Let's take turns finding the racism. One person describe something you've seen or experienced out there in the world, and the next few people can help you figure out if you or the party in question are guilty of racism. I'll just say right now that whatever it was, we can find the hate.

First issue is The Lord of The Rings trilogy as executed by Peter Jackson.

A very racist one. Apart from the fact that her character is known for riding around with a couple of hicks in an orange car with no doors, which is about as hillbilly as you can get, the car also happens to have a giant confederate flag painted on its roof. Catherine Bach, the actress who played Daisy Duke on the original Dukes of Hazzard series, was half Mexican. Jessica Simpson of course is pure white bread. She whitened up the role and tarnished it by being more slutty. She also stole and tarnished the Nancy Sinatra hit single "These boots were made for walking" and as you know, Sinatra was Italian. So Jessica Simpson, the stupid little white Texas broad, steals from the minorities and profits from them.

Stephen Hawking will be in town (lecturing? Pre-recorded lecture?). This reminded me that a pretty good-looking lady (if I recall correctly) married him a few years back.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but think: why? Why would a woman marry this guy? I love people's brains and all that, too, but.... who would sign on to be this guy's caretaker, and what sort of pleasure could she ever get from him? Presumably, there's no sex; they'[ll never go for a sudden romp in the park; he'll never help out with the gardening, etc. etc. I just don't get it.

Yes, I can be an ass, but I just can't fathom anyone but God loving this guy that unselfishly.

Mick Jagger shared a couple of his own observations about women of various races on the Stones song Some Girls:

French girls they want Cartier, Italian girls want cars
American girls want everything in the world you can possibly imagine

English girls they're so prissy, I can't stand them on the telephone
Sometimes I take the receiver off the hook, I don't want them to ever call at all

White girls they're pretty funny, sometimes they drive me mad
Black girls just wanna get fucked all night, I just don't have that much jam

Chinese girls are so gentle, they're really such a tease
You never know quite what they're cookin', inside those silky sleeves

But seriously, some white girls aren't really that funny. I mean, c'mon. That offends me.

How do they try to own it?

Can some people own it more than others? Is there a successive line of racist ownership that corrolates with skin tone? Or is it more connected to nationality? Or is it heavily dependent on what generation you are in a country? In what order of ownership (of racism) would you list; a pakistani american, a tunisian french citizen, an african american, an italian american and a puerto rican american fall into?

it's never happened to me, but i hear cashiers get it a lot. if a black/latino/asian/martian customer is having a problem with a white cashier, it's instantly "YOU PREJ'DICED".

if someone did that to me, i'd probably kick them out of the store. that's fucked up. save the racism card for when there's actually racism going on. it's like crying wolf, or something, i dunno. it cheapens the accusation if you use it willy-nilly, which is bad, because racism is actually a problem

My kid's dad was born in another country and you can tell by his name, by looking at him, by talking to him/his family. His family came here when he was 12 or 13, I think, and they settled in NYC. From everything he's said and stuff that I observed, he and they have only ever benefitted from their race. Not that they got free rides in school--they worked hard--but there were categories of opportunities that were available to them that weren't available to others. Even though it's obvious that they're not from the U.S., they never had problems either casually (on the streets) or in terms of opportunity.

In terms of discrimination, it could be that class trumps race or at least diminishes its effect. They're obviously from upper-middle-class standing and have been well educated, have successful careers, are well esteemed in their fields. That could influence the opportunities they've had, but I doubt that it would deeply affect the casual, racial sorts of discriminations that I hear about from other people. I wonder what the difference was/is.

monkey
06-22-2006, 10:41 AM
i honestly believe the difference comes in both class (money) and education. when i go somewhere where im lauded for my educational achievements, it's always "look at that hard-working, smart, immigrant girl." when im wearing jeans and a tshirt, walking around the streets of the suburbs i live in, or going to get a simple summer job, one where education isn't a priority, it's "there's another brown person." perhaps it is because im not in nyc proper, but in a predominantly white area, perhaps it is because i may not go around flaunting my education, but walking around just like any other kid. it's just that my skin color sticks out. i may not look it when i post pictures, but it's plainly obvious to a person looking at me face-to-face.

the truth is, it's not rampant. it's not an everyday occurence. but it's hurtful, it's terrible, it's demeaning, and i wish it never happened. not just because of me, because im sure i can succeed beyond it. but there might be a person without the ability to have the educational chances i have had, and they could be just as smart, but their skin color might prevent them from having better opportunities.

