Haha, I remember that. I met him once in Byron Bay 6-7 years ago. When I first started going out with the Lovely Mazz she rented a room from a woman who used to be their tour manager and one day when he was in town (One of the Oils, Jim Moginie maybe, lives just down the road in Suffolk Park) and they came round to say g'day and have a cup of tea. We shot the shit for a few minutes about the surf. He's quite tall.
Kick-arse live band. 10-1 is one of my favorite records.

Nice! Me and my mates were going to hire out a house in suffolk park a while back but it was too bloody expensive and we couldnt get our act together. Woulda been cool to bump into one of the band members. Anyway, thats where I stayed last time I was in byron, lovely place and a really nice beach thats not too crowded (y)

Yo, Midnight Oil was my first Arena Rock concert. I was 8, maybe 9. My pops took me and my twin brother. Everybody sparked up [not us of course] I asked "what's that smell?" My dad said "Fun". The dudes standing in front of me felt bad I couldn't see, so they opted to sit down.
I remember being really confused by the concept of an opening band. I just couldn't figure out how the dudes playing the music were not midnight oil. Oh well.
Random.

I saw them on the Diesel and Dust tour.
their very, very opening -- the way the concert started, the look, the explosion of the first few notes, etc. -- is, to this day, still the most powerful theatrical/concert opening I've seen.
Damned good show, but a wee bit close to all the records, for my taste. It really, truly did sound at times like it was just playing the record live with a tiny bit more speed and occasionally different phrasing or backing vocal arrangements or something. Great showmanship, but zero surprises.
Except for the drummer. That dude's pipes were HUGE. HUGE. Jeez.
They defnitely had integrity. The two opening acts were way off the geaten track -- the very first act was a small group of Aborignes on native instruments, and fuck this college crowd if they can't take it, seemed to be the idea. (y)

...I never really got into that one. That one or... Bird Noises? Was that the title?
