Ok I'll describe the dvd.
If you don't want to know what it's like yet then don't read this post.

When you put the disk in, in the main menu there is a movie with the beasties racing in go-carts. The movie is looped seemless. Awesome shit.
The menu options are: play all, chapters and audio setup.

In the background of the chapter menu is a video for That's it, that's all. It's shot in an aquarium or something. It's shot with one camera on the floor and the beasties wear dope ass suits, glasses and Kangol hats.

In the background of the audio menu is footage from the making of Triple Trouble video.
The audio options are stereo and five-one.

my girlfriend works at a cd store and they already have the c.d. behind the counter, they are not allowed to sell or put it on the floor untill the release date

i know of a cd store that used to sell things before the release date or when they arrived at the store, they don't do this anymore cause they got in trouble

most cd stores have the cd in stock allready, just not on the floor

so taco zip has just found a store that is bending the rules a bit

Yeah, I went past a JB Hi-Fi store today and they're selling it like they should be. I didn't actually look inside...but I assume they're selling the DVD too. They should be anyway. It seems odd that it'd be delayed that long...

All of the shops said they have the CD but no DVD. I asked the guy at Myer when will the DVD be released and he said. But I felt better when in other store they told me that the fact they didn't order it means only that they will have it later, if not they will order it for me, either way I have to wait few more days.

Do You really think 2 videos and a "making of" is enough to justify buying a new album? It should come with sucker slapped on the side of the box.

I would have to agree with mantle here, everyone has to calm down a bit, its not a new album, its a greatest hits package the beasties released the equivalent to this in 1999 it was called the sounds of science (except it offered more than hits, i.e., b-sides, unreleased tracks, a full booklet with photos)

I will be getting the album because I collect everything the beasties put out, I already have all the individual singles for these songs and all the albums that these songs are on, I am getting the cd to complete the collection, I am not excited about it, its nothing really new

even on the dvd, the brass monkey video you can view on the net for free, and the "that's it, that's all" video sounds like its just in the back ground of the dvd menu, and is probably the same quality of the "rhyme the rhyme well" video

the way some of you people are reacting to this greatest hits package (that capitol is putting out to make money for Christmas) I would almost think some of you are "plants" put her from capitol records to promote the album

just my thoughts

dave790
11-06-2005, 04:41 PM
people can react to a beasties release however they want. if you're excited over it then fair enough, let them be excited. for some fans this is the first beasties release to come out in their time as a fan. there's no correct way to react to the solid gold hits release, people are going to have their own reasons as to why it excites them or doesn't. but at the end of the day i'm never going to complain over a fans enthusiasm to a beasties release.

i'm kinda in the middle, but i'll be buying it...why? cos i'm a fucking fan of the beastie boys, easy.

dave

p.s. by the way, this is by no means a 'looking for an argument with some of you i.e. brookln dust' response, i actually think that was really well reasoned argument. but hey, we can all leave our thoughts here :)

brooklyndust
11-06-2005, 04:48 PM

I got the CD/DVD today. I wasn't going to, actually went out to buy Stevie's new CD, but then I asked just in case cos the release date (I thought) was the 7th. But no, it was available behind the counter.

It's worth getting IMO, there are extra camera angles availabe on the TT5B vids on the DVD. They're pretty good, and I wasn't expecting them.

BTW, has anyone else noticed that the No Sleep vid seems slightly different in places? Is it just me? There's one part where the microphone wire rides up Adrocks boxers?! I have def not seen that before, is there two versions of that vid? Also, the instrumental break 2/3rd's of the way through Hay Ladies vid sounds different too, like there was a sample missing or chopped up diff. I've only listened once, so haven't really examined it, but somethings amiss....

The 'Hey Ladies' break was always different I think. Where it usually goes "HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY LADIES! one more time" is just a rolling bass-line, right?
I most definitely could be wrong. BUt it's usually different to the album version.

Actually, is Pass The Mic the version with the remix playing under "M-I-K-E to the D"?

And no disrespect to Brooklyndust because he's sound as, but I'm jonesing for those LTI and 5B videos.

I guess that's why I didn't by the CD only edition. Mantle ought to slap a 'Dipshit' sticker on the side of his head.

Thanks for the info so far...can you describe the inside packaging, too?

Any booklet, photos, funny info, etc? Basically I want to know what's inside to help with my decision on whether to get this thing or not. What it comes down to is 5 videos that I don't have, and little else. But if there are photos and shit, then maybe...

Thanks bro.

The dvd version is a double digipack. You know what's on the cover. On the back is the beastie graffity logo painted on a wall.
Inside under the cd is an old LTI pic. Under the dvd are the credits and license shit.

