I love the boss! Still. I'm enjoying he new stuff as much, if not more than his classics.
I consider him one of the great American song writers. I'd put him right up ther with Dylan who obviously influenced him greatly. I think when you talk about folk-rock, that Springsteen is one of the pioneers of that genere.
Born in the U.S.A. is one of the only songs that makes me feel partiotic(it's not an easy task). Kinda of ironic for a song that was written as a war protest. fuck our National Anthem. Born in the U.S.A. is a much more realistic portrayal of our country. If you're gonna celebrate our country for what it is, celebrate that song.

yeah, it sounds dope to me.
(however, I'm very bad at purchasing cd's, espcially the pricier 3 disc set type of deals for myself. so ah...xmas list.)

I just checked and noticed that I've only heard (that I'm sure of) 5 songs that he made after 1984.

I don't need a third version of Born to Run.
The concert DVD part of this intrigues me though. I didn't get to see him until 1980. :p

Just so you know, it probably won't be long before that chump cosmo comes along to bash this thread and it's contents, so enjoy it while it's still untainted.
As for the reissue, I don't really understand why Born To Run gets so much more praise than some of his other equally, if not more superior work. I tend to enjoy Darkness On The Edge Of Town a bit more. It's a little more restrained, but just as well-written. And Nebraska is just amazing, for what's really just basically a slightly polished "demo". I like Born To Run, it's a good album, but it's sort of his Sgt Pepper. Born In The USA is better too. But Born To Run does have Thunder Road. That works to its advantage, I suppose.

I agree with what Mickill said except for the part about Born in the USA being better. That record blew, as did the resulting tour. Textbook example of why you shouldn't have a dozen producers.
This is my 10th excuse to bring up that I was there when Courtney Cox danced with Bruce. :o

I was trying too hard to drive my own point home. I went too far with the Born In The USA thing, but I do like the album. Truth is, I hardly listen to either "Born" album, comparatively speaking, of course. I like his less bombastic stuff I guess.

P.S. My mom's letter to the editor was published in a major magazine when she made fun of all the coverage of Bruce back when Born to Run came out. It was one of her proudest moments.

i would never bash the Boss. i grew up on Thunder Road. he's my mom's one true love. the only man she'd leave her boyfriend for. can't say i blame her, either.
i just make fun of mickill's homoerotic love for Bruce. nothing wrong with that.

That whole grande wall of sound of "Backstreets" opened up just a bit would be nice. The piano intro and ensuing agony,
And after all this time to find we're just like all the rest
Stranded in the park and forced to confess
That song has texture to spare. The whole Album is amazing.
Bruce is a maniac about sound.
Can't wait.

Born In The USA is better too.
I was pretty empathetic until you wrote this and lost all credibility.
Born to Run is probably his third best record, but that means it's, like, an A or A-. Excellent stuff.
I've been drooling over this set for a while. I've had crappy old bootlegs of his stuff before, but not much pre-'78.
Born in the USA is like his Document. It's an okay record that landed at the right time at is waaaaaaaayyy over-beloved. It's got about five great songs on it and some real filler ("Darlington County," "Bobby Jean").

We get to list. Cool.
5. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
4. Born To Run
3. The River
2. Nebraska
1. Darkness On The Edge Of Town....or Born In the USA. Can't decide. Ok, this isn't funny anymore.
Nebraska tends to float up near the top because of Atlantic City, really. I think it's perhaps my favorite thing he ever recorded. The River probably has a bit more to it, though.

i cant think of a song i dont like of his. i thought that the rising tour was absolutely amazing! which reminds me...
ok one of the nights (rising tour) he came to calgary, alberta. i was there with my family and some friends. my older brothers and their friends got tickets in the pit. they were jumpin and what not so much that some dude, near then end of the performance, told them that if they wanted to meet bruce and talk to him after the concert they couild. soo... after they went somewhere to talk to him and they mentioned that they would be in edmonton (alberta) tomorrow night. so bruce said he would like to dedicate a song to them for tomorrows show. sure enough the next night, the next city over, he played a solo on piano, for them. can't remember the song but still pretty frikin amazing!
i do realize this isnt "born to run" related but its still boss!

I was behind the stage for The Rising tour, but I was only about 10 rows back and I looked at Bruce's ass for 3-4 hours. (y)
P.S. It's been a few months since I mentioned that on 2/2/05 the Beasties played the song I requested on the shout outs. :p They're pretty cool too.

That CD sounds a bit crap, though. It's all blunted.
The best version I've had so far was a Mobile Fidelity LP. I'm really hoping this new remaster finally pops all that sound loose.
So much of the stuff... it would be impossible to remix, anyway; they'd mix it onto 16 tracks (I think it was 16) and dub it all down to two, leaving 14 open; fill up 12, dub that down to tracks three and four, etc. Like Landau once said, "It is what it is."

Born in the USA is great.
However, I can't let you say fuck our national anthem.
I still get misty eyed when I hear it and think of the context it was written in. I also think of those that made sacrifices for our freedom, like my grandfather.
Fuck the gubment, no doubt, but don't fuck the anthem. It's about us, not them.

Yeah the sound quality on that live show is amazing, if your listening to it in the 5.1 ratio, highlights of the show are many, but I sure like the way he wins over the audience....he appears almost wounded at the beginning, but by mid-show Bruce has miraculously overcome any obstacle to ripping apart the night!
That live version of "For You" say's it all, it doesn't even matter that the lyrics are barely audible....it's just the emotion, vibe and underlying power that propels the song....amazing talent.

Finally got it.
HOLY CRAP THIS SET'S GOOD
I got it, after the discount coupons, etc., for just under thirdy including tax.
Let's face it: the documentary alone is worth.... a rental. Okay; it's really good, and there are laugh-out-loud moments and nice revelations and alterate versions and the gang in the studio actually recording the album. Really good stuff. B+.
I'm only partway through the London concert, and it's fine, fine stuff. Very, very very good. What a band of ruffians. So far: B+.
The disc itself... the music itself... it's only one of the greatest albums so far. Genuine magic on vinyl. In fact, the documentary is sort of like if the album itself were annotated or something and just does a good job of... it's just terrific.
This set is probably the only thing out there that beats the Howlin' Wolf/Rocking chair album twofer CD as greatest value on the market.
God bless you, Bruce.
One small caveat: the actual CD should've been in a jewel case. The slipcases are better than the usual ones, but we still need a jewel case for traveling purposes.
Still: A.

...I'm trying to imagine the position most of those people were in, since the Born to Run songs still hadn't been on the radio at that point.
the version of "Born to Run" in that concert just kills, man. Wow.
Usually, people are impatient when going to a concert and hearing songs they haven't heard before. I can't imagine anyone hearing that version of "Born to Run," knowing the album's coming out, and not thinking, "Holy crap! -- we know there's at least one great song!"
That version of Lost in the Flood was impressive, too. Made me think of Led Zepplin covering it or something, which made me wish there were tapes around from Springsteen's Steel Mill days (his heavy metal band).

NPR has podcasts available (through itunes and their own website). On the November 16 "NPR: Music" show, the first 40 minutes is an interview with Bruce. It's a pretty good one, focusing on his early songwriting because of this special release.
(I caught up on old podcasts on my recent car trip.)
