Never Let me down is quite sick.
Jigga's verses are off the hard.
I was gonna post a few lines but I'll just give you all that good shit:
Yo, yo first i snatched the street then i snatched the charts,
First had they ear now i hav they're heart,
Rappers came and went,
I've been hear from the start,
Seen them put it together
Watch them take it apart,
See the Rovers roll up wit ribbons
I've seen them re-poed, re-sold and re-driven
So when i reload, he holds #1 position
When u hot i'm hot
And when your feet cold, mines is sizzelin
It's plain to see
Nigga's can't f*** wit me
Cuz ima be that nigga fo life
This is not an image
This is God given
This is hard liven
Mixed wit crystall sippin
It's the most consistent
Hov
Give you the most hits you can fit inside a whole disc and
Nigga I'm home on these charts, y'all niggaz visitin
It's Hov tradition, Jeff Gordan of rap
I'm back to claim pole position, holla at ya boy
AND THE SECOND VERSE:
Who else you know been hot this long,
(Oh Ya, you know we ain't finished)
Started from nothing but he got this strong,
(The ROC is in the building)
Built the ROC from a pebble, pedalled rock before I met you,
Pedalled bikes, got my nephews pedal bikes because they special,
Let you tell that man I'm falling,
Well somebody must've caught him,
Cause every fourth quarter, I like to Mike Jordan 'em,
Number one albums, what I got like four of dem,
More of dem on the way,
The Eight Wonder on the way,
Clear the way, I'm here to stay,
Y'all can save the chitter chat, this and that, this and Jay,
Dissin' Jay 'ill get you mased,
When I start spitting them lyrics, niggas get very religious,
Six Hail Maries, please Father forgive us,
Young, the Archbishop, the Pope John Paul of y'all niggas,
The way y'all all follow Jigga,Hov's a living legend and I tell you why,
Everybody wanna be Hov and Hov still alive.
Also, Common's verse on Get 'em High is very good.

I like this thread and the choices in it are straight.
Made You Look is a great hip hop song.
I also enjoy Bridging the Gap but I give the nod to MYL.
You have to give props to 99 problems.
However, in terms of just Kanye, I hate when people sleep on, IMO, his greatest work.
Just because it got a lot of acclaim and airplay people don't talk about Through The Wire.
IMO, that's one of the truest hip hop tracks ever recorded.

Girl's Girls Girls if not only for the sheer story tellin but also the features of gettin Qtip, Biz Markie and Slick Rick on there as well
but Murs fet Dangermouse:To A Black Boy to me symoblizes the best hip-hop song of the past sereval years
Dear Marcus, I know its been hard times/
Since they made you the victim of your so called crime/
Kind of snacthed you out the game of life in your prime/
They already took one we wont let them take nine/
Since birth it seems the deck was stacked against you to fail/
With your father not there, moms in and out of jail/
But you saw through it all and you chose to excel/
I cant see why they choose to lock you in a cell/
Well Im praying that your free by the time you get this/
Never known a convict with a 3.96/
Gpa but in Rome, Ga/
black boys having sex with white girls no way/
In most any other state it would've been ok/
For two high school teens to have sexual relations/
But at age 15, thats molestation/
In the great state of Georgia/
And I really feel for ya/
She was only 3 months away from being 16/
You a few months away from acheiving your dreams/
All American, played on the football team/
Accepetd into Vanderbelt a scholar in the making/
And the jury saw fit to acquit you of the raping/
After only 15 minutes of deliberation/
Whats the state of our nation when the laws aint in check/
Got you serving ten years for conseunal sex?/
I'm preplex and ashame at the games that they plan/
Trying keep a young man from his life and education/
Not to mention the family you been with since age 10/
Regardless of your race they loved you and took you in/
So let your struggle make you great dont let it make you hate/
No we wont stop working till your free from them gates/
Much love and respect hold your head god bless/
From the bottom of my heart M U R S/

You don't have to be on Jay Z's cock and balls to have an opinion.
Most of what Jay does is so good because it's Jay that does it.
I love 9th edition, short album. Murs is a little preachy sometimes, but he balances that shit out on H.U.S.T.L.E and Walk like a Man.
The Corner is the best song on meh album.
I'm still all over No Said Date and Madvilliany.

Lemme get this straight:
"Jay-Zs not that good of an MC."
So, your saying he's mediocre? Average? Subpar? Below the status quo for good MCs?
I think at the very worst, even retards would say he's a good MC. Possibly a very good MC.
People who have a clue say he's a great MC.
Those who have actually taken the time to really listen know that he's the greatest MC, in EVERY sense of the word, that's ever lived.

Jay is one of the 5 best rappers ever. That's just a fact. It's nothing to do with opinions. The earth is round, wood comes fom trees and Jay Z is top 5. You either understand and acknowledge it or you're just an individual trying too hard to form an unpopular opinion. Or worse, you don't know what a good rapper is. He doesn't have to be your favorite. You don't even have to like him. But you should recognize his talent. This is just Mike Jordan syndrome. The stats speak for themselves.

I put Jay-Z and Nas in the same rankings. They have a lot in common and a few differences. They both had classic debut albums, then just a bunch of so-so albums with hot songs on them.
Jay had a better track record and more album sales, and the better business sense. He also had Timberland, Swizz Beatz, and Kanye knocking incredible beats out for him.
Nas really wasnt doing it for me untill he hooked up with Salaam Remi. I started to listen to him again when I heard "Made You Look" and "I Can".
Nas writes. Jay doesnt.
Nas was noticed for his lyrics and style.
I believe Jay only really blew up after Biggie's death. He kinda filled his void.
Anyhoo, like I said they both had classic debuts, but I favor 'Illmatic'.
Are they either considered the "G.O.A.T" ? I think we have a long ways before we strt thinking about that title...

