So, here I am. You're healthy, late 30's, father of one, with another on the way. Since July, I haven't been feeling quite right. I'd feel bad, then get better. Around mid October, my stomach started filing with Ascites -- not pretty. Turns out I have a blood clot of the liver. Scary, but I'm sure I'm going to heal on my own, right -- afterall, the liver is the only organ that regenerates itself.

Well, I have a rare liver disorder called budd chiari. It's so rare, there is one doctor in San Francisco who is the Northern California expert, and he's just written a paper on my condition. I guess it's genetic, and affects people, regardless of age, health, etc. Before anyone asks, no, I am not a heavy drinker -- did my share in college -- and all the liver damage appears new.

So, back to me. I talk to a doctor -- not the liver specialist, mind you, on Thursday, 11/3. He, and my mom, help arrange an appointment for Friday, 11/4. They tell me to bring a bag, as I might be admitted to the hospital. So, 9:00 am Friday morning, I'm there. By 10:30 am, I'm in the emergency room, and by 4:00 pm, they are inserting something called a tips, to help blood flow around the clot. I was in the hospital for 11 days.

If there is a lesson here, it's that life is precious, and take each day for what it is.

I hope everyone is well.

Wow! Hope you are feeling well now, after that ordeal.

What's your situation in the longer term? Do you need to make any major lifestyle adjustments?

Take care of yourself. Do you and Mrs. Marsdaddy have a friend or relative on hand to help you out? With the little one and Mrs. M being 'with child' and you recuperating, it must be a bit of a handful.

Thanks guys. Yes, I'm on the mend. Yesterday, I started to clean up my work and personal emails. Tomorrow, I'm off for a walk with some friends.

Long term, no one really nows. I'm on some meds today, and a low salt diet. When my liver fully drains, I should be back on salt, at least. But, chances are very good I'll be back to "normal" in a month or so.

Good Lord! I'm sorry you and your family are going through this. :(

Life just hands you a bag of shit sometimes. The trick is to find a way to use it for fertilizer.

Get better soon buddy. (y)

That's crazy, man. Glad to hear you're recuperating well, though.

Yeah, I never take my life/health/luck for granted. I kinda get on my wife's nerves sometimes with my endless asssortment of seemingly apathetic cliched responses to every unfortunate occurence like, "oh well, these things happen" or "could be worse". I mean, yeah I get a little pissed off when somebody steals our car while our other car's in the shop for repairs or when 3 different major household appliances die and need replacing within weeks of eachother (seriously though, wtf?). These are just inconveniences. There's nothing tragic about somebody keying your car or stealing your trash can. As long as I can still make trite remarks like, "life goes on" or "at least nobody died" then I'm good.

This too shall pass, man.

Amen brother! I haven't had anything quite as dramatic happen to me but recently I've been reevaluating what's really important to me and changes I need to make in my life. I'm very glad you're okay and it sounds like you've got a lot to be thankful this year.

Sorry to hear about the health problems man, must have been a real shock. Glad to hear you're getting it sorted, and hope you're back to playing ball soon.

Plus congratulations to you and Mrs Mars for your good news, when is she due?

happy to hear you made it out alright. life is so fragile.Truer words have not been spoken. I've actually had both disrupted though last night I slept 7 hours straight -- my longest stint in over a month.

Plus congratulations to you and Mrs Mars for your good news, when is she due?Oh man. Mrs. marsdaddy is so cute. I'm recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit and she asks the dr. if and when I can play ball again -- I'm worried about getting home, showering, and shaving, mind you. The dr says, "he can play, but I want him to wear a helmet to avoid a head injury." Now, my friends all want to go out and buy helmets to play in solidarity.

Alas, I fear my basketball career is over. I'll be back to lifting, yoga, and maybe add swimming to my routine, instead.

We're due with our 2nd child -- a boy -- in early March 06.

Thanks again for the good thoughts, everyone.

exactly what i was going to say. there is nothing stronger on earth, manmade or natural, for the liver. dandelion extract is good for cleansing it, milk thistle is good for rebuilding it. the liver's the only organ in the body that you could cut off, i think the number's 2/3 of it, and it would regenerate itself.

anyway, what everybody else has already said...but i'm glad you're making it out okay, and a little wiser for it. and congrats on the bun in the oven! mookie's going to have a little sibling! that's great news.

life is indeed precious. i'm sorry you had to go through that. i don't think i could handle an ordeal like that, and come out of it with composure.
