I'm going to kill my Balkan history teacher. He SUCKS at lecturing so much. He gets up there, reads a fuckin' speech that leaves the whole class confused. He doesn't have an interwoven theme, he gets up there and spews out fact after fact with little correlation to anything, and talks about how there's like 10 different countries, 50 different political parties, 100 different politicians, 20 different religions AND THEY ALL HATE EACH OTHER.

This is bullshit. This isn't what I signed up for. I signed up for a competent professor who would come to the conclusion the first day of class that most of the people in his class do NOT have a general understanding of the Balkans. I signed up for a teacher who would break down the region and make sense of things, not a teacher who would tell you to read his equally as confusing book if we had questions.

Midterm tomorrow, too. (n) :(

You and I both know the Balkan Crises of 1912-13 helped fuel the fire for WWI.

It's a buncha shit though. Here, maybe you can help. Answer these questions and THEN we'll talk about how the Balkans don't suck.

1. What were the major political parties and their programs in the region’s states in the 1920’s? What changed them in the 1930’s? What changed for the small communist parties?

2. How did the foreign policies of the major European powers change toward the region from the 1920’s to the 1930’s?

3. How did the national aspirations of particular Balkan ethnic groups contribute to the Balkan Wars? To the outbreak and course of the First World War?

4. What process and problems in creating modern European states did the newly-configured Southeastern Europe make after the First World War? Compare and contrast at least two states.

Fine. Don't fucking yell SOURCE???? at me though, I'll just answer them with the knoeldge I have right now. I have macaroni on the stove cooking.

1. What were the major political parties and their programs in the region’s states in the 1920’s? What changed them in the 1930’s? What changed for the small communist parties?

Well, I couldn't tell you about the 1920's. I'd imagine post-war they were in a fragile state which would eventually lead to the adaptation of communism. With Russia gaining a shitload of industry and manpower in the '30s, I'd say that the Balkan countries would become more influenced by the 'red terror' coming from the east. Any small communist parties would likely have gained momentum with support coming from the east for a communist movement.

2. How did the foreign policies of the major European powers change toward the region from the 1920’s to the 1930’s?

I don't think I know enough to answer this, but I'd wager to guess that there was a huge increase in trading among eastern nations. Since the Ottoman Empire basically took a shit-fit and crumbled, there would have been more freedom to trade with other nations. And uhhhhh yeah, don't forget communism.

3. How did the national aspirations of particular Balkan ethnic groups contribute to the Balkan Wars? To the outbreak and course of the First World War?

Nationalism was a huge factor in starting up the First World War. Look at German/English/French and how they were desperately trying to prove who was the dominant power in Europe. Anyways, back to the Balkans. I would say since that area is chock full of different ethnic groups struggling for independance (Greek, Slav, Croat, Serbs, even some Austo-Hungarian) that this attempt to establish an ethinic group as a nation would lead to border disputes and when you have those, you usually have war. Gosh it's been like 3 years since I did this shit in school....

4. What process and problems in creating modern European states did the newly-configured Southeastern Europe make after the First World War? Compare and contrast at least two states.

I dunno. Do it yourself. :p

Well, yeah, but that's the thing. I need to know small, minute facts about each topic. Like specifically how each country was affected, what parties were popular, what political people were in each country, etc. etc. It wouldn't be so bad if the teacher went over this step by step in class, he just rushes through it and says "Read my book for more information." And his book rushes through everything equally as fast, and I can't seem to pull out from the text what's more important than other things. It's like he gives equal importance to every treaty, settlement, war, religious group, etc. etc. so it's impossible.

Thus Balkan history sucking. Our substitute teacher (from Bulgaria) was actually quite good. She told us what she was going to talk about, talked about it, asked for questions and clarified.

I hate having professors that don't know how to teach and are just here for free use of the University's books and tools to further their research. He just gets in front of the class and basically gives us a "Listen to how smart I sound" lecture.

Bleh...I gotta go read some more.

the part about knowing the little things is stupid. Balkan history by itself must suck balls, but collectively with the history of Europe it is a tasty feature that deserves a chapter of reading/lecture.

Yeah, no more than a chapter though. And it should be related to WWI and human rights violations after WWII only.

Anything more shall be burned.

The region has been featured heavily in my decline of the roman empire reading.

I don't know what you were thinking when you took the class. Was this another case of it just fitting in your schedule? :)

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Who was given the 48 hour ultimatum, and to who was it given on July 28th, 1914.

If you can answer that Queenie, you are set. ;)

QueenAdrock

Serbia was. They were given an ultimatum by Austria-Hungary, given to them full well knowing that they would not accept all its provisions, which gave them a justification for war.

Right?

Welp, I heard about Bosnia in my human rights violations class last semester, and I'm interested in human rights violations, so I thought "Why not?"