KRS' name doesn't even belong in the same discussion as Rakim's. Anyway, I don't even know what point you all are trying to make, but Ra is perhaps the most significant rapper of all time. He's the blueprint for every post '86 emcee ever. People would still be rapping like Kurtis Blow if he never came along.
By the way, have you ever heard a good KRS freestyle? Granted, neither Rakim or Jay can freestyle either, not off the head anyway (incidentally, Nas is pretty nice off the head). But KRS freestyles aren't exactly mindblowing. His flow in general is loud and sloppy. He has zero grace. His words barely rhyme, save for maybe a syllable here and there. He rhymes words like "industry" with "hypocrisy". He's put out classics, but he's not the end all greatest rapper bar none or anything. Dude's cool, but if you want to talk about overrated rappers, he's the fucking poster child for the term.

Let me help you. He dropped 'The 18th Letter' and 'The Master' which no-one bothered to buy. He signed to Aftermath. Dre slept on him, because he realized he's a has-been. He was on a Truth Hurts record. Then Dre dropped him off of Amtermath.

Either way, he's ten times sicker than KRS, and both his solos are better than any of the 50 or so garbage LPs that KRS has dropped in the last 8 years.

KRS>Rakim as far as lyrical content goes

KRS has more edge lyrically and an authoritative voice, but he raps kind of sloppy, and he's one ugly dude.
Rakim has been the prototype on "how-to-flow" for 20 years, but he's not very versatile.
Apples and oranges, folks.

I've read this from you on a few occasions. I know Reasonable Doubt is classic. But saying Blueprint and Black Album are only so-so confuses me.
I guess it's kind of like the people who say LTI is the beastie best album. It's a matter of opinion I guess but I definite like Jay later in his career.

The reason I prefer 'Reasonable Doubt' is because it's the least "pop rap" album that Jay made. It seemed more hip-hop and less jiggy. His lyrics are more on point. He had producers like Clark Kent, & DJ Premier. It just seemed more underground.

Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Jay-Z all deserve the kudos that they receive and Nas had just as much chance to work with the mainstream producers as Jigga, only it back fired given his whole rebel against the mainstream era people forget that he worked also with Timbaland,Kanye West,Dr. Dre,Trackmasters as well as guest stars such as Puff Daddy, Aaliyah, Scarface,Ginuwine,Mobb Deep,Ron Isely and DMX...and thats just 3 cds (the firm(underated),I am and the infamous Nastradamus) before Stillmatic were he basically said fuck trying to go mainstream...it just didnt work for him like it did for Jigga mainly because Nas set himself up for failure for the route he went with Illmatic and then wanting to become mainstream after such an outside the box smash.

If thats the case it's a damn shame, still to this day, that people would say that 2pac aka Makaveli isn't that great of an MC(if not the greatest). The same people that hate on him, with ridicolous arguments, hate on Jigga the same way....Biggie though seems to be spared....only on the account he didnt have a chance to wear out his welcome with only 2 (or 3 counting the double) cds during his lifetime. But this debate is going off on a tanget I thought it was about the best rap song in the past years or so?

both Rakim and Krs are 2 of the most important and influencial rappers in the history of hip-hop..
to compare them and project a "winner" would get quite tedious and subject to purely opinion...
both had distinct voices and flows....rakim's was smoother, Krs had more styles .
rakim didn't/couldn't freestyle....Krs was a master of it, he was the epitome of freestyling. If you can't see/understand/accept that (yes, mike, i'm looking at you), you're not the hiphop head you may think you are.
Krs may not be the best freestyler of all time....but he forced MC's to keep that relevant in hop hop, to check their skills....that, alone, deserves your respect.
Rakim's flow changed hiphop, he's probably the most copied ever.....ever. changing up your flow and speed mid-song, mid-verse...was unheard of before him. now it's common place.
rakim hasn't put out a relavant album since....well, since his "juice days"....
Krs hasn't since I Got Next....Sneak Attack had a few decent tracks on it, and some good lyrics (get yourself up, and Hot) but the production was garbage.
i honestly have barely listened to anything he's done since then.
i still love his flow, though.
----------
jaz z is a sick rapper. sick. he does shit with his flow and lyrics that NO ONE has done....EVER. he is the next generation of the Rakim/Krs1's...

I appreciate KRS. I just don't think he's on the level of other "golden age" emcees like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick or Kool G Rap, in terms of pure rhyming abillity. You're right when you say that his strengths lie with his styles. He's witty, he's got charisma and probably no other rapper from the era, save for maybe LL Cool J, sounded as confident on the mic. But he's also kinda sloppy and his voice is kinda eh. He's not the total package or anything. Like I said though, I like dude. I grew up on his music. But he's just not the best in my opinion. I'd equate him to a Run DMC or Chuck D. There's substance and style. But pure lyrical skill, no. He's been a little more consistent and influential than maybe Slick Rick and G Rap, but on the whole, he's far from the best rapper, in my opinion.
A side note: I don't know why people keep referring to his freestyling ability like it's something incredible. Half of what he "freestyles" is shit he repeats in other places. People talk about his big triumph over Melle Mel at Latin Quarter like he kicked that off the head, too. That somehow sparked this whole notion that he was a sick freestyler. I mean, when he does go off the head for real, it's alright, but it's not like it's incredibly ill. I'll give him this, though, he rocks crowds better than anybody else. Is that fair?
