hola all my fellow geek-oids!
[please, anyone who just wants to come on here to say "yah but dude the psp is so much better" - another time, MMMkay?]
is anyone else as excited as myself about the nintendo ds wi-fi launch?
this has to be a trigger for me to get broadband. i can't sit in my local pub [one of the hotspots in glasgow] playing my ds and drinking cider! wait, maybe that's not such a bad idea...
i wonder if you could just search for someone else's wireless connection, if you know what i mean, and ride on that? you know how yr laptop just sometimes catches a random wireless connection in your area? techno kids, know anything about this?
if anyone is up for this isht we should swap codes like little private club members. just joshing. but not about the code swapping. what's the code called again? this unique number you can give to people so they can be on your ds friends list. i'm up for that. i'm a ds gaming whore. i'm anyone's best friend yo.
i'm luigi in mario kart all the way. gonna red shell YOUR ASSES, BITCHES!

Most connections 'should' be secure and you shouldn't be able to pick up a connection.
However, you'd be surprised how many don't secure their connection and you could hitch a ride off it.
So it'd be hit and miss.

can you not connect if you have dial-up? i have a dial-up internet connection at home and it detects wireless shit. so why can't i play like that? hmph.

exactly. Not a bad idea, at all.
If I could afford it, I would get a DS. But I can't. The end.
I'm really excited about the MarioKart coming out (tomorrow right?). Its supposedly is going to have a MarioKart 64 kind of feel but bringing back some coarses from the original...so that gave me a boner.
Makes me glad that my woman has the DS because I won't have to go out and get one myself.
On another note....we ARE those geeks that go to our favorite pub and bust out the PSP whilst drinking a pint or two. Some of the bartenders used to laugh at us, but now they are the ones who ask if they can get in on a hole while we are playing hot shots, so we end up passing it around. Aaaaannnnd they got a wireless connection there we can tap into if need be.

c, you should just totally go for it and buy it. aren't they like uber-cheap now anyhoo, especially in ye olde states of america? ah, maybe you can get one for christmas from speshul friends!
rock, they have all the courses from the n64 and gamecube double dash games, plus 16 new courses! they are apparently more interactive and challenging. loves it. i think you should give me your friend code. yup. it's a challenge. bring it on!
once i figure it all out...its on.

I'm very excited about the Wi-Fi, myself. Animal Crossing: Wild World is going to be killer...
And serving people on Metroid Prime Hunters? Oh yes...

The PSP? I bought one, sorely disappointed. It's been out since March, and only has a handful of quality games...
Makes for a nice MP3 player though...

i'm not really into the psp type of games. shooting and fighting and erm, no thanks. i like fighting as in ZELDA fighting (everyone knows i'm a zelda freak, right?) but not metal gear solid esque type fighting, knowhattamean? i like nintendo's games for their fun-ness - i like rpgs, puzzles and cute little side quests. yup. the only game i would play on the psp would probably be gta (yeah i know that involves muchos killing too but i'd just like doing all the little missions). so sony aint getting any of this hard earned cash, nah!
i really liked another code on the ds, anyone played that? i think there's great potential for these sort of adventure games.. i hear about one that is coming out about a detective story. loves it. i'm there.

Actually, most connections should be broadcasting the SSID etc. They SHOULD be encrypted, however. Depending on who configured them, guessing the encryption key could be farcical or difficult, depending on the encryption system.
The problem with wifiing from a Pub is that a lot of the wifi hotspots around demand some sort of subscription. All the local ones that I want to try with my PSP demand you buy credit at an extortionate rate, which takes the shine off.
And the effective range of the WIFI in the consoles isn't amazing - you'll not have a reliable connection from more than a couple of rooms away at most. Chances of you getting away with constantly WIFIng from the foot of their garden? Slim to none.
BUT, if you do find a free wifi hotspot, let me know. I am working on a list for my magazine.

i like fighting as in ZELDA fighting (everyone knows i'm a zelda freak, right?)
Dynasty Warriors, Untold Legends.
but not metal gear solid esque type fighting, knowhattamean?
Metal Gear Ac!d is a turn-based TCG-esque stealth'em'up.
i like rpgs
Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, Lord of The Rings Tactics
puzzles
Lumines, Archer McLean's Mercury
so sony aint getting any of this hard earned cash, nah!
Serves them right for killing off homebrew.
TBH the initial line-up is a shower, and only SOCOM has looked impressive so far. BUT, there is great potential for a MMPORPG on the PSP, and that will be a deal breaker.
