i remember reading some of it when i was much younger.....but it was over my head at the time (came out in 86')....
but i recently purchased the whole volume set....

sick.
just sick.

best fuckin graphic novel i have read to date....

if you've never heard...now you have.

don't sleep, peeps.

read it.

the creators of Lost mention it as a MAJOR inspiration....and you can see how. they "borrowed" alan moores whole system of storytelling, layering, flashbacks, plot clues, foreshadowing....
and you can see how this graphic novel changed the face of underground comics ever since...

I read it, but it was very long ago and I was very stoned and a little drunk.

All I really remember was that the pages were hard to turn; I was at a friend's place, it was her copy, and I really didn't want to smudge or tear anything.

I read it in the late 90's. Good stuff.

i had a rorschach avatar for a while. i still haven't really finished it (i plan to), but it's probably one of the most amazing things that i've ever read ever. there was some time magazine list of the top 100 books of the 20th century or something, and then they had one where the readers got to vote for their own favorites, i think the watchmen got #1. which is wierd, because strictly speaking, it's not a book exactly.

still, it's really really awesome.

yeah....i'm getting "V is for Vendetta" also....

i read "League of Extrodinary Gentlement" and his "Swamp Thing" works too.

all fuckin awesome.
to bad the L.E.G. sucked as a movie.

now i hear they are making "V is for Vendetta" for the big screen too...

I've read that and The Killing Joke, and...

-- those, and Peter Bagge's Hate. :D

The 2 latest graphic novels for me were good reads.

Life expectancy by Dean Koontz and Messiah by Boris Starling. Very nice and gory. Life expectancy had me in between gags and chuckles the whole way through.

I'll have to check out "The WaTHmen" too. It THeems to be my THtyle :D

I think Marvel had a graphic novel done in egyptian style chronicling the early years of En Saba Nur aka Apocolypse

i don't read x-men at all, but it's not written by some guy named chuck austin, or austin clark, or someone with "austin" in their name, is it? i hear that guy is pretty much largely ignored by later authors in terms of continuity because the shit he wrote is so ridiculous. like he made Angel an actual angel and Nightcrawler a demon, and he said the origins of mutants were from heaven and hell, or something like that, even though it's pretty well established canon that mutants are just highly-evolved humans.

that was pretty recent right? i tried to get back into the stories and saw nightcrawler having dinner with satan and being called son...

i have no idea when it was exactly. i'm not even sure if it was before/after the "ultimate" universe thing. hopefully before, that would be a crummy way to kick off the new backstory.

i don't read comics much, but i kind of wish i did, the ones i have read are really cool. seeing sin city got me into it, i went out and read all the graphic novels and was properly blown away. it's too bad comic books have such a stigma surrounding them (if you read them you're immature, they're not real art, etc) because there's really some pretty amazing stuff in them. the good ones are easily on par with any other art form. the watchmen especially.

Oops. I thought I'd read Watchmen, but I obviously haven't.

So I've been reading it at Barnes & Nobles and got about halfway through it and it's not holding my interest.

Personally, I believe this is the best graphic novel ever written.

I find Rorshach's personality repulsive, but still entertaining. My favorite character was either the Comedian or Dr. Manhattan.

...does anyone else see similarities between Comedian and TKJ's Joker?

I don't quite understand how people knew Manhattan had left Earth, by the way.

Alot of the characters are pretty unsympathetic, but I quite liked the Nite Owl / Silk Spectre story, it was touching.

I still dunno how post-Heroes they're gonna do the original storyline since Heroes series one more or less ripped it off.

well...without giving too much away about either...the idea that a bunch of "heroes" or people with powers would plot an atrocity to happen in New York in order to rally humanity made up one of the main story arcs in Heroes...

I agree but there's a monumental difference between the heroes in Watchmen and the heroes in Heroes.

The Incredibles lifted a bit of stuff, too, it seems.

Oh definitely..just that the main plot device is so similar.

It's hard not to peel one or two things from Watchmen given how fantastic it is. Too bad a huge chunk of the population will never read it because they think comic books are below them.

Does anyone else find the pirate story sort of an annoyance at times? Gerard Butler is supposed to narrate the animated story that's being shoved onto the bonus features dvd.

yup...in fact the only part of Watchmen I didn't like was the pirate bit...when I heard they were doing it for the film I wasn't too pleased, but as you say, it looks like its gonna be done as an extra now.

I'm hoping that in addition to that little animated movie, they throw in some sort of 'Behind the Mask' or some sort of short video on Hollis.

I was never huge on the pirate bits either - but I think it's supposed to be an analogy for Adrian Veidt.

**SPOILERS**

Consider that the pirate (sailor? I forget) realized the only way he could get what he wanted (home) was to ride on the dead bodies of people. He became a desensitized monster to reach his ends, just like Veidt. His goals were lofty, but was it worth the price he paid to get there?

I wasn't crazy about the whole Mars episode, either. Really indulgent. That could have been cut by 70% and you wouldn't have lost anything.

I agree that was kind of long. I think that Moore was trying to take his time to illustrate the point that Manhattan was becoming less and less attached to humanity though. Without that section showing his acceleration towards isolation, Veidt's decision to create a catalyst to exile him prematurely would have made less sense.