Qdrop

i'll go out on a limb and say the differance is probably that they may have experiance some form of name calling, discrimination, alientation, etc based on thier race/ethnicity BUT realized this it was nowhere in the same league as those that have truly experianced disgusting abuse or overt discriminiation in todays age, or historically.
they rightly see it as disrespectful to use that word lightly in the face of those that have historically been killed, abused, or segragated in the most vile of actions.
the word "racism" carries with it some of history's worst tragedies, even as recent as the sixties..and TODAY in America (James Bird)....
to say one has been a victim of racism means that person has seen "hell" in thier lifetime....and they are deserving of our remorse and support.

but some in our society look to latch on to that "pity line" by claiming that they, too, have experienced racism, when the experiance they claim pales by ANY comparison to past acts of horrendous discrimination.
a classless act.

shit, when i lived in the city as a child, i got picked on by some black kids who said "white kids like you walk funny"...
but i'll be god damned if i would ever have the fuckin balls to say i experienced "racism"... when just 2 years ago, a black man was dragged from a pick up truck by his neck till his head ripped off....just because he was black.
no fuckin way.

thinking you got looked at "funny" because your skin is olive colored, compared to alibaster white is not racism.

being told to "get your n*gger ass out of my store", being beaten because of your skin color, or being told that "we would never hire a sp*c like you." is racism.

You didn't answer my question. You said white people try to "own" racism and I wondered what you meant by that and who you thought had the rights to "own" racism - whatever that means. And if you put people on a continuum or rightful ownership to racism. Like, who gets to own the most? African Americans? Asian Americans? Where does an upper middle class Chilean American girl fit into it?

You get used to it, I mean people don't realize that its hard for a black man in the mostly black ghetto (poverty, worrying about your own brotha killing you, etc.) and the suburbs (white kids unaware of history, being looked upon with negative looks and hearing behind your back and face "I didnt think he was that smart") type of junk. Thne you come on here and see people making fun of it and then trying to speak about what they trully could NEVER know is an annoyance.

Let me tell you people a story:

I was no more then 10 years old, me and my father went to Mississppi to vist my great grandma (since we had just flown back to our first home, the ghetto Baton Rouge,La to vist family) so we are driving in the woods, dirt roads the whole nine yards and junk, trailers all on top of the hills. So we have the windows down and all of a sudden I hear a whistle....I look up and I see this obsese hairy white guy in one those kiddie pools yo, I think naked but Im not sure take his shotgun and point up....all I see is a damn confedreate flag flying.....almost as a statment that "nigger you in the wrong area"......I have never let my race get in my way, but sometimes there is only so much YOU can do......for others (jobs, school) can control your destiny. I know I am smarter then the sterotype, but people (unaware or not) still tend to show disrespect and try to one up you...for whatever reason they do. I see it on here and off here...then they try and label you all sorts of things too (confertational, outspoken, etc.), but you know what? If I didnt speak my mind I'd just be another nigga in their minds, least when I open my mouth I can kill some of that at least with the people that can see what I have round them.

I would guess that this is absolutely right. I think when they decided to come here, they fought off scenarios of horrible abuse and discrimination. So maybe to them, some name-calling was just not an issue.

Exactly.

And my point, in caase I didn't make it well, is that a lot of kids get opportunities BECAUSE of their race. When I was a little kid, kids in other racial groups were either ignored or looked-down upon; now, though, in some circles, in some situations, kids who don't mesh with the diversity center's goals aren't even considered. If a college wants a kid with brown or yellow skin, they go after those kids even though often, those kids would in no way qualify for that opportunity otherwise.

Wasn't there a lawsuit about this a few years ago? Some caucasian/white kids sued some university for unfair admission practices?

Also, some of these kids [who are admitted on the grounds of their race] are destined to fail. Some of these colleges are so eager to act on their diversity plans that they'll invite kids who would clearly not survive the associated academic rigors. It would be interesting to compare the diversity stats for incoming freshman against returning juniors.

How can you make a serious comment about "white people" while at the same time complain about people who treat you like dirt for your skin? And are you saying that there are grades of hate and that certian people, certain skin colors, have it worse than others? How can you put a value scale on something like that?

My dad's racist. Not necessarily in a hateful way, but he definitely discriminates against certain people, if not all people. His parents were from India. He was raised in the Philippines. Soon after moving to Canada, he married my mom, who is Filipino. But my dad doesn't really speak too highly of Filipino people, despite having many friends who are Filipino. And a wife who is. And two sons that are half. I don't know.

I never really realized how out of control his prejudices were until I got a little older. I can remember being as young as 6 years old, driving in the car with him, hearing him make all kinds of racist remarks that would sort of offend me, even as a child. I grew up in a very racially diverse community. I had friends of all sorts of different ethinicities. And the school I went to really encouraged the idea of appreciating the various cultures and ethnic backgrounds. So my respect for other races and cultures was more or less instilled in me by everyone other than my dad. That sounds pretty After School Special-ish, but it's true.

yeah, there were a few, i learned about them in my african american politics class, they went to the supreme court, i believe. i do not remember the outcome. i think the policies were upheld (must have been, because schools are still doing it). the only one i remember was some girl who had an LSAT of 160 and a GPA of 3.5 sued because she didn't get into the U of michigan law school (one of the best in the country). that seems a little prissy. i got a 163 and a 3.3 and got rejected from Boston College, you don't see me suing.

anyway schools are still doing it, DEFINITELY law schools. their pamphlets proudly brag about the number of minorities admitted, they make a big to-do about how you should mention how your status has affected you in your essay if you're a minority, etc. i can understand it though, even with all that, minorities are way under-represented in terms of the racial composition of the law school classes.
