NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Indie distributor ThinkFilm said Tuesday it nabbed worldwide rights to "Awesome: I F-----' Shot That," a kaleidoscopic Beastie Boys concert documentary shot mainly by 50 fans on hand-held Hi8 cameras at Madison Square Garden.
The film was directed by Beastie rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch, using the moniker Nathaniel Hornblower. "Frantic" is the word Yauch used to describe the footage, which he assembled from material recorded October 9, 2004, by fans, six band friends using DV 24p cameras and two high-quality tour video cameras offering bird's-eye and long-distance views.

Yauch and Jon Doran produced the project via their Oscilloscope Films for about $1 million, which is likely to rise as music rights are cleared. The film has been submitted to Sundance in hopes that it can raise its profile on the festival circuit before a spring release.

"Preproduction was like three days," said Yauch, who was inspired by logging on to message boards where his young fans posted. "Some kid put up video from his phone at eight frames a second," he said, and that inspired his low-res video/high-quality audio vision. None of the 50 cameras was lost to fans, Yauch said, "but granted, we took their driver's licenses."

http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=58601&highlight=awesome

so when they say festivals does that mean we are going to be able to see it in theaters?

switching between angles and audio, it sounds like some of the ideas we have been suggesting are making the DVD...

I have two things to say- this is why I come to the message board, for great insider news like this....

and secondly...

"AWESOME, I FUCKIN SHOT THAT!!!!!"

I cannot fucking wait....

Yauch, if you read this, how many of the 50 fans(I thought it ended up being only Thirty something) ended up actually getting their footage on the DVD, and do you still plan on giving fans credits at the end?

When the movie Free Tibet came out they had a handful of showings across the country in major cities. So I would think they would do something kinda similar.

Ooh, that's really exciting news! Wouldn't it be fun to catch it in a theater at a film festival? (I saw the Metallica thing really early that way.) It would be cool to see it with other fans.

Better yet is the hint about possible special features on the DVD.

[I'm a little concerned that I will spend the whole time looking for myself in the audience :o ]

You forgot to give credit to me on my quote :D ..j/k

I like the title to, but i think it will be changed. What happens if a 12 year old walks up to it in a music store and asked his mom if she would buy it for him and then she sees the title 'awesome I fuckin' Shot that'. I'd say the mom would say no.

Then again who cares. This is for the 'real' fans anyways! Right! So fuck that 12 year old and the mom too (depending if she is a milf or not)

Also, when Yauch inevitably comes here to suss out what we have to say on the matter I want to be the first to say: You legend

although I have to ask, is it going to be just the concert? Or are you putting some narration or something there to give it a more 'documentary' feel and make it presentable on the festival circuit?

'Awesome' pickup for ThinkFilm
Viewers go behind the camera for Beastie concert pic

By IAN MOHR

Indie distribber ThinkFilm has acquired world rights to the Beastie Boys concert pic "Awesome: I Fuckin' Shot That."
Pic was helmed by Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch under his directing pseudonym Nathaniel Hornblower. He also produced with Jon Doran.

Project was shot at an Oct. 9 Madison Square Garden show in Gotham by handing out 50 cameras to audience members in the sellout crowd. Pic includes aud's perspectives from 50 camera angles.

Think plans to open the pic in the spring after sending it on the fest circuit.

"(This film) is totally modern and witty aesthetically," said Think theatrical distribution head Mark Urman, "but is also fabulous to watch and listen to."

"(The film was shot by) a bunch of untrained camera operators," said Yauch. "But that gives the film sincerity. The people that shot it were feeling it."

Headed by Jeff Sackman, Think is in current release with the docu "The Protocols of Zion."

I didn't realize after the concert I could have kept filming. I would have went around to people and filmed them afterward.

It looked really cool, just a little clip of the band running on stage at the beginning of the show, maybe 20 seconds long. Yeah, I'm all about G'nR now. I only came back here because I was considering starting a public beef with Yauch. I was thinking I'd post some shit here and also hold a press conference to air my grievances to the media about Yauch and his saying I won't like the film. But then I realized that might actually benefit Yauch instead of hurt him. A beef's all about damage, so that's no good.

