View Full Version : What do they make their beats on?

Does anyone know what program they use to make their beats on? I understand that on Ill Communication and Check Your Head they used mostly live beats. And I know Mark Nishita does a lot of keyboards and shit. But I know on Hello Nasty and To The 5 Boroughs it got a little more digital. Does ANYONE know what the beats are made on? I make beats myself and I'm interested.

A lot of the shit on their first four albums is just strait up loops. You take the drum break of the album you're sampling and then eq it or whatever and there you have it. I'm not sure exactly what equipment they were using but its more likely than not hardware samplers and sequencers. They have money so they can probably get whatever they want as far as hardware (drum machines to generate the drums, samplers to record and playback samples from records and whatnot, and sequencers to put it all together). The common ones are the 808, the SP12, the SP1200, the MPC2000, the Korg Triton, etc., but I'm sure the Beasties had the resources to pretty much fuck around with whatever they wanted to. There's just a ton of shit out there with just drum machines, samplers, and sequencers, and when you get into effects and equalizers and compressors it gets mind boggling. I know Adrock did a lot of the beats on Hello Nasty with the SP12, just chopping stuff up and flipping more than strait looping samples. The hardware samplers and squencers are usually more hands-on and intuitive, and they also give certain sounds that are hard to reproduce.

To the Five Burroughs was put together with computer software. I think they used Pro-Tools as their main program. The advantage with the software is that its usually more advanced and gives you more options in chopping, sequencing, etc. The disadvantage is that you loose some of the sonic uniqueness of using hardware equipment and the process isn't as hands-on.
