I'm presenting a speech about the Origins of Hip Hop so I was brushing up on my Old School History when in two places (I think wikipedia and some site like oldschool.net or something) it said that Beastie Boys are not considered old school hip hop.
I thought hmm maybe it's because they lasted for so long.. but no Run-DMC is considered old school. Then I thought hmm maybe it's because they did some instrumental songs and maybe it's not the best analogy but again Run-DMC came into mind (Walk This Way)
The only other thing I can think of is because Liscenced to Ill came out in 1987. Is that why?
Yeah, so I'm really wondering. Maybe someone knows the answer?
Thanks in advance :)

Most people would consider them old school now I suppose, but strictly speaking I think the term old school was first used for hip-hop before '83, or before Run-DMC (BRUNDMC). The first school was original school, with flash and the rest of the lads. Run-DMC onwards were then termed 'new-school', or middle-school. I think. Depends on what era you're reflecting from.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, because they came out a little later but on that list thing on one of the sites that didn't mention the Beastie Boys, Run-DMC was mentioned so that's why I wasn't too sure.

oh boy, i wonder what that idiot said. I'm not self-centered enough to think that he responded directly to my thread but he is an idiot so you never know but i'm not curious enough about what he said to take him of my ignore list. his words are worthless anyway.
p.s. - pre-school was a joke. pre-school he-he, ha-ha.

to the kids of today, it seems like they're old-school because we weren't around back then i guess, so to us it's old school, but by true definition it's not
