Laver1969

I don't know who shot what. The majority of the footage seems to be fan-shot stuff.

Regarding audio quality, judge for yourself. I ripped a 24-second mp3 sample for you and others. Download it here (http://s26.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=22DEUNI9TAP7O2FT633XH61T64).

Thanks so much for the slide show. My mac is apparently too old to download videos. Yet I can download hundreds of songs. Hmmm.

I probably shouldn't say this, but whenever I hear about video footage shot by fans, I flash back to the Bon Jovi video for Bad Medicine. That's the first time I remember seeing fan footage. So every time one of you mentions the MSG DVD, I hear "Bad, Bad, Med-i-cine" in my head. :p It's sad how my brain works.

I am confident the MSG DVD will be better than the Bon Jovi video. I'll bet that Bon Jovi had to give their fans VHS video cameras way back then.

I think it would be hard to shoot footage at MSG. I was on the side but down close to the floor. I didn't see any video cameras in my section, but I could see a lot of them on the floor. The floor was the most insane floor I saw in the past year. That included two weeks ago when a guy was thrown up from the pit and launched about 10 feet into the air. If I had been in there I would have dropped my camera and tried to protect myself.

P.S. I love when promotors send those emails telling me that based upon the past concerts I've attended, they have some new ones I might be interested in. In the past two weeks, they've alerted me that INXS, Clay Aiken, and Bon Jovi are all coming. No way is that my profile.

Honestly, its a bit sketchy this MSG dvd project. 20 fans, filming.... no professional cameras, cameras no cranes to get wide shots or moving shots... all you have is a bunch of fanatics holding a camera, and them enjoying the show, not paying attention to the filming... of course i might be completely wrong, but the idea of fans filming a dvd, and not having professionals could perhaps be a disaster.

Ho-hum. I'm not happy with the video. I don't know what I was expecting, except something better. It's comprised of one quick shot after another -- mostly stuff from the fan cams. The video mixes footage of the band performing with shots of the audience singing and dancing along.

Here's a slide show of screen caps (http://photobucket.com/albums/b219/bbmb/MSG_Brass_Monkey/?action=view&slideshow=true) from the video for those of you who couldn't find $1.99 under the cushion of your sofa to purchase the video.

Thanks for screen caps. (y)

It's true that in practice, the video quality (quality of the photography) throughout might not be the greatest in the history of concert videotaping. but hey, we have about 50 different concerts on the hub already don't we?

You've got to give them serious props I reckon, I think it's a great, unique idea to give out 50 cameras to a crowd and let them go nuts. The end result will be unlike any other concert dvd ever released really. It'd have to be the closest thing to being there apart from being there, and it's going to be a pretty raw feeling. I saw the brass monkey clip on the new iTunes video store and I have to say I was pretty impressed, checking out the crowd having fun to the tunes, it brings a smile to your face, and again what you get as the end result is something fairly unique.

However, what I reckon will happen is a final cut, which I guess Yauch will do, where he edits the pro footage interspersed with the fan footage. Then, like the Anthology I'm guessing there'll be a pretty comprehensive multi angle system and the choice to view the whole concert through the fan cams, or through the professional cams. So viewers choice I reckon. It'd be cool if they gave the option and I reckon they will.

Downloaded Brass Monkey, quite liked the video but like M said it does not capture my concert experience fully, and what is it with those 'taches...NO NEED!!!

I do wish they would release Brass Monkey as a single (with the same music MMM was dropping at the MSG concert) to coincide with Solid Gold Hits release. I thought the tunes Mike mixed in brought the song bang upto date (and please don't get me wrong, I love the original but just thinking about the younguns out there brought up on todays hiphop and who may not have heard of the Beastie Boys...gives them some relevance). (y)

dave790

Everyone is going to have a different concert experiance, or their own vision of how in this instance a Beastie boys gig effects them and what it means. They'll also have their own favourite moments, and in the case of the Brass Monkey bootleg video as M pointed out things like capturing the weave, the fuck-ups, MMM's fingers ect...all things she and undoubtedly lots of other people love.

It's pretty impossible to please everyone, or produce something which everyone will love and what'll include all the bits different people love. I can totally understand why people can be disappointed, no matter how good it is I know full well this DVD isn't going to be my perfect vision of a Beasties gig.

However (fuck me going on a bit here!) my perfect vision is made up of all my Beastie live experiances (i.e. memories, recordings, video's), and as long as I have those moments I know they'll always be there. Its crazy to expect them all in one DVD, when my beasties live vision is made up of millions of different things!

With the concert experiance thing its the same thing, theres bound to be little or big things that make up your experiance that may not be represented, but thats the same for anyone who's ever seen a live DVD of a gig they've been at. And theres the thousands of people who won't have been there anyway!

Finally I'd reserve judgement on the actual DVD itself til it's actually out. One track without any features and which has been put forward for a greatest hits bonus DVD isn't a fair representation of an entire CD. Oh and by the way Miramanee...fair enough on not being a huge fan of the camera shots with the tempo thing, but to be honest i loved this in the videos (CCIO, AOLTNYC) so I'm quite happy with this news :)

My chief complaint is with the editing. The quick shots have the same effect on me as a Tilt-a-Whirl. The video makes me dizzy. It's kind of ridiculous that the footage is cut to match the tempo at some points. The video should come with a warning to take a Dramamine before watching. :p

The video isn't bad, but it doesn't really capture my Beastie Boys concert experience. I didn't really expect it would.