Some of the members on the G'nR board suggested I challenge Yauch to a fist fight, but that goes against both his and my nonviolent beliefs, so that's no good either.

I can't get no satisfaction!

I'm not crazy about that title.

As a diehard fan, the most interesting thing of late is how un-fashionable the B-Boys have become. Like 16 year old indie fans would be all "Who says 'Fuck' nowadays, it's tre lame'(i'm clearly demonstrating how un-fashionable I, in turn, can be ).

I like how much more real the interwoven global network and time have made them.

I couldn't think of anything more cleverer than that title, but it still sucks. :D

"Awesome, I fuckin' shot that!" would be words spoken by a fan.

exactly!! a fan who shot the film you are watching!!

Another thing on this topic that I said I wasn't going to comment on. It's finally become clear to me -- at least I think -- what is going on with this film. We were all expecting two different products from the Madison Square Garden show: a film (or documentary) PLUS a straight-up concert dvd. Right? I think our concert dvd will just be the film with extras (alternate angles, etc.), not a straight-up concert dvd. No?

I expect to see the concert in its entirety, nothing else.... thats it, thats all...
when was there ever a :film" or a documentary? i think the confusion with everyone is they are now calling it a film or a concert film or a documentary is because they are marketing to the independent film crowd - festivals and theaters...

plus, as a fan who shot the concert, i think its great that they chose that title, that they gave the voice to the fan.

sure, i think it is a bit odd, and it will difficult to market, but isnt any publicity good publicity? i love that ThinkFilm really believed
in the Beasties Boys and that this is going to see the light of day...

It was Yauch who referred to both a "film" and a "dvd."

this is the film!! first it was a DVD now its widescreen release!

So, would you say that's your voice? You talk like that?

I have been waiting for the moment when I could see this thing and say those exact words...

and I have a degree...

I think it all depends on how confident you are when you annunciate the actual words.

Caught up in the excitement of watching the footage I shot with my cam at a sold-out Madison Square Garden, I would proudly say, "Awesome: I fuckin' shot that".

I agree it's not too kid-friendly, but I remember having to convince my parents to let me go to the 87 concert because there was talk of violence, naked girls, and giant penises. :p

I don't mind the title. I don't love it but I suck at naming things, including myself. I'm guessing BBs want to clearly signal to purchasers that there is no implied production quality with this "film."

I say "awesome" myself, but in a sort of self-mocking way. I also mispronounce words on purpose, like I say "buff-it" for buffet.

people people stop over analyzing for godsakes
its a fucking brilliant title,
didn't it make you all smile when you read it? i laughed my arse off.
who the hell else could come up with such a damn stupid funny name and get away with it?
publicity at its best.
and perhaps a wee bit of jealousy on the parts of those who eh - didn't fucking shoot it?
just twidlle your thumbs and wait for it to hit the screens

haha, brilliant!!

seriously, analyzing a bit much are we?

shifting responsibility?
laying the blame?
yea, you called me a fool, Mira, and basically described the footage as crappy and poor quality based on a two minute promo video that you didn't like...

just let the fans be excited and stop trying to come up with negatives about this project...

Some of you need to lighten up and learn when Miramanee is being funny.

Plus you can be a big fan, yet pick apart all the little stuff about your beloved band. I mean, that's what big fans do. That's the whole point of this place, right?

I could have fucking shot the movie, and I had a better vantage point than all of you, but I would have been unable to hold a camera steady. So there.

Ridiculous.

I hate predictions, but I think it may be like a skate-flick, insofar as the fist five seconds will feature the person who said "Awesome, I fuckin shot that" saying "Awesome, I fuckin shot that.".

midzi
11-08-2005, 11:50 PM
I'm not crazy about the title because it uses a fan's "voice" and ridicules the fan. I have to believe it was not done mean-spiritedly, but still!

