I posted about this quite a few times, a long time ago.

It's never right to use gay meaning bad in my world. It's homophobic and it makes you sound like a 13 year old. When some people do it here, it's clearly serious and that makes me think a little less of them. When other people do it here, I think they're making fun of the guys who do it seriously, but maybe I'm wrong.

If an adult talked like that in my "real world," he/she would be shunned and/or fired.

i say fag in jest a lot (i'd never say it knowingly to someone who was actually gay, certainly not as a derogatory word against them) just because i think it's a funny word, and a stupid insult (i never use it on someone i actually have something against, since i don't think it's an actual insult), i use it very lightly, almost satirically.

but you're probably right, in 50 years, i'll probably look back and say "i wish i didn't say 'fag' so much". really, is it that much different from saying "nigger", even if i don't mean it in a derogatory/racial way? we only get away with it because like someone else said, it's socially acceptable for some reason.

oh, wait a minute though. i think there's a difference between robmoney calling someone a nigger and, say, me calling anyone a fag; i don't mean it. when robmoney called whoever he called a nigger, he appears to have meant it in a racist way. when i say fag, i don't mean it in a homophobic or even insulting way; if i want to insult someone, i use a word that's actually insulting.

Anyways, I tend to agree with bob, the difference between calling someone a nigger and calling someone a fag is usually the context. When people use the word nigger in a degoratory sense it is usually directed at someone [ethnic] of african decent. Obviously the connatations are meant to be belittling and demeaning. If someone was to call a gay person a fag or simply gay, one would assume they mean it with the same intent.
However calling a white person a nigger isn't usually viewed as an insult, at least to my knowledge, because obviously they don't have the traits (skin colour) that the original term was based around. Calling someone that isn't gay a fag creates the same comedic connotation, in my opinion. If you look at similar general insults they follow the same trend essentially. Calling someone a 'stinking hippy' or a 'pleb' or 'white trash' isn't actually insulting unless you know that they really are and mean it to be an insult.

In saying all that , it doesn't really make it right and in some cases perpetuates stereotypes and justifys prejudice to those that actually use words like nigger and gay with ill intent. meh

If I say somethings gay, and mean it to be a gay=lame sense, I have been pulled up by gay friends who say 'and what's wrong with that?' they're just playing though, they know its just a joke when I say it. Some people, however, can say words and their tone and inflection plus body language can make it really obvious they mean it in a hurtful manner, in those cases I doubt they'd see the funny side in it, and quite frankly, neither do I.

I don't think it's homophobic. I think it's just become a part of the American vocabulary and changed its meaning overtime. Like the word "terrific" originally meant "terrifying in nature" but then became "great or emense proportions" and somehow just now means "great, fantastic." When someone says "That's terrific news" it doesn't have the meaning it would have before.

Though the word "gay" isn't exactly the same, I think it's somewhat alike. I do use the word out of habit, to mean "That's so stupid." I don't mean to, it's just become a part of me because I grew up watching TV shows that use the term and I've just grown accustomed to it. I try to cut back, but it's a habit. I'd probably try harder if it wasn't generally accepted in society, even by my gay friends. My best friend is gay, and he and I always say "That's gay" or "Don't be gay" or in other contexts, with other homosexuals. They don't mind it at all, they themselves use it all the time, because they realize that the word has kinda morphed over the years.

Anyways, I don't think it's the same as racist words, but it should probably be used less regardless.

I don't think it matters one little bit if some of you have gay friends who don't mind you saying "gay" meaning "bad." My homosexual friends happen to think it's wrong. One of my lesbian friends thinks it's fine, on the other hand, to say "gay" when refering to female-like traits in men. But I'm not taking a poll.

I think that "gay" meaning "bad" is wrong for my own reasons. In my real life, I think that I might find one person who would debate me on this--the rest would think I'd lost my mind to even think it's an issue. Again, I'm very lucky in where I live and work. :)

Yeah Laver, this came up back then. I've always taken goofy polls among my various groups of friends, but I've done it more since then. It's so not an issue where I live and work so people are puzzled when I bring it up. :p

My friends' high school boys say "gay" or "fag" to mean bad in a joking way. They don't mean anything by it and they say it like a 2nd grader would say poopyhead. But those same words are appalling to my generation. So everyone can take if for what it's worth. I wouldn't say "fuck" or "piss" in front of my grandma.
