Bob

163. percentile score 89.

meaning 89% of all people who took the LSAT did worse than me

meaning i'm just an itch under the top 10th percentile

meaning i'm probably going to law school

you're the first to know

before my friends

before my parents

how sad is that?

though i must say, 1 AM on a friday (saturday, techinically) is an odd time to recieve this news. i'm drunk right now, i was planning to get even drunker and play video games, but now i feel kind of guilty. my plan was to celebrate. in my head, this was going to be momentous. but all i've got is budweiser. interesting

Good for you! Do you know where you want to go?

Why do you want to go to law school, anyway? :p

Good for you! Do you know where you want to go?

not yet, no. but i didn't know where or why i wanted to go to college, either, and here i am, graduating on time and in fabulous standing (not to brag, but...well, ok, i'm bragging).

i guess, at a very basic level, i want to go because i've nearly been through four years of college and i still have no idea what the hell i want to do with my life yet (though i do know what i DON'T want to do, and that's to work for an insurance company). i have the means to put that decision off for another three years (as a lot of political science majors are prone to doing), and that's what i'm going to do. that may seem like a terrible reason to go to law school, but if i wasn't cut out for it, i wouldn't have managed an elite score on the admissions test, would i?

man, i'm getting defensive and nobody's even accusing me of anything yet, that must be a bad sign. still, i'm pretty goddamn impressed with myself. that one extra percent to get me into the top 10th would have been outstanding, but what can you do? according to my LSAT prep book, 163 is (was) approximately 89.6 on the percentile scale, so i must be just a few tenths away from being rounded up to 90. god, that's annoying.

OH, MOTHERFUCKER

i'm looking at my detailed score report, and this is so rude. the way the test works, is there's five multiple choice sections, and a writing sample; the writing sample isn't scored per se, it's just kind of like an application essay that law schools look at. the score is based on four out of the five multiple choice sections; one is just a "test" section, or something like that; it's not scored, it's used for...i forget what it's used for, but it's not scored. the catch, though, is that they don't strictly TELL you which section is ungraded. it IS certain that there are two logical reasoning, one analytical reasoning, and one reading comprehension sections that will be graded. so whatever the extra one is, that's going to be the ungraded part.

anyway, i was informed by a friend that section 3 was the ungraded part, and i kind of trusted him, because section 3 was one of the repeat sections. i didn't necessarily take it lightly, i still gave it my attention, but i didn't take it AS seriously as i took section 2. as it turns out, section 2 was the ungraded one

that's gotta be at least one percentile point right there. bunch of jerks.

sue you if you dont stop making fun of me

i'm looking a little closer at my score report. i actually got a little lucky. there was a series of questions on the section that i suck at that i had to guess at, because i ran out of time; i got half of them right, 3 out of 6

Law school is boring for the most part. But our students society gets a gigantic budget from law firm sponsorship for things such as bbq's, nights out (at pubs/nightclubs/whatever), pizza, cruises, balls and other such things. So its worth going to law school here just for the social aspect.

That's the reason a lot of people go to law school. I don't recommend it, but it works for a lot of people. I also know quite a few lawyers who regret having gone to law school. I don't know what it costs and what your financial situation is, but it seems like a lot of money to spend to find yourself.

I have a feeling that you'll have a good resume and be employable, which will put you ahead of most of your competitors.

btw, I really wanted to be a lawyer, I loved law school, I did really well there, and I'm awesome at what I do now, but I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I can't imagine being a lawyer for another 25 years.

Most lawyers don't even practice law. It's not like TV. And anyhow, I'm only brash when witnesses won't answer my questions.

This isn't true for all law schools. At most US law schools, the first year is living hell (to weed out those who shouldn't have gone -- like The Paper Chase but not so Harvard). While I met some good people, most of my fellow students were insecure assholes who I would never want to socialize with. :p

Listen, I spent all day today with a lying ass who then threatened me during a break when no one was around. But it was kind of fun. It's the days when I'm stuck in the office that are miserable. But most attorneys don't ever go into a courtroom.

