Have you ever read any David Rakoff? He just writes comedy essays, nothing brain-busting unless you count his unruly sentence structure and semi-invented vocabulary. I mean he's no Lewis Carroll or anything but he does do that thing where you take a noun or a proper noun and give it the suffix of ...esque or ...ian. And sometimes he'll make a reference to something like Edvard Munch lithographs...

You talkin' to me? etc.

Nope. A friend handed me one of Sedaris' books, and I read about 2/3rds of it and just put it down. It reminded me too much of angry, vengeance queens I used to work with. Well-done, as far as that stuff goes, but too ugly for my taste.

Was it Barrel Fever? Some of his stuff is extremely childishly indulgent in that way I will agree, and I don't enjoy those as much. If all of his essays were like that one where a group of men kill his family then gang bang him, or that one where he is a celebrity who loves too much and broke Mike Tyson's heart, I wouldn't enjoy him. But The SantaLand Diaries are fantastic!!

"You're going to have me fired? I'm going to have you killed!"

Or the story about his younger brother, The Rooster. "Just say 'fuck it' and eat yourself some motherfucking candy."

nothing against it at all....

i just tend to be more interested in understanding the world around...making sense of it all...
it makes me feel more confident....
so i tend to read lots of science and history, politics...

Well, I can understand that more direct approach to learning about the world, but I also think you can learn from everything you do. So, there's what I have to say about it.
