If you saw someone in trouble would you risk your life to save them?
Would it make a difference if you knew the person or would you be inclined to help even if they were a complete stranger?
* I was thinking about this case in San Fran where that mother threw her three children in to the bay. Apparently someone saw her do it and reported it, that's how they've been able to arrest her. I was just thinking if I had been there and saw someone throwin thier babies in the water like that, I probably would have called 911 and said "come quick cause I'm goin in after em!" I'm not sure I could have got to the one and two year old in time, they'd probably sink like bricks, but the 6 yr old might have treaded water long enough for someone to save him. Anyway, I like to think that if I had witnessed this act that I would have tried to do more than just call the authorties. those poor babies! :(
so that brings me to my final question: evauate your ability to react in a situation where you are put on the spot and in danger. How big is the descrepency between what you would really do and what you would like to do?

I saved a little girl from drowning. I didn't even think about it. It just happened.
I don't think people will realize they can or are a hero until after an event. Did they freeze? Did they react? etc.

I wouldn't risk too much of my life. Like if I knew they was a chance of getting killed by doing something. But other than that, I'm a big bloke with a heart of gold so I'll help anyone.
The other night on our street I heard a girls voice "get off me" and a mans voice "give me your purse". I was in bed already and I couldn't see outside cus there are loads of trees around and it was dark. So I ran outside - this is not life threatening I thought but I wouldn't want anything awful happening where I am there to help so I ran out half naked and saw two people pissed up, she couldn't walk, he was trying to keep her up straight while trying to stop her falling over her purse. I asked her if she was alright, he answered 'yes, she just drunk too much' I told him I was asking her not him and she nearly fell over. So I laughed and went back in. Piss heads!
Anyway, I would doubt anyone wouldn't help out another human being in a situation like that if you figured the worse like me. But would I jump in front of a bullet that wasn't m friend or family, I doubt it! So no, I'm not a hero

apparently she is mentally ill and probably shouldn't have had custody of the kids anyway. They found one of children's bodies on wednesday, which is when i was first introduced to the story.
it's really terrible. I just can't imagine being a child, where your mother is your whole world, and the last thing you ever know is her forsaking you by drowning you in the bay. it's horrific.

It's like Echewta said, I don't think you know until it happens. I mean if you are a firefighter or something, you are trained to react, but for most laypeople, you just don't know what you will do until faced with a situation. I think that was pretty clear in London this summer in the tube bombings - some people froze, some people fled, and some people did amazingly brave things that they probably never even knew they were capable of. Life throws things your way sometimes, and you maybe make a great catch, or maybe you don't, who knows?

I saved my sister's life once, no jokes. She was drowning in the ocean when we were younger and I grabbed her and saved her.

this one time a little girl and her sister were walking across the street from me and the smaller one tripped because she was carring a big gulp larger than her entire upper body
but she was crying and stuff cause she cut her knee
so I picked her up and carried her home 2 blocks outta my way
no hero-ish at all really but her blood managed to stain my shirt

in this particular situation, I would have jumped in to get them.
It depends on risks too, like, if there is a high risk of me dying too, and it were me vs a professional that is trained to do the saving, I'd leave it to a pro. There has to be a chance. With those kids, I know how to swim, I swim well, I use to hold my brother while swimming and can handle their size to carry them, I know CPR, etc. I guess it's the kind of thing where if I'm able to, I'll do it.

I swirve to avoid hitting squirrels while driving all the time - cause squirrels are cool and stay busy collecting and saving their nuts and they deserve all the respect they can get. (y)

with animals, never swerve. Always brake. That's how people end up hitting other people or ending up down a ravine, yo.
I think I've had about 5 to 7 run ins with animals. Luckily, I am never going ridiculously fast and am paying attention to the road ahead of me, so I've been able to break in time each time.

Oh god, I am always doing that though and my driving instructor goes mental. Especially birds, "You do know that birds can just fly away don't you?"
I've saved someone from drowning. Well, a small kid that had no armbands on and forgot to grip onto the sides and was going down the current of a river, I suppose that counts?

I've never saved anyone's life before but I did save some little kid's fingers from getting bit off by a llama at the zoo once. (y)
The last time I did something where I just reacted was around 3 years ago. I was getting some dvd's with my wife and these two crazy tweeked out guys came into the store and started harassing people. I'm a pretty big guy so I'm guessing that's why they left me alone but I just knew something was going to happen. One of these fine young men started talking to some guy (I later found out the poor dude had never met this tweek in his life) about how they just jumped some guy and "busted his face up with his brass knuckles". I saw him show the guy his brass knuckles and I quickly went up to the checkout desk to get someone to call the cops. The tweekers then went outside and I went out after them to make sure they didn't go start shit with some other poor soul. Well, they did. First they just yelled at this poor fucker (who was so drunk he couldn't walk straight) then Mr. Brass Knuckles socked him in the back of the head as he was trying to walk away. My wife, who had come out a little after me with the movies, started yelling at them. "Leave him alone you assholes!!!" I told her to go back inside and make sure the stupid video clerks called the cops right now. I then started running toward the hurt drunk guy yelling like a madman for the tweekers to "get the fuck out of here NOW!" They both took off and I grabbed the drunk guy (who was bleeding like crazy from this monster gash in his head) and pulled him into the video store. I took him into the bathroom and helped stop the bleeding untill the cops and the paramedics got there. Later my wife told me to never do something like that again. I told her I wouldn't.
I probably would though.

I walked in on a girl in a psychiatric hospital who was trying to hang herself with her bedsheet.
Three years later, I'm on a schoolbus for a field trip. The girl comes up to me on the bus and says "I know you. You saved my life."

Thats freakin awsome. I remember I kind of saved a baby when it fel in a pool but I didnt even need to get in it just slipped off the side. I just ran down and grabbed its arm and lifted it. An my sister when we were at the beach few years ago she fell into like a hole in the sand, and she was panicking like a nut. Like she was going under the water kickin an screamin so I quickly swam over to her and pulled her out. She was like choking on water for a bit but she was alright. But iv stopped a lot of babie's from eating little sharp toys an shit when no one else was around. But no I wouldnt call myself a hero. No way.
When I was young Superman was my hero, still love the movies to this day bring back memories an shit
