Many people don't know that he was a pro skateboarder before his acting career. And co-founder of twin companies Stereo Skateboards and Stereo Clothing.

Jamie Foxx - the guy was fucking remarkable with his portrayal as Ray Charles.

Juliette Lewis - I like her acting AND her singing ( Juliette & The Licks ) - so fuck you guys who don't. I'm not kissing any ass for approval and I bet that she could kick even any dude's ass too.

FUCK! how could i forget.. yeah add these two to my favourites.

Good- Angela Bassett, Renee Zelwegger (if you don't think so, you didn't see Cold Mountain), Uma Thurman, Michelle Yeoh, Claire Forlani, Michelle Rodriguez (was excellent in Girl Fight but hasn't had any good roles since), Steve Buscemi, William H. Macy, Steve Zahn (very funny guy), too many too mention.
Bad- Billy Bob Thorton
Underrated- I think my Good list includes those I would mention as underrated.
Overrated- Matthew McConaughey

You can't praise Bill Murray without mentioning Harold Ramis at least once in this thread.

Bad: Jessica Alba
Underrated: Don Cheadle

I remember driving to work 1 day and I heard on the radio that there was an open casting call for that movie with Richard Gere. They wanted a 6' tall male, with brown hair, early 20s, and they were looking for an unknown. I thought I should ditch, I could have been Edward Norton.

Excellent. In a perfect world John Tuturro and Don Cheadle would have 5 Oscars each.

Avignon, I don't really think Billy Bob Thorton is a bad actor at all. He was probably more in his prime during the late 90's, but he's still very good these days. I don't know who could have pulled off his role in Bad Santa better than he did. And he's barely recognizable in films like Sling Blade and U-Turn.

I didn't mention actors like Nicholson, Hoffman, Pacino because it's sort of like when everyone puts Hendrix and Clapton on their list of top guitarists--most would agree that they're givens.

Maybe I'd add William H. Macy to my list of enjoyable/good actors.

A lot of long shots that I kinda sat back and was blown away by. It's about a guy who falls for his best friend's sister, but...they way they did the film was a bit atypical and extremely character driven. Check it out.

Harrison Ford (although he hasn't done much lately...)
Liam Neeson (big fan of his)
both Masterson brothers (Danny and Chris, both on FOX's 70 Show and Malcolm in the middle respectively)
