I ask my fellow b-boys/b-girlies.....
without Def Jam, would the Beastie Boys have been as successful and considered pioneers, legends, grandmaster M.C.s!!?
I say hell, yeah!! I think they would have been just as good without Def Jam.
It amazes me that even RUN DMC (Russells brother Run) was not on Def Jam.....and they took there shot and did it.
Was Russell that much of a jag-off that he and his brother didnt click at one time?
Was Ric Rubin the key master to what is now today:
The Beastie Boys (as MC's)?

Not at all Russel Simmons signed Run DMC to Rush Productions, his own management company at the time, there was no Def Jam yet so he couldn't sign them that's why Run DMC signed to Profile Records in '83 but they were managed by Russel Simmons.
Def Jam didn't begin until 1984.

So aside from any label.... do you think they would have found stardom....considering how mult-talented they all are?

Yes, because even without DefJam, they would have probably still ran into the Dust Brothers, and made Pauls Boutique..... (y)

Considering Pauls Boutique didnt do so well at that time? And if it did grab the attention of a few fans..which it did, maybe more. Would it had been a major debut impact as LTI? Id like to think so. (y)

This is a good question.
Rick and DefJam really put them on the map. It's obvious the guys have serious talent and creativity but would they have had the tenacity to continue to explore it, if they had never been thrust into the big time?
They've recently mentioned they never expected to be around 24 months...let alone 24 years. So I entertain the thought that they just might have settled into "real" jobs...and may not have become the legends they are without the fast track that Rick/DefJam put them on.

There would be no Paul's Boutique without Licensed to Ill. I think they learned a lot from LTI era experience.

To me if they had stayed with Def Jam they would have faded out because Def Jam would have just made them do rap. I think even without Def Jam they would have eventually got big.

Theres no way the BBoys would have been as big without Def Jam. They were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time when Rick & Russell started the label. Thats not to underestimate their talent or anything, but this question is silly anyway.
Without Def Jam, no LTI --> no big contract with Capitol --> no PB? No fame or recognition or threads on a message board about them. Who knows?

you know, we always blame Russell for stealing money and shit and dissin him with Def Jam...but where did Rick play a part in this? thanks to Rick, there was no Bboy movie... why does Rick slide under the radar?

im sure the boys would have made an Album....somehow. they were rhymin and stealing before and with ot without Rick or Russell. Def Jam just happen to pick them up 1st.
they had young driven potential back then....they had a mission
LTI would have been done by 3rd Base....it would have blowed ass, but it would have been big. And then it would have been the END of 3rd base.

Paul's Boutique is an album ahead of its time.
Even if you listen to it today its still ahead of our time. This album is ahead anytime .......... Its an album that you're gonna appreciate only after reach some experience in music.

FALSE!! The boys were ryhmin already, they were influenced on old school hip-hop....even in the days of The Young and the Useless.

I tend to agree, I don't think they would have been picked up otherwise. Look at LL, he found it hard to get a deal, and he was dynamite on the mic.
This is all 'what ifs' anyway.....