Bob
10-22-2005, 12:38 AM
yeah, i can't ever see myself in a courtroom setting, i just don't have that kind of a personality, i'd get intimidated so damn easily. i tend to concede very quickly in verbal arguments. the only part about that i can see myself enjoying is saying "OBJECTION!" at the top of my lungs, which probably doesn't come up as often as i think it does.

i keep thinking of that mr show sketch:

"You come in here with brains full of SOUP! and you leave, with your minds a steel TRAP! with the BLOODY FOOT OF LAW INSIDE!"

Meh, I dont know anybody thats failed any law subjects. In fact its pretty cruisey except about a week before essays are due (theres only one for each law subject each semester) and a week or two before exams (only one for each once again). Theres only 8 contact hours per week for the law component of my degree...and many many more socialising hours :D

You never know. The students who end up being the best litigators are pretty surprising. I was going to be a transactional business attorney. I almost dropped out of law school when I found out we had to take a trial class. But I keep falling into jobs that forced me to do things I didn't want to do. I ended up loving court. I still can't believe some of the things I've done.

All you have to do is watch working attorneys sometime. I quickly realized that if I knew the facts of my case, I'd be better than half the attorneys who go to court all the time.

you're just doing it because you want social justice right? you'll never be one of those corporate lawyers earning gazillions sweeping white collar crime under the table right?

i suppose that's true, yeah. i just find that i'm often horribly inarticulate in terms of speeches. if i'm nervous, i'll say a sentence five times in five different ways before i'm done with it, and still nobody knows what the hell i'm talking about. i really prefer to write things. there's no backspace key when you're talking.

I have a $400 white gold Cartier pen. I managed to get the jeweler to throw it in for free when I bought my wife's engagment ring, which I already got a good deal on. My bargaining skills are off the chain, dog.

that's great news, bob! congrats! :)

i adore being in the courtroom daily, and couldn't imagine myself doing anything else right now even though i'm grossly underpaid. if you like to write, perhaps appellate work or contracts is what you would excell at.

i have finally gotten burned by a couple of clients. twice in one week, as a matter of fact. one client needed a 24 hour furlough from jail to attend his sister's funeral. i busted my ass for 3 days to make it happen. he never returned to the jail and now there's a felony escape warrant out for him, and likely an aiding and abetting out for his family members. another client said he had to go for training for the marines and he faxed a paper to me from his commanding officer. that fax ended up being fraudulent and now there's a warrant out for him and the state is likely going to forward the fraudulent document to federal authorities.

assholes.

Congrats on your scores, man. You'll be alright.

I never took my SAT's or my ACT's. I remember hearing from other people that they took up an entire Saturday. When I was seventeen there was no way in hell I was gonna waste a perfectly good Saturday trying to improve myself and get my future in order when I could be out with my raggedy-assed friends loafing around doing absolutely jack shit.

Nope. No sir. No way.

My logic and thought process twenty years ago leaves me speechless today.

You know, I didn't even NEED my SAT or ACT scores to get into college? I didn't even need to graduate or get my GED! And I'm at the #18 state school in America, having not completed high school!

Real easy. I didn't graduate by 3 credits in high school, so I could either go back and re-take them, or go to community college. I went to Montgomery College which was open to everyone, and didn't require a diploma (though I was forced to take 6 credits my first semester, until I was officially in "good" standing). I graduated with honors, had a 3.6 overall GPA, and applied to University of MD. Montgomery College is considered the backdoor to UMD, so it was extremely easy to get in. The requirements for transfer students from other colleges are less, because they have shown that they're able to handle college life. The average SAT score of incoming freshman is around 1300, and their GPA's are in the 3.6+ range.

And mind you, my GPA in high school was 2.6 when I left, and I only got a 1070 on my SAT's.

Booyah.

nice work, dude. it really seems just a little while ago you started college. maybe i'm getting old or something. but i'm really not.

i think i'm going to follow you into the don't-know-what the fuck to do poli science major too.

it was like that when i got my ACT scores back. i was like, holy shit, i can't believe i did that well, then went on with a normal day.

the ACT isn't that bad, but the new SAT sucks. it's only a little bit longer, but it's divided up into like 10 sections, and there's one "test" section on it, too, that isn't graded. i did poorly on my SATs but there was no way i was going to retake it.

today i decided i'm going to go to business school.
that's probably going to change tomorrow.

i dont think its bragging, youre genuinely excited, happy and proud

theres a tendency where people often confuse bragging for a need to communicate and it annoys me
