View Full Version : ok, tzar needs some rap throw into his ears.
calling on all the people that know their shit...
i need some.....early 90's to mid 90's rap. something recent but too recent, but also something that's newer than old school rap.
i'd also like to branch out to the groups i've never really got into heavily. and they would be the de la souls, dilated peoples, pharcydes, jurassic 5s - all those type of groups..
i need album suggestions here. i've heard and touched all the wu-tang, beasties, nas... now i need some easy laid-back rap.
any suggestions would be tops. (y)

where do we start?
they are very much new in the scale of hip-hop but Little Brother are really good, laidback hip-hop
both albums, "The Listening" and "The Minstrel Show" are worth picking up
if you havnt got into gangstarr then start with their best off..."Full Clip"
Pharoah Monche "Internal Affairs" is an oft forgotten classic
OH! Tribe Called Quest.....might as well start with "anthology" then discover their albums from their
OH! early-mid ninties quality - BLACK SHEEP - A wolf in sheep's clothing (y)
and
if you want to branch out....
anything by Mf Doom, but id specifically suggest:
MF Doom "Operation Doomsday", Victor Vaughan, "Mm...Food" and Danger Doom.
this is all off the top of my head...

Seeing as you are into metal you must absolutely get the Judgment Night soundtrack.
Albums I listened to back then:
Cypress Hill
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Snoop Doggy Dogg - Doggystyle
Ice T - Home Invasion
Ice Cube - Lethal Injection
Ice Cube - The Predator
Above The Rim (soundtrack)
Dr Dre - The Chronic
Public Enemy (several)

I'd say the first 3 Cypress records, 36 chambers, and yeah as people have already mentioned the material from a tribe called quest and the roots from around that time is good.

Yeah ok, temples of boom wasn't bad... ;)
i like it a lot (y)
maybe not all of it, theres certainly somre elements of filler, but its pretty dark and different in comaprison to a lot of shit out there at the time. muggs is always pretty different in terms of his production mind you, or was, but i liked how temples...wasn't just a black sunday re-hash.
ok ok everyone is mentioning ice cude and nwa and snoop doog and dre and all. some people are mentioning some Wu albums too? i said in the first post i've hit all that shit up. they're fine but i don't want full on gangsta rap - i want more de la soul, ATCQ, pharcyde, Roots type. i know what dre and nwa and all them sound like; i'm still foreign to the groups i mentioned. keep 'em coming...please.
i'm asking in the name of our religion; hip hop :D

Yo tzar, don't fuck with '3 feet' go straight to 'De la Soul is Dead', and buy Big's 'Ready to Die'. (y)
Also, go for the J5 e.p first. It gets arguably worse with each subsequent release.
Somebody mentioned Company Flow, only buy Funcrusher Plus.
You should get Mos Def 'Black on Both Sides' and Redman's 'Muddy Waters' or 'Whut thee Album?'.
Also definitley worth a nod is Soundbombing 2.
Do you have the first Handsome Boy Modelling School disc? Peep that. Also Prince Paul's 'A Prince Among Thieves' is dope.
And get the Dr. Octagon album with 'Blue Flowers' on it.
Oh, and Pharcydes 'Bizarre ride to' is not to be missed.
I'll keep thinking.
next time i go to the cd store; i'll see if i can find some of the cds mentioned. whatever is cheapest will be purchased (y)

Black Sheep is one of the bands I should listen to again. I saw a Black Sheep video at Yo! MTV (Brasil) last week and I felt some kind of nostalgy..... :)
And yesterday I saw in a roll Naughty By Nature - O.P.P., Cypress Hill - Insane In The brain and Public Enemy - Louder Than A Bomb.......... good shit (y)

i'm not sure what the time period is, but mos def's black on both sides always makes me feel good
i'm a casual rap fan at best (meaning i can't tell good from bad half the time, and i can't explain why i like what i like), but i can safely say that it's good. check that one out.
