I read it. At the time, I was very much into the Grateful Dead and the nomad lifestyle. (shut up, chumps!). It had a huge impact on me. Loved it.

I didn't like it so much. First of all as a female, I didn't feel it had much to offer to me - it felt like a "boy's club" book. Secondly, it didn't feel all that 'revolutionary' to me. I can see that in the context of its time it may have been so, but personally I didn't see as it really stood the test of time.

couldn't get into on the road, liked Dharma Bums better- but that probably because Dharma bums is more about jack's life in the bay area and since that's where I'm from it resonated with me better.
shut up I like run-on sentences.

Yeah, Dharma Bums had more to offer, in my opinion. On the road was a pretty nice read and I can see why it was so influential at the time, but it's not that great out of its context.
I really, really recommend "Minor characters" by Joyce Johnson, to get the "hidden" female side of the whole beat thing. But regardless of the gender issue, it's a very interesting read and a good story.
