I've seen it, and honestly, in my opinion, it's because...

#1: It's about "our generation", and "our generation" has nothing better to do then see mediocre plays about "our generation".

#2: Most fans of musicals are women and gay men, and this play "speaks" to both of them fairly well.

I thought it was just OK. My wife is a big fan of musicals, so I've seen my share, and this one doesn't really rank for me.

I can't buy into that on so many levels it's unbelievable.

1) It's a musical; good musicals are a huge exception

2) It's about lionizing people who make really, really awful lifestyle choices

3) Chris Columbus directed it

I absolutely HATED the broadway show! I wanted to love it. I saw it right after it won all the awards.

The music is dreadful. (what's the big song? 356,675,778 minutes, 2934592392039529305 seconds?)
The staging was dreadful. (dark and industrial to drive the point home that poor people are depressing)
The fake rock band was pitiful.
The costumes were lame, etc.

And the whole time, I wanted to scream "get a fucking job!!!" That was the wrong reaction because we're apparently supposed to be moved and surprised that people who have no apparent talent, who nevertheless move to NYC, where they refuse to take jobs where they might make some actual money, and instead they strum guitars badly in an apartment, all the while failing to pay the landlord anything, may be forced to leave said apartment. The heavily perfumed old ladies from the suburbs sitting next to me seemed to enjoy the show. My friend and I both worked more than one job while going to school and paying rent and we were unmoved. (My friend also has actual musical talent and she said the music was woefully out of tune.)

Oh, and my friends who loved the show said that the woman playing the crach whore at my show wasn't the best actress in that role, but I don't think it really mattered.

Oh man oh man. This show, I fucking love it. When I actually listen to a lot of the lyrics, I laugh because they can blow big dick, but it's a really fun energizing show. I've seen it ten times, almost all from the front two rows, and it just pulls you in.

I'm really excited for this film especially since it's almost the entire original cast (including Anthony Rapp who I got to hang out with once yayyyy). A ton of people i know saw it tonight but I'm going Wednesday.

A lot of people don't "get" the big deal with this show, and I can understand that. But musicals in general are silly and out there, so whatever. Just enjoy.

Well, technically she did already let them hang out in He Got Game. But Spike was pretty stingy with the shot so you could barely tell. Plus Ray Allen had them in his hands so they weren't necessarily "hanging" per se, but...yeah anyway, carry on.

You know what dude really used to like showing his groin a lot? Ewan McGregor. I used to wonder what the hell his problem was because every second movie I saw him in, his friggin wang had to make an appearance. But since becoming more of a mainstream movie regular, he's learned to keep his joint behind his zipper, thankfully. But seriously, what a douche that guy is. And on a related note, his singing in Moulin Rouge (which was among the more torturous movies I've been forced to sit through) was ridiculously annoying.

Moulin Rouge Exclamation Point! is one movie I walked out of. I couldn't stand it -- made it about forty minutes, maybe.

Though I thought Ewan was damned game in that, and in Down With Love*, for that matter. He seemed to slip into that Movie Musical mode (including acting/singing style) easily, and he's got a fetching smile. I was actually impressed; that shit's hard to do, and that MR movie must've been about 30 setups for every two seconds of film, so.... bully for you, dude.

[RENT is] a long-awaited, long-overdue film adaptation that plays like Last Exit To Brooklyn as reinterpreted by Up With People. Yes, Rent is the movie about AIDS, heroin addiction, homosexuality, strippers, marijuana, cross-dressing, and bisexuality audiences can take their grandparents to go see safe in the knowledge that any lingering trace of danger or authenticity has been carefully removed by director/co-writer Chris Columbus, who previously proved his countercultural mettle with Mrs. Doubtfire and the first two Harry Potter films.

I saw it! Jampacked theater, I had to wait for my friend and she was a bit late so I didn't get to sit by anyone I knew which resulted in me cheering all by my lonesome (just at the end of a few songs).

I was drunk at the beginning!

I loved it! But I wish the music would have been louder, I wanted to feel it in my veins. It's absolutely impossible for me to not like this movie, I know every single line already, I fill in the blanks they don't talk about because I know the story, so I don't know how I could have not liked it. Except in What You Own, Roger is like in the desert....wtf? That was goofy.

Though I kept expecting Jesse L. Martin to solve a murder.

I love Angel, such a great character.

Fuck, I just love it all. The passion, the love, the message. I don't like that people bitch about it being about well-to-do youngins living in NY trying to be bohemians - SO FUCKING WHAT?? It's mentioned in the play/film MORE than a few times that perhaps they are just all hypocrites, etc., etc.

YAY IM GONNA BE SINGIN THE MUSIC ALL NIGHT.

I saw it. It's okay. I find the character Angel and her partner the most interesting and touching.

The guy opposite Mimi irritated the ever-living hell out of me though and everything he sang reminded me of really horrible 80s hair metal ballad songs.

Tell that to Tom Wopat. He sang like a real man in Annie Get Your Gun.
Ha Ha! John Schneider was AWESOME in Oklahoma!!!

I sure don't want to lose more friends over this stupid Rent phenom. :(
But it sucks.

saw the film yesterday with my dad... i think he really got it. i kept thinking "i lived on ave a. no one sang."

oh, and the original cast thing is great and all.. but theyre playing people in their early 20's, and the only person in that age group is rosario dawson. eh.

It never really says they're in their 20s in the movie though does it? I don't think that has to be a set thing.

I love the character of Angel and how the story is kind of focused around him/her. Very beautiful.

While I was at the dentist today getting cavities filled (in my TEETH), I sang Rent in my head to distract myself. Then I realized they were talking about Rent. They could tell I was reacting to what they were talking about so they were all "oh, have you seen the play" and i Liked raised my fingers for how many times and then they asked if I'd seen wicked and I shook my head and I felt like a fucking retard but it was funny and that's all.
