we had just dropped off one of our friends, and there were 3 of us left in the car. we were leaving the driveway (it was up a small hill to the main road), when i saw this streak of white/blue. at first i thought it was a firework, but then realized it was way too big, and the whole sky in front of us turned green. there was no way we could have been in a better spot to watch. it was phenomenal.

Mars was close to the earth last night.

i think i might have saw it. just from a different angle and intensity. where, specifically, do you live?

that probably wasn't a comet - more likely a meteorite.

If a comet hits Earth I'm farily certain this message board won't be the first place you hear about it. Cosmo's right. It was probably a meteorite.

Considering there aren't any known comets close enough to Earth's orbital path at the moment to be seen clearly with the naked eye, I am also going to go with meteorite.

Still pretty cool, though (y) - although actually a few thousand or so meteors enter the Earth's atmosphere on any given day depending on the time of year (orbital position), it is still fairly rare to see a true "fireball", which is what it sounds like you've described. So good for you!

^ dammit. i got home, and looked up comets, cause i knew there was a difference between one in space, and one that enters the atmosphere, and then i put comet anyway. me vry smrt.

i specifically live in southern New Brunswick, Canada.
