a mash up is when you take 2 already made songs and "mash" them into 1
for instence
a remix is when you take 1 song and re-mix it with a new beat that you made
examples: 1st is a mash-up second is a remix
mash-up (http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=25704)
remix (http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=25398)
get it now?

BIG DIFFERENCE.
REMIX:: You create the music from scratch and build it around the vocals.
MASH-UP: You take someone's vocals and put them on top of someone else's music. You don't create anything. It's like introducing two strangers.
And Casey D types faster than me :D

sorry to labour a point here but not knowing too much about mash ups - I have a question - i know its a vocal track over something else but does there have to have been some sort of production done still to make it a mash up i.e an effect or a loop here and there. Its just that i could put the acapellas over a beat on my decks and record that but that doesnt seem to me to be very creative so i wouldnt have thought that was a mash up. Sorry if your'e tired of answering this one, I am a bit of a newbie at all this.
Casey D - your mash up is deleted from your link if you didnt know already

good idea (y) (y)
mash-ups and remixes should be separate.
also, remixes for other bands should be somewhere else (so they don't crowd the beasties :p)

sorry - i was rambling a bit, Basically , I have two cd decks and a mixer so what i wanted to know :
Could a mash up be :
Beastie boys Acapella on one cd deck
Instrumental by another artist played at same speed on another cd deck
and then recorded as one track
Or
Does it require a bit more production to be considered a mash up?

i think just using another artists track makes it a mash up...
more production makes it better (y)
(this is purely an educated guess...but it makes sense)

sounds good enough to me. Cheers, i suppose the best way to work it out is to make a mash up and see what everyone thinks.

There are a lot of remixes and lots of mashups on here but as long as you put mash up or remix in the thread title, people can still choose what they listen to - anyways I am cool with the idea if thats what most people want.
