real quick, what's the lowdown on joining a credit union? what are the benefits to it/drawbacks/what's the point? i'm thinking of joining one and i don't know much about them or how they work.
Usually lower or no fees, free services like overdraft protection, also no minimum balance. Depending on the credit union you use.

yes and hopefully they give you a better interest rate than regular banks do.
I joined one soley for the purpose of taking out a loan and building some credit.

That's their main pull, more personal service and better intrest rates. Limitations like set deposits and withdrawls are one of their only downfalls, but for people looking to build credit and get a good loan rate joining a credit union seems to be the way to go.

i have a credit union thing. i thought the only way you could be apart of it was either be related to a member of the union or work for the city/union it's apart of. my mom works for the city. well at least that's how the one im apart of works

I belong to one of the government's credit unions through my dad's work. $50 to join. I get car financing at like, 3.95% I believe, which I hear is good.
I go into Mitsubishi's car sales place (to get to the backroom of car parts and service), and this skeezy guy comes up to me.
"Hey, girlie. Lookin' to trade in your Galant?"
"Um, I'm just looking at the differences in the 2005 and 2002, but I'm not interested. I still love my '02 very much, thanks."
"Yeah? Well how much ya payin' NOW?"
"$186 a month."
"...Really? Well, um. Yeah, that's uh, pretty good."
And then he walked away.
I guess Mitsubishi sales couldn't offer me a better APR. So, yeah, join one.

another top for the credit union I am a part of, is that it is non-profit organization, so the money made on interest on loans and stuff goes towards the divedends on everyone's account. So, you're not really getting it stuck to buy big business corporation banks and filling up some CEO's pocket.
That's why I still bank there even though I am in France (helps for paying the school loans on the net too to avoid international fees if I would have it done from a bank here).

Back home, before I moved...my account was with a credit union. I know that I only qualified because my mother is a government employee and her account was with them. They let my sister and I open one because we were her children. Like, we went through her name, but we had our own seperate accounts. However, I don't know if that even matters anymore, as far as having to be a government employee, to even qualify for the lower rates through them. But, they did offer lower rates, no fees, free checking, etc. However, I didn't like the fact that I only had access to my account while in my city, only. They didn't have their banks in other cities, so if I went out of town and wanted to deposit money into my account or something like that...I couldn't. It wasn't like SunTrust or another large bank that you could have access to to account anywhere you went.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to get your financial questions about Credit Unions answered from a Credit Union or perhaps from your employer.
The Beastie Boys Message Board may not be your most reliable source for info on this issue.
yeah...but at least you get to hear first hand experience with them hear, brosef.

im a fan of them. once you've built up even a semi-decent credit rating they'll throw a loan at you.

I'm pretty sure the Beastie Boys Message Board is a pretty bad place to go for any of your "reliable source" information, but if you look, a good 50% of the threads here are for advice. The other percents are for fights, drama, and "Sexual Innuendo/Poop" threads.
