Watch out, bitches. I just spent my entire night camped out in front of a Best Buy, like an idiot, to get one of these suckers just so I can sell it on eBay when Christmas season hits hard.
The bad part is, I'm kind of tempted to open the damn thing and hook it up and go rent a game or two. Seriously, I'll admit that camping in front of the store with all those dorks was one of the stupidest things I've ever done, and probably will do. I'm never camping out for a console release ever again... not in this damn state.
Anybody actually score an XBOX 360 that they're going to play with? Chances are if you did you're probably not sitting on the computer looking at the message board... so I don't know why I asked. But feel free to tell me about how stupid I am for camping in front of a store.

I think it's pretty dickheaded (Not saying you're a dickhead, SS, but, you know...) when people buy up all the latest hot commodities to profit from something that other people genuinely want to own or buy for someone else. It's like dealing with ticket scalpers. I mean, there's other ways to make money. Buying a large quantity of something that's readily available to everyone hoping it will be worth more someday is a "shrewd business move", but lining up for something that manufacturers already produce in limited quantities to begin with, something you don't even want for yourself, that's low budget hustling.

call it what you want, but using the concept of supply and demand to your benefit is a hallmark of capitalism.
in truth, someone ALWAYS comes out ahead in every transaction that takes place in a free-market system.

So what do you have against Wal Mart then? Not necessarily in regards to supply and demand, but from an ethical standpoint, taking advantage of people, coming out ahead etc.
oh christ...now we gotta get into this.
well, in this particular occurance, we are talking about a huge differance in scale...so the effects aren't even comparable...
but if you are just speaking of the underlying ethical practice between the two, they still are not comparable.
what Scary is doing is not unethical. he buys a hot commodity..and sells if for profit. the people who buy it from him do not need it....they just want it. it's a luxury item, and it causes no harm to the Microsoft empire...no one loses out, no one is muscled out...
this is classic Import/Exporter economics.
what Walmart does, and has established itself in practice....is to be predatory in nature to it's suppliers.
it is the largest retail store on the fuckin planet.
many companies must have thier products on Walmart's shelves to survive....but Walmart will only accept those products on thier shelves at a certain low price, a price that lowers every year. so how do those suppliers cope? they nail THEIR suppliers into lower prices, and so on. along the way, companies have to cut benefits, lay off workers, etc.. to meet those lower costs.
and if you don't? Walmart drops you....and in most cases, your company goes under. massive layoffs and all that.
it's a bullying system that can ONLY result in all of the suppliers getting hurt AND the US economy suffering in the manufacturing sector.
where do you think Walmart and her suppliers have to go to produce products at lower and lower costs?
China.
bye bye US manufacturing jobs.

I don't understand the "it's not on the same scale" argument.
If one person's power allows them to do "X," and one corporation's power allows them to do 100,000(X), it's pretty much the same scale, actually.
Why would anyone think that more power would make them more bound to ethics? When has that ever been the case? That power didn't corrupt but, instead, healed?
Pretty rare.

then why the mention of Walmart, and my disatisfaction with them? my qualms with Walmart have little to do with natural supply and demand movements.
but rather the predatory practices the walmart makes use of to increase profit and the expense of the american workforce and the US economy.

I don't understand the "it's not on the same scale" argument. any percieve "damage" that scary could do would be nothing in comparison to a corporation. pretty simple.
If one person's power allows them to do "X," and one corporation's power allows them to do 100,000(X), it's pretty much the same scale, actually. umm...no. there is a differance of 100,000 in the scale.
Why would anyone think that more power would make them more bound to ethics? When has that ever been the case? That power didn't corrupt but, instead, healed? who said that? what are you talking about?

Yeah, I don't buy into the whole "same scale" thing too much either. You either agree with certain practices or you don't. It' pretty simple.
Q, everything we're discussing here still involves accepting or not accepting dog-eat-dog/survival of the fittest doctrine, no?

....basically, the idea is that whether it's one person abusing things or one company abusing 1,000,000 things, it's still an ethical situation.
You're either pregnant or not; there's no "I'm pregnant, a little."
There's an apocrophal story about Churchill going up to some beautiful actress and saying, "Madam, would you sleep with me for 40,000 pounds?"

