View Full Version : one hit wonders
i'm making another mix cd, this one is one hit wonders from the 90's late 80's and possible the 00's. basically the goal is to create a party cd full of songs where college kids can go "haha, i remember that song, that song reminds me of when i was younger, let's have sex" or something along those lines. here's what i've got so far.
ricky martin - livin' la vida loca
harvey danger - flagpole sitta
marcy playground - sex and candy
maybe something by everclear, or limp bizkit (not techinically a ONE hit wonder, but honestly, they may as well have been) or something like that. i'm talking like MTV one hit wonders, shit you saw at the #5 spot on TRL for a week and then never saw again. i'm not looking for good songs, i'm looking for songs that remind us (us being 18-22 year olds) of when we were young(er) and stupid(er).
it's more of a gimmick mix, it's meant for laughs...fire away

I am the king of 90s one hit wonders
*White Town - Your Woman* <--- This one is essential
Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
Spin Doctors - Two Princes
OMC - How bizarre
Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at tiffanies
Presidents of the USA - Their entire self titled album (I mean they are still going but that was really just the most awesome 90s album)
Savage Garden - I want you
Proclaimers - I would walk 500 miles
Hanson - Mmm Bop
Rednex - Cotton-Eyed Joe
House of Pain - Jump Around
Los Del Rios - Macarena
Lou Bega - Mambo Number 5
Eifel 65 - Blue
Verve - Bittersweet Symphony (even though they have other good songs this was their only big hit)
I have others but thats the best ones I can think of for now. The rest are generally pretty crap but yeah. Ohh for 80s one hit wonders The Knack's - My sharona is king.
DroppinScience
10-15-2005, 12:53 AM
Hmmm...
Lou Bega - "Mambo No. 5"
That godawful "Macarena" song
Sugar Ray - "Fly" (well, they had more hits, but they're not far off from one hit wonder status)
Smashmouth - "Allstar" (same deal as Sugar Ray, but I think you get the idea)
t.A.T.u. - "All The Things She Said" (they won't have a second hit, right?)
Blur - "Song 2" (I hesitate to list this one, since they're huge in Britain and are an all-out awesome band, but I suspect your fellow American college brethren will only know Blur by this song)
B-52's - "Loveshack" (ok, they're not a one hit wonder, but this song would no doubt elicit the emotions you're going for)
Everclear isn't a one-hit wonder band in my mind, but since you asked, go with "Santa Monica" I suppose. With Limp Bizkit, do "Break Stuff."
And these are fairly obvious, but you can't go wrong with MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This," Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby," C+C Music Factory's "Everybody Dance Now," Marky Mark's "Good Vibrations," Haddaway's "What Is Love" (from
Nite at the Roxbury), etc.
Oh yeah, you could also do Dee-Lite's "Groove Is In The House."
Sounds like you got a full list now. :p

Oh, and Bob, I thought of some more...
You can't go wrong with that "Closing Time" song by Semisonic.
"The Way" by Fastball
"Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind
"I Like Big Butts" by Sir-Mix-a-Lot
Lemme know how this party goes down, Bob.

Yes, but is anything else they did after that album a hit? Nah.
Another song on your compilation should be...
"The Impression That I Get" - The Mighty Mighty Bosstones (to the mainstream they're a one-hit wonder, but they've had YEARS of being awesome within the ska/punk circle, nevertheless, this song fits your requirements, no doubt)
well, i haven't exactly got a party planned yet, i figured i'd work on the music first and then let everything else fall into place after that
but i'll keep you updated

well I moved to England in the late 90's, so maybe they just weren't songs that made it over here.
I would add also that you can't really count GooGoo Dolls as 'one hit wonders', as that song Iris they did was their breakthrough hit really.

Well, as you can see, the "one-hit wonder" definition is being stretched somewhat, but Goo Goo Dolls would certainly be of the "we know this band only from an x amount of songs and now they've dropped off the face of the earth" variety.

I'd like to echo the prasie of White Town.
Also does that Everlast tune count? What It's Like.
I think theres 2 types of one hit wonder by the way, those that are the odd mainstream tune from quality bands who have decent and consistent careers, and those from one's who don't :)
An example of the better one could be Sublime (hit - 'What I Got') or At the Drive In (hit - 'One Armed Scissor').
oh, another one hit wonder is Babylon Zoos Spaceman.

Jes, cosmo, you didn't read the disclaimers. I am quite aware that both bands have had a series of hit singles.
But they fit the emotions that Bob is looking for on his mix tape. And the definitions of "one hit wonder" were already stretched from the get go on this thread. And it's not as if we're all waiting in anticipation for what Sugar Ray or Smashmouth are going to record next, so they may as well be one-hit wonders.