How was the commerical like???!

Hint: Go the the BeastieBoys.com main page (http://www.beastieboys.com) and click the pic of the kid on the right of the page.

Here's a thread (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=58695) about the commercial... that's how I found out about it.

By the way, too bad the DVD can't be played on my PC due to the copy control :(

Weird. I just tested this here...and it seems to play fine on a couple of different PC DVD drives.

Try another DVD player software maybe ? Instead of Windows Media Player.

I just saw a commercial on comedy central about it, I'ma get it especially for the DVD.
I saw that commercial, too! I was shocked that Comedy Central showed it because the only commercials they show on Comedy Central are stuff for thier own shows or Girls Gone Wild.

hate to break it to everyone

but the "that's it, that's all video" was probably done in one take, its right up there with "rhyme the rhyme well" (but i like that one better)

it's better than nothing, they didnt have to do anything for the dvd menu

I wouldnt count it as an official video

How does 5.1 surround mix sounds? Is it again pathetic as on Anthology DVD?

I haven't heard this dvd (yet!) but unless they went back to the original multitrack master tapes to make true surround mixes for all those tracks-a HUGE, expensive & time consuming thing to do-then I'm 99.9% sure these will sound just like the Anthology's 5.1 tracks (which I DO own). The Anthology used only fakey reverb sounds coming from the rear speakers-pretty boring stuff. But if they used more modern stereo-to-artificial surround conversion software, there might be a few random sounds popping up in back every once in a while (this is what "Dolby Pro-Logic II"*, "DTS:Neo" and other similar buttons can do on most 5.1 home systems), but to me this still sounds rather lame compared to a true surround mix. :(

here comes the corporate tool section :)......if someone wants to hear what true 5.1 surround music sounds like, buy one of these albums on the dvd-audio format which also play on regular dvd players: Beck's Sea Change or deluxe edition Guero, R.E.M.s Automatic For The People, Linkin Park's Reanimation (yea I know but it SOUNDS awesome!); Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Battles....; or for you old people ;) Steely Dan's Gaucho, Grateful Dead's Workingman's Dead or Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. And Peter Gabriel's Play video anthology also has excellent true 5.1 mixes.

* on my system at least, Hello Nasty actually sounds pretty cool when played back with Dolby Pro-Logic turned on-it's almost like they recorded the album this way on purpose (just like with movie soundtracks, you can record music albums using a Dolby ENcoder so sounds appear in the back when played at home with a Dolby DEcoder).

Just an FYI: the Video Anthology also includes (I think this is the exact number) forty four remixes. Very cool.

If you want to make a CD-R of them for personal use, you'll need to hook up the dvd player's left & right analog outputs to your soundcard's analog left/right input (>>> you might have to adjust recording levels manually-check the soundcard's manual). Or use a component CD burner, like this Sony (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5725771&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03034&id=1057490438375) sold at Best Buy-these types are especially good for recording vinyl & practically never make "coasters". You'll have to insert your own track markers, but quality never comes easy. And component burners are usually much easier to use too.

Yeah, the video has the baseline and the album version is different. (The "HEY" Part.)
In the video "Pass The Mic" the "M-I-K-E to the D" part is different than the album version, 'cause on the album the same tune continues and the video is a remix.

Was the video version/remix of the song ever officially released on cd? I've always liked that section of the video during "M-I-K-E...". I'll pay for it if it's available, otherwise if anyone took the time to record it from the dvd as an mp3, care to share? Hmm or maybe it's on the HUB...?

I'm really hoping that since the Boys in their email letter seemed to enjoy the fact that they got to remaster the tracks (or amp the bass), that we'll start to see some remasters of the older albums.

I wasn't sure about getting SGH until I read about the video for That's It That's All and the alternate angles for the new videos... sure enough we were quite entertained by the Ch Check it Out footage (which Documad just mentioned in another thread)... Mike D at the water cooler, Yauch with the basketball, the little satisfied look of Adrock's German tourist after he gets his photo :p We were crackin up over here.

For fun we gave the CD a spin over the weekend and it does sound nice. I noticed it especially on Brass Monkey, but it all sounded good.

For something they didn't want to do, quality release (y)

(Not that I ever expected anything less.)

i haven't read the whole thread but another way to get past the copy protection for the dvd is to maybe rip it to the hard drive with dvd-shrink then watch it from the hard drive.

i had similar problems with the new nin dual cd/dvd. i could play the dvd part just fine on my pc but the cd part gave me trouble. all i did was try a few different audio players and rippers and eventually i found one that work.