Q, everything we're discussing here still involves accepting or not accepting dog-eat-dog/survival of the fittest doctrine, no?
again mike, no.
first off, i stated that BEYOND the scale....the 2 practices engaged upon by scary and by Walmart are completely different. so just drop that all together.
see, what scary is doing is not predatory at all.
look at what microsoft does: buy the resources to manufacture the xbox (cost). then sell the xbox at a price high enough to cover thier costs AND still more, for profit. that's capitalism.
what scary is doing is just adding another step. he buys one, and sells it to someone else at a mark up, IF THEY ARE WILLING TO PAY THAT MUCH FOR IT.
remember....scary still has to compete with other sellers, who may sell thier xbox for less...or the buyer could just sit and wait for a month, and just buy it at Best Buy for much much less. the consumer still has a choice, AND competition is still intact to keep prices at a certain level. free market.
now if scary bought EVERY SINGLE FUCKIN XBOX and marked the price waaaaaaaaay up, then you have predatory practice, monopoly, ect....because the free market and competition has been nullified.
how does that compare with what Walmart does?
Qdrop

....basically, the idea is that whether it's one person abusing things or one company abusing 1,000,000 things, it's still an ethical situation.
i'm not debating the quality of the ethics between the 2, obviously the principle of the ethics remains the same....but the SCALE has a DIRECT connection to the end result.
who will do more damage?
be pragmatic.
and that extreme differance in scale, and thus end result, DOES effect the ethics of the situation...due the amount of people effected. (but that last part is just my opinion)

Unless you intend to import them from japan I doubt it will be the same as the xbox mate.
If the ps1 and 2 launches are anything to go by they will launch in Japan and all of the lunatics that would splash out tons of cash to have it on day one will get one from there, or from someone that got it from there.
I reckon that by the time it gets released in the US all of the insane people will have one already.

Nah, because I'd laugh if someone was actually stupid enough to leave something like that sitting where the dog could chew on it. I took the picture with my dog for my auction to prove that I actually have one and I'm not one of these people saying they'll ship in two weeks or whatever. well thanks to SONY's draconian EULAs and Region restrictions, I don't have to worry about people buying Japanese PS3s unless they're japanese or fluent in japanese since they won't play US games.
so yay for me, and knowing that SONY loooooooooooves to trickle into the market to create demand, I'm gonna be doin just fine come this time next year.

Heh, you so don't know the market :D
People will be flocking to get japanese ps2's on release date and will play whatever obscure game in japanese they can get their hands on. I know of people that don't speak a word of japanese that finished the japanese version of final fantasy X (or a similarly huge and complex game).
I'm not saying you won't get rid of the US ps2's if the demand is higher than the offered amount but the margin probably won't be as insane as it is with the xbox. Also because knowing Sony the first batch might have a pretty high price tag.
King PSYZ

Churchill said, "We've already established that; now we're merely haggling price."

holy shit (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v369/gobby_/wtfebay.jpg) you can barely read it but some dumbass is trying to sell it for 14k. If he actually pulls it off, maybe he's not such a dumbass but in the meantime...
looks like she did pull it off. she has 2 bids already. damn.

The joke's on me so far... nobody's bid on it yet (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8236351874).
....no bids? Did you close the auction, or did you actually get no bids?
I can disapprove, empathize, walk, and chew gum at the same time.
And read. I can sing while I read. I am singing... and reading both.

the main catching point is starting it at 99 cents on a 1 day auction. everyone and their dog will bid on that. that will raise awareness. not putting it at 400 bucks.

my son wants an xbox 360 for christmas. i can't afford the outrageous ebay prices though, and i can no longer camp outside of stores like i did when the PS2 came out. i think i was outside of target from like 11pm until they opened at 8 to get the PS2. you meet some whack people camping out overnight at target.

Whack as in people who drink their own piss for sustinance, or whack as in avid gamers wearing t-shirts that say something Nintendo-witty like those t-shirts with 'quarter-circle-forward-fierce-punch'?
I'm the second guy.

XBOX 360 = licks balls
It's good on paper, but that's about it. I'm amazed that the first-gen models got out the door without someone realizing they all had overheating problems. I rented it for a week along with 'Gun' and 'King Kong'. Sure, they look good...but try playing it for an hour.
It won't happen. As soon as it overheats, you have to let it sit and cool down or it will just overheat again promptly. I forsee legions of gamers mounting this POS in their freezers just to get a chance to play it for more than 15 minutes at a time.
It's hit-or-miss playing it. Much like the first XBOX launch, they got the jump on the Sony, but market share will surely go to Sony as well with all the problems associated with Microsoft's console(s).