I probably shouldn't talk about the MSG bootleg dvd, but it gave me what I want to see in a concert dvd. I love how when MMM is cutting it up, the camera zooms in and you see his fingerwork super-close. I love that the camera was primed to catch the Weave in its full glory. I love how when Mark has a keyboard solo, the camera is fully on him. The camera is always on the right person in the bootleg, and it captures every little thing, good and bad.

Raw to me is showing the fuck-ups, like Horovitz stopping "Brass Monkey" and making them start from the top, or Yauch wiping his nose on his jacket during "Hello Brooklyn." Dude, that's raw! I like spying Fredo coming out mid-show to take pics of the band and shooting video of himself while performing "Gratitude." That's funny stuff.

As stupid as it sounds, those little things are what make a show memorable and special to me. Unfortunately for me, those are the things that get edited out of a dvd.

I trust that the final dvd will be worthwhile, no matter the quality of the fan footage. I just hope that the band include some of the fuck-ups and keep it real. That's all I want. Oh -- and superb audio. :D

ouch. i don't think you're going to like the movie too much. but at least you'll have that boot leg that you like with the snot on my jacket!

I can narrow it down for you. It's during Horovitz's intro to "Hello Brooklyn."

But you misunderstood me, I was saying it's the stuff like snot that I like and want in the final cut.

the movie has a lot of editing and fixes in it. for several of the songs we took versions from other shows on the tour that were tighter and subed them in. so all of the footage was shot at MSG, but some of the music is from other shows on that tour. but i tried to keep the snot in wherever possible.

dave790

So, Dave, what you're saying is they could never produce something that captures what they are to you entirely, so you'll accept anything that they put out with little expectations. Did I get that right? If so, that's pretty heavy. It sounds to me like they can do no wrong to you. That's a sweet deal for them. They're lucky to have you as a fan. You're easy to please -- a sure shot.

No, that isn't what I'm saying. For me personally there are so many different things I love about the Beasties, and that translates to certain moments of certain shows at various times across their career. These all contribute to what they are to me, I just think it's a tall order to expect it all in one single DVD. But theres bound to be further things on the DVD that will contribute to it...which is why I'm confident I'll be pleased. Stretching this further I loved the Beasties pre-TT5B, and that album didn't sum up what thye are to me, but it certainly developed it further.

I hope you get some of that!

I'm not really all that difficult to please. I'm open to anything that they want to put out there, but I don't feel a need to like it all. Like I said earlier, I didn't really have any expectations with the dvd or this video release. I recognized in advance that my concert experiences have been unlike most fans and that the video/dvd would likely be geared to the general fan.

Absolutely fair enough (y)

I think it is possible to please the majority. You accomplish this by listening to your fans. I think the Beastie Boys have a good handle on this. A band doesn't thrive (or should that be "survive"?) for 24 years without knowing a little something about their fans. Why do you think Yauch checks out this board? Do you think he wants to make friends or needs recipes? Come on, we are the mice and he's the guy in the white lab coat watching us run through the maze to find the cheese. He's making note of how many of us bonk our heads on the wall and how many of us never find that cheese.

I think that if you want to see something on the dvd or the next album, you should voice exactly what it is here because someone in a lab coat might take note. I said what I wanted to see on the dvd. I hope that they will try to please me, but I won't be crushed it doesn't happen.

Again all fair points, and well said (y) Incidentally I hope you don't see this as an argument, you're earlier points intrigued me and I simply thought i'd share some thoughts :) I enjoy these thoughtful discussions!

And thats cool about voicing what you'd like, I just think they've done their own thing more than most for a long long time, with sublime results. By all means theres things I'd like to see happen, but if I had the option before they came back last year I probably wouldn't have asked for TT5B. I love that album though, so I sort of trust them to do whatever they like, and continually enjoying the various things that I enjoy.

Ok. You can be the Tilt-a-Whirl guy, and I'll be the Innertube-on-the-Lazy-River girl.

Interesting to hear some of the audio is being swapped out... on a side note, Somethings Got to Give sounded great in Vancouver. Best live version of it I've ever heard, much better than on the Root Down EP. Those are the only two live versions of it I've ever heard though.

I'm gonna hold out on the 360 for a bit, the whole deal with selling two different versions (one with a hard drive and one without) is kind of iffy plus the fact that it's more expensive than any console I've ever bought. After the price drops a couple times I'll pick it up, mainly because the last major console I didn't buy was the Saturn and it was a flop anyways. I just have to buy that shit.

I'm betting on Soul Calibur III being better anyways and I won't need a new console for that.

ouch. i don't think you're going to like the movie too much. but at least you'll have that boot leg that you like with the snot on my jacket!

I'm getting in on this a little late...but I just wanted to say I thought the Brass Monkey video was dope as hell. I was at that show and it summed up that show for me in just a couple mins. I have seen them 7 times and each show felt totally different to me. I think the vid totally gave this show justice.

I'm not really impressed with what I saw in the "Brass Monkey" video. There's one clip, though, that's funny and could have been shot by a fan. There's a guy with a funny moustache that mouths the "Come on y'all it's time to get nice" bit. I laughed at that.

The guy is the highlight of this video :D

for several of the songs we took versions from other shows on the tour that were tighter and subed them in. so all of the footage was shot at MSG, but some of the music is from other shows on that tour

That's pretty interesting

I have wondered what Jamie is up to and whether he has helped with the DVD. He had such nice, newsy entries in the tour blog. :)
