Who's with me? I get depressed around the holidays.
I started feeeling that way many years ago but 5 yrs ago, on Dec 21st, my dad died. He didn't like christmas very much and we always teased him about being the grinch, but that year he made it clear he wasn't doing one more christmas. So since he died, christmas and the holidays are even more depressing for me because he's missing. :(
I'm already starting to stress out about getting gifts for everyone when we really don't have enough money to do it right. every year i think about saying hey we're not doing x-mas, don't get us anything etc, but I feel bad about not participating and I know some people would get us something anyway. And then there's spliting our time up between my boyfriend and my's families during the holidays. It's a pain in the ass trying to figure out where to be with so many things going on simultaneously and there's no way to please everyone without spreading ourselves too thin. :(
so yeah, other than the time off form work...the holidays really suck ass.
poo.

ok you sillys, I made this thread because I thought someone out there may have some compelling arguments to help restore my faith in the holidays...but...given the lack of response you all either love the holidays and consider me a paria for my holiday blasphemy....or you all agree they suck and you're too depressed to respond.

I know holidays are supposed to be about family and what not but I really like getting together with my friends and making a big holiday dinner and doing a gift exchange or something. Its a time for people to reconnect with those they may have lost touch with in their busy lives. I love the holidays.

I loved Christmas until that painful year I ran over Bob Cratchit...Who would've thought chains on tires couldn't perform up to expectations

cookiepuss, if you can, try to be with people who will appreciate you the most and don't do anything out of guilt
that is some pretty good advice.
you brought up guilt...which kinda brings me back to what turd said....are people compelled to act a certain way during the holidays because they feel guilt that they don't act that way 365 days a year? and if so why don't more of us carry the x-mas spirit through the year so we don't have to feel guilty? Why can't we be better people all the time, or is that just against our flawed nature?
maybe also, our expectations for the holidays are too high. we are bombarded with messages that this is suppose to be a great time of year..but for so many people it's a time of suffereing in some form or another.

I don't count Halloween int he "holidays". Halloween rocks.
the blues set in around turkey day and carry through until new years. New years kinda breaks the cycle because it's a time of new begining and I get somewhat hopeful....but by thanksgiving the following year when i haven't reached all of the goals I set forth...well you see the cycle.

i think the holiday are the best profit time of year for consommation.ITs all about consomation>the spirit of christmas is base on false value.YOU have to give gift to show people that you like them, you have to make enormous dinner ,with beautiful clothes, nice table to impress your friends ,family.
go buy,buy and buy, spend your money to show your love, bullshit!
holiday should be a time when you are with people who you like and have a blast. In my family we dont really give gifts(except the kids),we just hanging out together and ,,well drink and laught!
what this is all about feel pressure, high expectation!
for real, coca cola invent santa claus, that give you a idea on what holiday are built on!

The few days after new years are always the hardest time of year for me. There is such a dearth of things going on at that time. Valentine's Day in Feb if you're into that, but other than that there is really nothing to look forward to until Summer.
Its good for snowboarding, that's about all it has to offer.

At the very least, this Christmas compilation is decent. If you're emo/indie. :p
