it opens Nov. 4th
and I'm still a little weary.
I'll see it, but Sam Mendes has a track record for building lots of buzz for mediocre films.

I read the book, and I am puzzled by how they propose to make it a movie. There is very little Desert Storm action and a lot of him thinking about things that took place at various points in time (including a lot of stuff that didn't happen to the narrator). I figure they'll change it a lot an make it more exciting. I wonder whether they'll make him and the other marines sympathetic too. The characters all dislike women a whole lot.

It's quite a good book. A real fast read. The author was very honest about how scared and messed up he and his fellow marines were. The guys train, sit around, dig holes, and wait for action. It's really about getting in the head of scared young marines, with almost no real action. I quite liked some of the guys even though they weren't easy to like. I'm worried the movie will have them shooting people and blowing things up, because the audience for war movies might be disappointed otherwise.

I think it should be a rule in the entertainment industry (ie film, not so much literature if that's even considered a form of entertainment anymore) that a war cannot be exploited for profit until 20 or more years after said war's conclusion.

The book was written by Anthony Swofford and it's about his time during the Gulf War. I read it a couple months ago.
I'm just waiting to see the part when they used the camels (or was it horses?) as .50 cal pracitce. Also the part where the author's platoon mate completed his morning ritual by jabbing his bayonette into this dead Iraqi that was next to thier tent.

Nonsense. So by that thinking "Apocalypse Now," "The Deer Hunter" and "Platoon" shouldn't have been released because they were made less than 20 years after the conclusion of the Vietnam war? (They also made Vietnam movies during the conflict, but they usually didn't cite Vietnam directly, instead using a different war, in the case of "MASH" they used Korea, even if it was truly about Vietnam)
The same deal (if not moreso) with WWII movies. They made tons during the war and once it ended, they made a lot more. I guess "Casablanca" and "The Best Years of Our Lives" shouldn't have been made either, huh?
I'm sorry, but this "rule" is just silly. Why should it be 20 years and why is it "exploiting"?
P.S. - "Jarhead" looks awesome. I hope it's as good as "Three Kings." (y)

Great book, the movie needs more charcater analysis than action to be a success.
