That's a pretty horrifying situation. I feel really sorry for medical staff being put in that position. It's the extreme end of what someone signs on for as a medical practicioner, certainly, but it sounds like some stuff went on more for some staff members' comfort than the patients' welfare.

apparantly, the State of Louisiana is doing autopsies on all that died in a New Orleans hospital or nursing home during the week that Katrina left doctors and patients stranded, so we will certainly know whether any "mercy killings" went down...

It's such a tricky situation. I've been told that, during disasters, staffs like this are actually trained to do a sort of triage and separate the hopeless, even while still living. So if there were unanimous approval, I guess I could understand how it would be decided to perform euthanasia.

My problem with it is that there were staff members who didn't approve, including doctors on duty; so some other staff members possibly just wrested authority from people in authority who wanted to continue caring for living patients. If so: very, very not cool.
