I've spent a substantial portion of my evening contemplating this matter, and after careful consideration, I'm gonna have to go with Since We Last Spoke. Dead Ringer is a hell of an album and it definitely knocks my fucking socks off, but Since We Last Spoke is a better display of Rjd2's genius in my opinion. I can hear more of a pattern or formula in most of the tracks on Dead Ringer, almost as if they might be better with some form of vocals over them. The instrumentals on Since We Last Spoke are more organic and free flowing and the vocal samples he chose for that album make me want to take all my clothes off and get freaky.

If you've never heard either of these albums, I pity you.

I've not yet heard Since We Last Spoke (I'll be getting it soon though), but I must say, Deadringer is amazing.

It's like Moby's Play and Shadow's Endtroducing mixed together, with all kinds of extra stuff added in.

Sorry, I understand, but the way he sampled the old soul music was remisicent of Play.

Better than Play, but reminiscant of it.

the vocal cuts on deadringer i could do without.
they are weak.
i don't really mind ramble john krohn's singing though.

I dunno, June is pretty nice, even though Copy is a suspect MC.

It works.

Blueprints cut is good, but maybe doesn't fit with the album.

But the Jakki cut is trash. He's a horrible MC as far as I'm concerned.

And holy fucking shit, the horn sample used in Take the Picture Off is being used on an NBA commercial as I type this.

Fuckign weirdest thing ever. I start to type this and I'm going "What the fuck?".

Awesome.

if you replace the vocal cuts of Deadringer with the instrumental versions on The Horror EP, then Deadringer is by FAAAAAAR the superior LP.

Deadringer is mostly samples from old funk loops, while Since We Last Spoke has kind of this whole other feel to it mixed with the funk loops. Its not necessarily a bad thing but its almost like its sporadic for the sole purpose of being sporadic. I mean, the "Intro" is in the middle of the album and Through The Walls sounds like Steve Perry ghost wrote (omg lol) it. 1976, while I like it, sounds like the backdrop to a group of Ecuadorians stealing a truck full of oranges in some shitty subtitled movie. In the sense of a better RJ album that actually serves that purpose of being completely random, "In Rare Form" is the best. Actually, that is the best thing hes released now that i think about it.
