I'm going to New york for four days next month and I want to make the most of them. Jenn already has time set aside for shopping, but I want people's opinions on what is worth seeing and what isn't.
All suggestions gratefully received (except the stupid ones of course)
The shopping in Soho is my favorite. Bar hopping at the darker more "local" bars is my favorite and talking with the locals and bartender and I only go to bars that serve Stella on tap. I enjoyed the museums. If you can, go online to find the "old" city, which is the Village (before the grid system came into play). There are cool walking tours and history information that shows you random alleys (not scary ones!) and buildings with all kinds of history from the turn of the century and before. Getting cocktails at The Rainbow Room at night is cool and the view is to die for. I'd recommend that over going to the top of the Empire State Building because the view is better AND you get the experience of the piano player and cocktails with it.

Have you been before? Are you staying in Manhattan? What kinds of things do you like to do when you travel to big cities?
Oh yeah, The Lion King is overrated.

I'm staying at the hotel QT, it's just off Times Square. We want to see a movie while we're there (Jenn loves US cinemas for some reason). Never been to New York before, but I don't want to spend my whole time there waiting in lines with other tourists to look at all the touristy things.
This is going to sound pretty sad, but one of the things I'm most excited about is the variety of places to eat there.

That is NOT sad! That's one of the best things about Manhattan! Try to eat at a hole-in-the-wall deli with mean waitresses rather than one with valuable real estate.
Get the Flashmaps book for Manhattan -- it's the best map book ever. There are loads of little maps -- one for shopping, one for museums, one of landmarks, one for the subway, etc.
Think about taking the grey line bus tour of the city if it's not too cold. I took it in February once and was huddled on top the double decker bus, but it's the fastest way to get a good overview of the island on your first visit. If your guide isn't great, get off and get back on another one. That's the only tourist thing I recommend.
There are a lot of cool, small museums that you can do in a hour or so if one matches your interest. There is a photography museum a block from Times Square for instance. If you like art museums, my favorite museum is the Frick because there is no museum where you can see so much great old art in such a small place.

...on one of my stays in New York, we were at an after-hours bar and I saw a really loudmouthed dawrf get literally thrown out of the bar by the bouncer. Surreal.

haha
i have seen a gay guy at a bar in Hell's Kitchen who carried a fairy wand around with him and wore a tutu... gotta love the locals...
in the first bar i went into in NYC with my now-bbmb-boyfriend (at the time meeting him for the first time), we sat down after ordering our beers and the first song that came on the jukebox that we had NOTHING to do with was 'No Sleep Til' Brooklyn'
