Shoot yourself in the foot; use the F-word in a DVD title

Got an e-mail from the Beastie Boys' publicity firm in New York. The old-school rappers have put together a DVD largely shot by 50 audience members who were handed camcorders at a October 2004 concert at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Neat idea. The first word of the DVD's title, set for a spring 2006 release, is "Awesome." The rest of the title we cannot print, however, because it contains the F-word.

The Beastie Boys don't really have to worry about money, I imagine, but that one little rebellious tactic is sure to keep many stores from carrying the title and many newspapers from writing about it.

Similarly, there's a local band whose name starts with "Jesus" and also includes the aforementioned F-word. I appreciate the in-your-face sentiment guys, but you're really handicapping yourselves with that name.

The alternative press might embrace it -- and I support their policy to do so -- but unfortunately, many publications, including this one, don't print curse words. You're limiting yourselves in how far you can go.

I mean, how can they show your video on MTV?

If I've ever had ONE beef with the Beastie Boys, it's this high profile 'top 40' arena they dabble in. I know, I know, it sure pays them billz. But MTV and Top 40 is for the Mariah Carey and Limp Bizkit's of the world anymore. It's certainly no place for 3 nice talented sophisticated gentlemen like our precious Beastie Boys. I usually don't shy away from saying fuck. I don't know for sure why I don't like the title. These are some possible reasons: I want Beastie Boys to reach a large audience so lots of people will be able to take part in the fun, but this title limits the exposure. Also it seems to me by saying fuck in the title that's trying too hard to be "outrageous." Maybe there's just some puritanical thing deep within me that I can't get rid of. But what can I do about that?

So really I don't like it.

I will definitely buy it however. :p
