right, techy question here.
I thought i was running a programme which would by pass my laptops dvd region encoding, Turns out the programme wasn't doing its job. And now my laptop had locked its self to region 1 and i cant get i back to region 2.
Does anyone know how i can get it back!?
i want to change mine as well. but i read that you have to do alot of re-installing and stuff.

well, it told me in no uncertain terms "you cannot change this, even if you reinstall windows" :(
but then dvd decrypter pointed me towards a firmware site, but it warned me "only for advanced users, reflashing incorectly might fuck up your shit for good" and i am not an advanced user....balls! if this is permanently fucked i will be pissed.
yeah well my dvd player (the one for the tv) is broken, the PS2 doesn't play certain dvds (like some of my metallica ones) and then i locked the settings on the computer for dvds i can watch on the PS2 - so now them metallica dvds are gathering dust. (n)

I had a spare dvd drive for my pc on which I wanted to test the whole region-free thing.
You get a number of times that you can chose which region you want the drive to be set to. I believe it was four at that time. I found some firmware that was specifically for my drive and was supposed to make it region free. I flashed my dvd player with it, rebooted my pc, checked the drive properties and it was set to region 2 with just one try left :o
It might have worked properly... but I don't even have a region 1 dvd to check it with :D

Find a region 0 (all regions) firmware and install it. Firmwares are just like "patches" for hardware. A corrupt installation can render the device inactive, but just make sure no-one pulls the plug halfway through the flashing, and it should be fine. It is only if the flash is interupted halfway through you are fucked.

I'd stay away from dodgy looking sites too...
No, wait, you can still log on here though.

dvd drives aren't that expensive either, having moved to france from the us, I just bought a second internal dvd drive for playing the DVDs I brought with me - plus made it was a combo CD burner so I can burn cd's.
that's an option if you have the space and a little dough and don't want to mess with firmwares, but like Ace said, it's not a super danger to flash the firmware - worst case if it gets screwed up, you'll have to deal out for another drive, though that's very unlikely
my dvd drive is the only cd drive in the tower and burner too.
i ain't gonna risk shit.
