View Full Version : Do you think that the fact that we know we're all likely to die at around 80 or 90...

.....if we're lucky to make it that far, is the principal reason why people are typically so greedy, selfish, indulgent, materialistic and constantly trying to squeeze every ounce of entertainment value out of even the most inane things in life? Is that the excuse? If we knew we'd live to be, say, a thousand years old, would we still live the way we do? Would we? Huh?

I was thinking about this today...the different kinds of people. I've really been seeing this in my new waitress job especially, and I don't mean with the customers - with staff. It's so interesting to see the people who take short cuts, aren't hard workers, are dishonest, not nice to guests, etc. And I just think, what the fuck? So you can get out of here an extra 20 minutes early? It never makes sense to me. I've always felt that by being the best person I can (i know how cheesy that sounds, stfu), I'll get rewarded in the end. And it's worked so far.
except for those old ladies I molested - I was having an off day.

I think regardless of how long people live they'd still be 'greedy, selfish indulgent, materialistic and [try] to squeeze every ounce of entertainment value out of even the most inane things in life.' Especially if the media still existed in the form it does today. Mainly because I believe those charactistics are inate in humans because of their inherent 'will to power'.
I have however been called a cynic on more than one occasion.

I think the older I get, the more considerate and kinder I get. And the sad thing is that it's not really because I want to or really care to be nice...it's because I've learned what goes around comes around. Really. And it sucks when it's your turn. Then, you can appreciate better what others are going through and you become more understanding.

Yeah, I think the number of hours in a day--I'm glad you brought that up, Brabs--is an equally prevailing factor in our wanting to indulge so much. If we had like 30 hours in a day, we'd be less inclined to try to squeeze so much into a day/night. We'd pace ourselves more; maybe not try to get drunk so quickly. Things of that nature. You know.

I used to be materialistic and all those things. I am loads happier without new stuff than I was with new stuff. Because I'm doing what I want to. The kinder I am the happier I feel. Maybe that is just me maturing but I see some peoples life and they think they have the best jetting off three times a year and staying 7 star hotels and being greedy etc and I thank that I don't have that life cus it doesn't entertain me at all. The thought once did, but it's my idea of hell now.
Some people see life in different ways to the way I would. You could argue the earth is here to be reaped from and collect as much money as possible to increase their familys name value.

^ i disagree. i'd get bored, but i would like to live say...1000 years. it's just that watching my friends and family die would be pretty tough but seeing the future would make it all better.

Okay, but I wasn't referring to immortality, just an increased life expectancy. You can still get shot/stabbed and die, though.

I heard the early 80's generation is expected to live to at least 100.
Weird.
But my grandma is 86 right now, so my genes already have longevity. If I couple that longevity with better medicine, maybe I can make it to 120! Not like I want to, I'd rather die before my husband.

Bad things always seem to happen to good people who dont deserve it. I get so tired of hearing about real life occurences that turn into tragedy for innocent individuals.

And because the guy I'm dating agreed that he'd rather die later. I don't think I could handle him passing first, I'd be too sad. He's more manly and could deal with me passing better. But if he found another woman, lord knows I'd haunt them and knock shit off the shelves if they were doin' it.

if we lived for 1000 years, that would just be 920 more years of anxiety

or 920 more years to finish school. actually then i could just sorta pace myself and take one course per semester instead of worrying so much.
