...so,
One of our local music stores offers a deal on one's birthday: buy one of their cheap bin CDs and get three free.
The cheap bins are loaded with all the crap -- Jody Watley albums, tons of bands you've never heard of, your uncle who decided to make a new age album a press up 1,000 copies...
But there are some nice finds, too: I've gotten Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane CDs in there -- their only sins being that a cover booklet was missing or they were playable but too scratched to sell for top used dollar.
Now: the store also has stations linked up to AMG's catolog, so you can scan the bar code (if there is one) or type in the artist or album title and get sound samples.
So yesterday, I spent an hour grabbing stuff... cool covers, awful covers, Chinese pop albums (none were in the database, I'm afraid), etc., and wound up with some real gems. And now, even if you have zero interest, you can follow me and listen to song samples, too; if any of this crap ever turns up on your radar, by all means -- check it out.
Mainly, I am TRULY DIGGING Horse Noodles' Horse Noodles (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57F18D249A97320C5903C40CCB269A329D94E FB87126E495AD1A926499E0C74E80BA695CCB0E577B566ADFF 2EA1160ED3C0EE5FF6D8652D4CF0&sql=10:7zm1z84a4yvj). Oh, man. This is good, good stuff. I would've probably paid full price for it. Odd electronica with some strangeness -- touches of Brian Wilson or John Zorn or the dude's 7th grade math class or something. Very listenable and just righteously odd. Hails from Van Nuys, California, supposedly. Follow Lunatic Works' (http://www.lunaticworks.com) web site, too -- it's interesting.

The sort of CD that you'd think sounded absolutely amazing at a party, then you go and buy it and think, oh, it's okay; must've been the acid. Except that it really is pretty darned good -- kind of a cross between Galaxie 500 and My Bloody Valentine, and somebody's definitely heard U2's Unforgettable Fire once or twice. Goes from dreamy to anthemetic kind of like you'd expect of this sort of thing, except they really do pull it off. Nicely done.
Hey, you MILES DAVIS fans -- most of his backup group from the seventies called themselves Children on the Corner and made a good, almost-avant album called Rebirth (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57F18D249A97320C5903C40CCB269A329D94E FB87126E495AD1A926499E0C74E80BA695CCB0E577B566ADFF 2EA1160ED3C0ED5EF6D9642D4CF0&sql=10:licibka9sakx). It's worth more than a listen; too early to tell if it's a grower, but it's definitely not a pointless vanity project.
The Crimea wins best album title of this post for Lottery Winners on Acid. (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57F18D249A97320C5903C40CCB269A329D94E FB87126E495AD1A926499E0C74E80BA695CCB0E577B566ADFF 2EA1160ED3C0EA57F6DD632D4CF0&sql=10:rj2vad1kw8wo) Fairly straight alternative stuff, which should be a contradiction, but, whatever. On closer inspection, this turned out to be an EP -- about 18 minutes long -- which kind of sucks, but it's really nice stuff, and that title cut is terrific. It's a really, really solid EP, also -- they get on, do their bit, and get off without drawing things out -- so think of all those albums that only had the hit or two and a couple few other good songs, and how they should've just junked the filler -- ? Maybe that's what we have here. I likes it.
Have you folks heard of Mono? I've only sampled Formica Blues (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE57F18D249A97320C5903C40CCB269A329D94E FB87126E495AD1A926499E0C74E80BA695CCB0E577B566ADFF 2EA1160ED3C0EA52F6DE602D4CF0&sql=10:uduh6j5o71l0) and need to give it a good listen, but it's really promising. Good stuff.
If any of you folks have ever heard any of this stuff and have some dialogue, or just want to share treasures from the cheap seats, please do.
...all this for $4.07 US, including tax.
God bless the cut out bins.