Blur?
In the United States of America (where Bob is residing), they're a one-hit wonder (you can be a "one-hit wonder" in one country and a full-fledged institution in another... it does happen). All the songs I've listed is for the sake of Bob having some good ideas for this mixtape.
I know full-well about the status of Blur (or, for that matter, Sugar Ray or Smashmouth) and don't talk to me as if I don't know otherwise, especially considering that I wrote that I did.
To reiterate, these are songs only for Bob's consideration. If his criteria was more rigid, I wouldn't have cited bands who've made more successes. I don't think his party is going to consist of people consulting their "Billboard Top 100" books and saying: "Bob, it says here that [artist's name] had another chart hit. Not quite a one-hit wonder." Why do I know this? He hasn't invited you guys to the party. :p
Any number of these songs will elicit the nostalgic emotions Bob is aiming for, and that's all that matters.
And if Bob wasn't living in America, I wouldn't have mentioned Blur. It's as simple as that. Got it?
And while we're at it... Bob, you may as well add Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart" to your list. That should be good for a few laughs!

Blur has probably only had one massive hit outside of Europe.
I mean boys and girls, coffee and tv, beetlebum, she's so high, parklife, country house all made it into the charts over here, but they had nowhere near the success of Song 2...commercially at least. Yet you are more likely to hear boys and girls or coffee and tv (especially at breakfast time) on the radio than song 2.

Good luck, Bob. May all the hotties suddenly get the urge to make out with you once Crazy Town plays. ;)
i uh, think we may have skipped crazy town, sorry. although we are DEFINITELY going to make a volume II, because this one was such an amazing success and there were so many songs we had to leave out. seriously, it went so much better than i could have ever hoped. it's like, every single song, at least 2 people laughed and smiled and said "haha, i remember this song, awesome", and we all sang along drunkenly and reminiscently. love shack was a huge hit, the whole shack did indeed shimmy.
and for extra "haha, i remember that points", it helped that i was wearing this (http://www.bustedtees.com/shirts/dysentery). that shirt's always a big success when i wear it.
the party itself went really well. i played the most amazing game of beer pong in my LIFE, we practically cleared the table before they got a chance to shoot. everyone got very nicely drunk, myself included, i didn't get sick or get a hangover or anything, everything was really perfect. except for the part where i didn't get laid but that's not unusual, so i won't complain. i was as charming as i know how to be, so i'm happy with how that went. the mix was a giant smashing success, we're doing it again sometime.

"Ca plane por moi" is from Leila K.
Ahem...
Roger Jouret was a drummer in a Belgian punk act before striking out on his own under the pseudonym Plastic Bertrand. When he did so he infused into his music a bit of French, English, punk, surf rock, and his own sense of humor, and the result was one of the best known pop songs ever to come out of Belgium.
"Ça Plane Pour Moi," which roughly translates to 'it's going well for me,' more or less conforms to the formula of standard punks tracks, with a simple chord progression that would make the Ramones proud. But the lyrics are downright silly, from the ludicrous snippets of English to the anachronistic, Beach-Boyesque wailing. Still, it works - or, at least, it worked once, as Plastic Bertrand remained a one-hit-wonder.
Leila K's is a cover version, recorded some 10 years after the original.
and "Der Kommissar" is from Falco!
Ahem...
After The Fire were formed in the UK in 1972 by keyboard player Peter Banks, Andy Piercy (guitar, bass), Ivor Twidell (drums) and John Russell (guitar). The market was responsive to UK adult-orientated rock during the early 70s but the band's mixture of "pomp Christian pop" was slow to break through. They eventually secured a contract following the release of their debut album on their own label. CBS Records invested in them and they were rewarded with a UK Top 40 hit, "One Rule For You", in 1979. The accompanying album, although polished, sold only to the converted. The band's subsequent recordings were minor hits until the unexpected major success of "Der Kommissar". Originally recorded by Falco in his native Germany, After The Fire's version went on to sell over a million copies worldwide, and made the US Top 5.
As a US teenager, I would not have known the one by Falco, who only became known in the US years later, with Rock me Amadeus. His recording of Der Kommissar was never released as an airplay single in the US. So, the titular 'one hit' to which I would have been (correctly) referring to is the After the Fire version.
I guess I'm older...

btw quotes above are from 80smusiclyrics.com. It's amazing what you can find out with a little research.
