yeah, I need to got me one of them.
My mom used to make the best oatmeal in those. I think we're so used to quick cooking oatmeal these days, most people don't realise how good a really slowly cooked oatmeal is. She'd put all the stuff in the night before, and then there it was in the morning, all ready. Really nice on a cold winter morning.

I don't know that there's any recope per se, you just have to make sure you get the right kind of oats. I think the brand my mom used to get was called McCann's Irish Porridge Oats, but I'm not sure. Basically what you are olooking for is the rougher, less processed (i.e., not 'rolled') oats. They take much longer to cook this way, which is why they bacame less popular, but they are much much heartier, nuttier tasting and have a more complex texture - they end up being a bit 'chewier' and less sort of sludgy, if that makes sense. I imagine being less processed they're probably better for you in some way - more fiber, higher nutrient content? - but I am not certain so don't take my word as gospel on that.
What I remember mom doing is basically putting the oats and the required amount of water all into the crock pot, I think maybe she even used half water half apple juice for extra flavour sometimes, added a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg and a pinch of salt as well, and then just let it slow cook in the crock pot overnight. Served in the morning with a dollop of maple syrup and a splash of milk. Yum. Having a happy childhood memory moment now I am.

We put a roast in with some baby carrots, potatoes, corn, tomatoes and a bottle of beer. After work its perfect. The roast just falls apart.

OK so I am reviving this thread because a) I finally got around to getting a slow cooker and b) made some oatmeal last night/this morning and I am eating it right now and it is SO GOOD I could almost die.

I've been getting into oatmeal recently, sounds like I need to get a crockpot (it's the same thing as a slow cooker right?)

I'm tellin you, man. Try the real stuff, with the steel cut oats (you might also find them called Irish oats or oat groats) sometime and you won't believe the difference.

Ive never tried cookin the oatmeal with applejuice
thats a crazy good idea
I like mixing in peanut or almond butter into hot oatmeal and letting it melt
amazing
I recently bought some Rotel (the canned stuff with chopped green chiles and tomatoes in their own juices) and a Tri-tip and crockpotted it for the day. The meet got a bit spicy and fell apart, which I then used for shredded beef tacos. No grumpies (fat) either.

I'm resurrecting this thread to bring up some good ol' slow cooker recipes. Truly... what a great invention. Here's something I recently made that is AWESOME. I call Chicken and Apples CrockPot Delight... 'cause it sounds stupid.
Ingredients
6 boneless, skinless chicken breast
3 Granny Smith (or other tart) apples - cored and sliced
1 Onion - chopped
3 cloves garlic - minced
6 oz. frozen Orange Juice Concentrate -Thawed
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp dried marjoram leaves
1 Tbsp Corn Starch
Directions
1. Line the bottom of your slow cooker with the onions and garlic. Easy enough for a first step, eh?
2. In a small bowl combine the OJ concentrate, marjoram, and nutmeg. Make sure it's thoroughly combined.
3. Dip each chicken breast into the OJ mix to coat and place on top of the onions. Whatever is left of the OJ mix at the end - pour over the stuff inside your slow cooker.
4. Cook on low for a minimum of 6 hours. In the last 50 to 60 minutes - toss in your apple slices so they get nice and tender.
5. Remove everything in the slow cooker and set aside. Pour the juice inside in a small saucepan and add the cornstarch along with 3 Tbsp water.
6. Over medium-high heat cook for about 15 minutes until it gets nice and thick. Like, well, a sauce 'cause that's what it is... Stir with a wire whisk pretty frequently. Once it's done, pour it over your chicken/apples/onions.
7. Enjoy the heck out of it. 'Cause it's damn good.

i made this recipe in a magazine yesterday and it was god damn fucking tasty. i liked it so much i will type, yes type, it out for you (goddammittohell it's not online)
one-pan spanish fish stew
serves four, prep 10 mins. LOW FAT! 40 minutes cooking! WOOH!
handful parsley (bleh)
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
zest and juice of 1 lemon
1 medium onion, finely sliced
500g/1lb 2oz floury potatoes, cut into small chunks, no larger than 2cm cubes
1 tsp paprika
pinch cayenne pepper
400g can chopped tomatoes
1 fish stock cube
200g/80x raw peeled king prawns
half a 410g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
500g/1lb 2oz skinless fish fillets, cut into large chunks
1. in a small bowl, mix the parsley with half the garlic and lemon zest, then set aside. heat 2 tbsp oil in a large saute pan. throw (throw!) in the onion and potatoes, cover the pan, then sweat everything for about 5 mins until the onion has softened. add the remaining oil, garlic and spices, then cook for 2 mins more.
2. pour over the lemon juice and sizzle. add the tomatoes, half a can of water and crumble in the stock. season with salt n pepper then cover the pan. simmer everything for 15-20 mins until the potatoes are just cooked.
3. stir through the prawns and chickpeas, then nestle (nestle!) the fish chunks into the stew. reduce the heat and re-cover the pan, then cook for about 8 mins, stirring very gently once or twice. when the fish is just cooked through, remove from the heat, scatter with the parsley mix, then bring the dish over to the table with the bottle of olice oil for drizzling over and some crusty bread, if you want (I DO WANT!)
seriously, it is THE SHIT. serve it in a bowl with crusty bread and BAM! i didn't have any tinned tomatoes so i used tomato soup instead, and frozen fish fillets too, and it was mmmmm devine. normally the words "fish" and "stew" together would make me go yeuch but not this. NOMNOMNOM.
edit: you don't really need a crock pot for this, but hey.

Inspired by a special on TLC about a chili cook off competition - I decided if a lot of those weird idiots could make a chili recipe, then I certainly could make my own. It's pretty basic - but it came out really awesome. Sometimes you don't need a whole lot of ingredients to make a great dish!
Ingredients
4 cups (32 oz.) tomato sauce
1 medium onion (I prefer red) - diced
3 cloves garlic - minced
1 (or 2) small/medium bell pepper(s) - green or red are my favorites - chopped
1 jalapeņo pepper - chopped
1 serrano pepper - minced (and seeded if you don't like the heat... I left mine in)
1 can (15 oz.) kidney beans, or black beans, or chili beans - drained
1 lb. beef for stew
0.5 lb. ground chuck
1 Tbsp chili powder
2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp chipotle pepper
Salt and pepper
Directions
1. Toss the beef in a skillet/pan. Season with salt and pepper then brown it ever so slightly. Drain all excess fat and set aside.
2. Line the bottom of your slow cooker with the onions, garlic, and bell pepper. Make sure to start with the onion, dudes.
3. That beef you just set aside? Put all that on top of the onions, garlic, and bell pepper.
4. Now comes the time to add your heat. Grab those other peppers you've chopped up and toss them in - seeds and all.
5. Add your can of beans.
6. Top off with your tomato sauce. I save this for last because that way you can cover EVERYTHING. If necessary you can also add a little bit of extra water - maybe up to a cup.
7. Some people fear putting seasoning in their slow cooker because spices can sometimes form a bitter taste when cooked for extended periods. Not to worry with those we have here. Toss 'em in.
8. Put that sucker on for at least 8 hours and go do something productive. When you come home you'll have some piping hot, kick-ass chili for dinner.
