View Full Version : freelance jobbing is hard.

it is.
it's so hand to mouth and quite terrifying, really.
for those who don't know me (and after 6 or so years you should really be tired of me now!) i have recently graduated and am now working in the [yes, it does exist] scottish film/television industry.
my first [and current] job finishes mid december and i don't know what will be happening after in the new year. i don't know if i'll ever get another job again. who knows? i may well get one but it seems hard.. all the people here are quite set in their ways, a bit clique-y and likely to employ the same people they've worked with before. why would they take a chance in getting me when they have experience with other people from their previous jobs?
i just find it really soul destroying that i will most likely have to sign on to a temp agency to do crappy office jobs for a while.
it's sad cos i know i am capable of doing this while bloody standing on my head.
but i guess this is what i have signed myself up for for life.. unless i get a job with a studio. or with a development agency - i see working with the film council as more of a challenge.
anyway. are there other people out there with freelance-style short term jobs? what's the craic with your situation?

I'm self employed and money can be a pain to come across. Sometimes not. No continuous income is scary, but in my opinion more rewarding. But this ain't short term, but I'll hopefully make enough money to keep myself ticking over.
Anyway, good luck with it all Claire (it is Claire yeah?). See, I'm trying to be clever to show I even remember your name cus you've been here that long but I've probably got it wrong.
Was East is East Scottish? That is the only Scottish film I can think of...

Oh, I saw a nice Scottish film recently. I forget what it was called though but it was about this little boy who believed his dad was a sailor and his mum used to write him letters as though they were from his dad, but actually there was no dad, and then the boy finds out the ship he believes the dad is on is going to be docking in town soon and the mother decides to hire some guy to pretend he's the dad because she doesn't want the kid to know he hasn't got one. It was very sweet really. I think it might be called Letters to Frankie or something like that?
edited to add: I just remembered, the kid is meant to be deaf I think, and it's not that there's 'no' dad, but that he's a violent drunk or something and the mom keeps moving the family around so he can't find them, or soemthing like that.

I'm doing some (very) part-time system administration, some translating and am currently preparing a presentation for someone.
The biggest pain of working free lance is the insurance bits in my opinion. I've weaseled my way out of having to get a special kind of health insurance and other kinds of things but if you are a proper free lancer you need to get those things sorted too.
On an unrelated note...
I got tickets to the new me first and the gimme gimme's tour in may after the other one got cancelled!
So yeah.

my friend keeps getting contract jobs for different govt ministries doing random fishery/water flow work and she's stresses out each time her work terms are up but something always ALWAYS comes along
and this way she is always doing something new and gets to change environments and makes tons of contacts along the way
so I thinks she belives that the extreme stress she feels in between jobs is worth it for the variety and general radness that working on such cool different projects all the time provides to her life

i think you have to take as many logging positions as you can until one of them leads to something else.

wow dude and dudettes - wise words indeed! thanks a bunch.
i am working on a feature film called "red road" directed by 2005 best short film oscar winner andrea arnold! yup! not every day you get to work with an academy award winner eh? but i better not go into it cos i'd hate for this [and my messaging history!] to be googled by the rest of the crew!
it is sort of exciting in that you do get to meet lots of people on different jobs, and you don't have to apply for, like.. holidays and stuff like that. how depressing is that in long term jobs? not being able to go on holiday when you want! i guess i can go off a travel after every 5 jobs or something if i so wished.
tons 'o: yup it's claire :) east is east? that's based in manchester i'm afraid, but north nonetheless!
peaches: the film you are talking about is dear frankie! superb! that is definitely a local film, and one that even i haven't seen! everyone loves it cos whatshisname in it is the phantom of the [new] opera and we love scottish actors who are successful!

keep working at it, nastee...
I have done my fair share of P.A. work and interning , and it pays off to make some good contacts for the future.
if you are on your first job, soak it all in, you may have no work down the line, but at the same time, they might keep you busy until next year rolls around and you will be turning down jobs before you know it...

this thread got me thinking actually. has anyone ever taken 'work from home part time' job to supplement their income for a short time? Cus I'm thinking about it and not sure if it pays to do so? I could get a seperate job but I don't want to. I like the freedom I have right now. Plus I sometimes get the chance to do some labouring (on my terms) which pays better than anything for several days hard graft than it would sitting in a office or standing on a shop floor for two weeks. So if I had job I had to go to with set hours, it'd fudge a lot of things up.
So yeah, anyone have or taken a 'work from home part time' job and have any advice or suggestions?
edit: ie would anyone do anything like this? (http://sheffield.gumtree.com/sheffield/36/2938236.html)

I don't even trust the medicines that make it to the general public, let alone wanting to be a guinea pig, signing a waiver and have my testicles fall off just because I wanted to get an xbox 360 for christmas.
