Me and mr.p have been having a look at several baby-naming sites for ideas, and can't seem to find many girl's names we like. If the baby's a boy, we're sorted, and heaven knows we've got time yet, but what the hell, I'm open to ideas. So I'm throwing this out there.
A few criteria to bear in mind:
- It can't end in an "-n" sound, as the first letter of the surname is N.
- No hippie dippie names like Serenity or Beanbag or Cornucopia or any of that crap.
- No stripper names.
- No ordinary names with dumb-ass spellings, like Stefini or Nikkole or other such pathetic attempts at 'originality'

I like Vanessa, but mr.p said when he hears that name he always thinks of Vanessa Williams, and those nekkid pics of her that turned up and all and it gets him kind of excited. Which is not a bad thing, except it's kind of creepy to then give your daughter that name, you know?

Sarah's a little too Old Testament for my taste. Plus, my cousin's already got a Sarah.
Veronica is not bad, except that there is this really annoying woman in my husband's office with that name and I think she's kind of ruined it for him.
Paulina is nice - except my last serious boyfriend before mr.p was a 'Paul', and I think that that might stir up some issues...
Dana is OK, we'll put it on the "hmm, don't hate it" list.
Claire is a maybe - mr.p's grandmother was 'Clara' so maybe it's similar enough to please his side of the family.
Elizabeth is my middle name, my grandmother's name, my cousin'd name...I think maybe we'll give that one a miss. It's not a bad name, but also it would make people think I named her for the Queen or something.

Holy crap, that's what Wayne did to get his Gmail account about a year ago. He told the guy he'd give him the right to name his cat. He didn't have a cat though. So he got a free account and the name "Mr. Jingles" went to waste.

We were joking around about this awhile ago, trying to come up with names that would sound right in English, Dutch, and Italian (and Cheyenne although it's almost not possible). We came up with Madeleine and Annawake. We had some other strong possibilities, if I can remember them: Grace (which would be Graciella (sp?) in Italian--nice), Mathilda, and Angelina (my middle name).
But Celeste is a nice name too ya know. ;)

I once met a Rhiannon. She was teased about her parents being Stevie Nicks' fans every time she met a new person.

how about Catherine or Caroline. Can't go wrong with those I guess.
We called ours Emlyn (with Astrid and Caroline as middle names) but of course that has the dreaded "n" at the end. Oh...and don't call her that if you ever plan to take up residency in Wales because over there it's a boy's name as well.

11-14-2005, 03:28 AM
We like the name Catherine. It's actually my best friend's name, so that would be OK. The only problem is, it's my dad's wife's name, except she spells it with a K. So if we spell it either of those ways, someone will get annoyed. (Not least my mother, who will take naming my child after her ex-husband's next wife a bit poorly, I should think.) Plus there's the 'ends with an n-sound' thing.
Since mr.p's surname is very German, we've considered using a more European-ish Katarina, but we're not 100% convinced on that either.

Yeah, Emily's definitely out. Apparently been number 1 every year since 1996. Which means there's an absolute plague of miniature Emily's around.
'Willow' doesn't surprise me - in this pregnancy forum I've been looking in on lately, there's one woman who's just had her baby and named it Coriander. And another whose planning to name her baby Ferrari-Jade

Yeah, the vowel names are very popular now. My friends are having Olivias, Emmas, Ellas, Annas and Adriannes (various spellings). Irish names are also very hot here, but then Irish names have always been hot here.
Willow was of course the witch on Buffy. I also know a grown up Willow and she's very Willow-y. It would be an unfortunate name for a frumpy girl.
Peachy, if her name ends in an "n" sound, she'll be including her middle initial in her professional signature, so give her a good middle initial. My parents let my sibilings name me but they weren't completely asleep at the wheel and they gave me a good middle initial.

Yeah, good luck with that.
Your effeminate little boy name reminds me of this anecdote I shared with the board a little while ago about a boy named Stephany. I met him at a mutual friend's birthday get-together. We all went out to some upscale-ish restaurant downtown. He was this tall blonde guy with a goofy face, wearing a t-shirt with a picture of a duck on it. When he went to introduce himself along with his sweaty handshake, I thought he may have been playing around. But no, he was for real. He ordered a glass of milk with his dinner. Followed by another.

so pretty, classy and distinguished.
what's in a name? it's safe to say, our appreciation for particular names comes from interaction with people that hold those names. one bad seed can ruin the whole lot. certain names just reek of money and status.
we are all essentially representatives of our names. i dislike my name(s) so much, i'm often at a loss for words when someone asks me. sometimes, i'll offer up my preferred default alias and leave it at that.
these days, i'm simply -- "bobby d from up the street". what's interesting, is people tend to remember it. it's like a name, with a built in jingle or slogan.
a name is what you (as an idividual) make it. good luck with selecting the most perfect one, ms. peachy. (y)

Since you blew off my other suggestions, how do you feel about Adria? It's Tom Petty's daughter's name. Do you like Tom Petty? I think he's okay.

And for the record, if you're named Cassie, I don't really know you.

I appreciate Tom Petty more over time. He's avoided being completely embarrassing in middle age and his band is still tight.
There are a lot of Isobel's now and you call them "Belle" like in Beauty and the Beast.

You may find this shocking, but a rather large percentage of German girl's name sound suspiciously like an old man clearing his throat.
So you think I really want a kid named "Schmetterling"?

My best friend is very, very German and so is her whole family. My sister also married one. I've heard some perfectly horrible first names for girls. :p
I was also a big fan of The Sound of Music, so how about Liesl? :)

i've never heard of a girl called schmetterling, butterfly is much prettier anyway. but you're right, though. german names can sound horrible... but not just german ones, there are "horrible" italian, english, french etc. names as well.

this probably won't go with the german last name, but I really like Mackenzie for a girl...
my sisters friend had Mackenzie as her last name, but took her husbands name when she got married, so she named her first daughter that. I like it...
I kinda like the last name as the first name thing...maybe I'll name any future daughter Callaghan.

Nothing against ghetto folk; these particular people are fucking losers.