"Awesome, I fuckin' shot that!" would be words spoken by a fan. It's language, or a style of speaking, of a less sophisticated, maybe less educated, person. I mean, really, who talks like that? If a person said, "Awesome, I fuckin' shot that!" to me, I'd think, "Fool."

Why name the film using the fan's voice? And why make that fan sound like a fool? It makes me question if that's what my voice sounds like to the Beastie Boys. You know, foolish.

Now because of your analysis I dislike the title even more. :p

I'm not feeling it, as the kids say! (thats the title....) If it is going to be shown on the big screens, it's the wrong title for a DVD! however it is growing on me. I do like the different angles on there new disc! TT, ChCIO & OLTNYC!!! I would of thought that RRNN would be on there, but Im sure it will be on the DVD!!......always great work guys, even though we always critise!!!

P.S. they were just on channel 4 (UK TV) for greatest ever gigs!!! (they played FFYR @ Brixton 87)

It seems to me most people aren't feeling the title. So far, the only person who has championed the title is someone who actually shot some footage, which kinda demonstrates how the title is exclusionary as well.

it's fun, it's about the fans, it's awesome!

So what do YOU think of this film business, Pooty? I'd like to hear the 'tang weigh in his opinion.
I didn't like the video (Brass Monkey) the first time I saw it because of the quality of the transfer, but I watched it lastnight on dvd and it most definately has a place in my heart now.

I am anxious to see what the rest of the dvd will look like.

About the name; I think they could have come up with something a little more kosher for all audiences. I don't know how they will market a dvd with the word "Fuck" in the title. I wanna beable to go to my local Target or other chain store to pick it up, but I don't know if they will carry this dvd with such a word in the title. Maybe if they rap in a foil pack and list it as a Beastie Boy concert Documentary, they could market it a bit better.

By the way M, congrats on the logo printed on the sticker on SGH.

Maybe all the stickers fell off.

I would also much rather have the sticker right on the cover. So my shrink wrap was laying on the table with the cd. Someone cleaned off the table and I noticed the cd was put on the cd stack and no shrink wrap laying anywhere.

Come to realize, he who picked it up knew the sticker was important to me cut it out and placed it neatly beneath the cd inside.

Beasties Talk Home Movie
Fans armed with videocams film 2004 New York gig

Last year, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch was perusing the group's online message board and got an idea: "Some kid had posted part of our show that he'd shot on his cell phone," says Yauch. "There was something cool about the fact that it was really low resolution and had this slow stutter-frame effect."
So Yauch -- who directs the group's videos under the pseudonym Nathanial Hornblower -- bought fifty Hi8 hand-held video cameras and on October 9th, 2004, distributed them to fans at the Beasties' hometown blowout at New York's Madison Square Garden. They also enlisted six of their buddies to document the gig on higher-tech digital cameras. "They were free to shoot whatever they wanted," says Yauch. "They could walk around, zoom in, zoom out, dance or just bug the fuck out."

After a year of intense editing, Yauch has pieced together Awesome: I Fuckin' Shot That, which will be distributed by Th!nk Film (the company responsible for Murderball and The Aristocrats) and will hit movie theaters in spring 2006. A DVD release will follow next summer. "It was a lot of work -- there were so many possibilities of how to attack it," says Yauch. "But I'm really happy with the way it came together."

During the Garden performance, the Beasties -- Yauch, a.k.a. M.C.A., Adrock and Mike D -- bust through cuts like "Sabrosa," "Ricky's Theme," "Brass Monkey," "Sure Shot," "Hello Brooklyn" and "Sabotage." Doug E. Fresh joins them on "Time to Get Ill"; there was also a hilarious skit starring Will Ferrell as President Bush that was broadcast during the show.

Toward the end of the gig, the Beasties hiked up to the nosebleed section for a rendition of "Intergalactic." After the show, the fifty fans turned in their footage. Says Yauch, "Then we returned all the cameras to the stores where we bought 'em."
