View Full Version : Do you believe in God?

Here's the deal folks (im gonna employ some Qdrop style board Nazi-ing here)
This is NOT a discussion about organised religion, wether jesus turned water into wine or wether Martin Luther was right. We all have our thoughts on that....

Its NOT a place to flame other peoples beliefs, it's a very simple question. Do you believe in a God like figure (im defining it as the broad, all powerful, creator type)?

I do.

i do, but not in a religious way, more in a spiritual way.
i don't believe there is a god that looks like an old man with white hair and a beard, though. i believe that there is a higher power which we call god, allah, buddha etc., all the same in my eyes. i also believe in reincarnation.

I believe in God; however, I believe there is also a possibility of there being no god.

if there is a God, I hope that that God sees and understands how and why I do or do not believe. If there is no god, then nothing is nothing and nothing really matters and I welcome the darkness of nothingness of leaving this existance. What can you do really? There is really no way to know for sure;

Yes....no....i don't know. Im a scientist but I also have a spiritual life - the two kinda clash.

For the purposes of this discussion, it might help if we had a definition or some terms of reference to help us understand the concept of God. Some of us have our own ideas of what God may or may not be, some of us may even be uncomfortable with the term 'God' because of that words relationship to organised religion or because of the implied gender reference.

Anyways, do I believe in God? I don't know what God is. But I do believe in the connection I feel with this planet when I'm catching kick-arse waves a sunrise, when I'm walking through rainforest listening to birdcalls and waterfalls, when I'm shout the lyrics to 'Sliver' by Nirvana with my son and when I make love to my wife and when I see my daughter smile. These things are spiritual to me. They are simple and beautiful.

alright, im just gonna copy some excerpts of doubts/opinions/theories ive written before about this subject. and roosta, why no debating? whats the point really if we just have yes and no answers? i think everyone should type up their theories/opinions. unless youre conducting a poll for a further reason, then i get it.

first off, some questions about why we He has given us the power to doubt and question him.

1) Christianity is a faith, not a proven fact. but Why? If we were, "to live eternally in the Kingdom of heaven", then why not have us know concretely instead of having us "believe" and need to "have faith"? Is it because if the act of winning a place in heaven due to no sinning, repenting and good action would be a known definite fact for everyone, life would turn into a huge superficial competition? Would we not love, give, share and communicate and build and touch and feel and think because its a means in itself but beacuse its a means to an end? Would it all turn into a cheap and superficial competition to get into the Kingdom of Heaven?

The thing is, if You were to answer me right now, You would prove me wrong, so if You dont prove and answer me, Youre proving me right.

On the impossibility of the Superhuman

2) If you were to be told that you are the highest Almighty, would you believe them? Not mattering what or who informs you of this, it could be a person, a shoe, an angel, but of course int this world, in the only one we know of, that we live in, would you believe in them? If you answered yes, i say this to be impossible. If you were to be told by a certain something you were the Almighty, then the action of them telling you, would be contradicting that information itself. That information would have to come from another source, informing the messenger that is informing you, an outside source knew it before you and decided to tell you, showing a greater capacity than you, the supposed Almighty, bringing us to the conclusion that in this earth, no human can possibly be the Almighty, there cannot be a superhuman.

But then, you say, what if you were to be convinced yourself that you are the Almighty, if the information would burn from your insides and you were to have a force inside you assuring you of your powers, how to prove this is not a natural human reaction common to all? How to prove you are the only one with this reaction/information? How to prove it isnt just something that comes from or is a part of philosophizing or something else?

oh shit, i forgot to say yes or no...my familys christian so thats where ive been led, i consider myself a Christian with lots of doubts though, so maybe a semi-christian. i dont go to church simply because im not interested and because i value an individual connection with God rather than a public one, i dont have a problem going though, i do enjoy it the few times i go. i really enjoy asking questions and doubting about religion, which i think is much more valuable than that part of the population that robotically go to church every week not really sure why, being pushed by the inertia the custom in their catholic families creates

fucktopgirl

people need something to believe in because if not half of the population would be at lost sea, wandering if it mean something to work 40 hours a weeks, pay bill and so on...so they rely on god to help them get trought this!\

religion was create to gather people together,,but its like a blind faith sometime,if you take out that religion people dont ahve a mind of thewir own and that is pretty sad!Religion know about their power and they abuse of it.
Like the catholic religion they talk about sin and that hurting people is not good, you gona go to hell.

11-27-2005, 06:45 PM
Short answer is maybe... it really depends on your definition of God.

I believe in the one-ness of everything, and that one-ness is "God" - the universe itself. And we are the universe experiencing itself. I've gone through many different stages of belief in my life. I was raised one of those traditional god fearing people, but it didn't take me long to shake that upbringing. During my teen years I read a lot of books about a lot of different religions, and in the end decided that there is really no religion that is completely for me. Buddhism would have to be the closest to my beliefs now. I believe in karma, more so in a physical way than a metaphysical way, ie action and reaction = physical, action and unrelated reaction = metaphysical

Bob
11-27-2005, 06:51 PM
i don't believe in any specific god or gods, nor the lack of god entirely, in fact i don't particularly believe anything. i wasn't raised with any particular faith, and i haven't yet seen any reason to pick one at any point in my life just yet (atheism included). i'm about as agnostic as you can get, i don't believe in any particular version of god, but i'm not about to say any of them are necessarily false, i just don't know

i figure though, overall, my chances of salvation in the afterlife (if in fact there is one) are fairly slim (i can get into the math if you want), so i just live my life happily now. i figure if this world is the best chance i have to be happy, then i'll just go ahead and be happy here, without letting any particular subscriptions to god keep me down. i'm not about to be an ascetic in the wrong religion!

Documad
11-27-2005, 08:38 PM
I don't believe in god, but I wish I did. I've studied a lot of religions and the more I study, the more impossible it is for me to believe in any divine being.

People try to tell me I'm agnostic (sp?) but I'm awfully sure there's no god. I don't try to convince people there is no god, so I'm not an atheist as I understand the meaning of that word.

I sort of believe in karma or good vibes though, which is puzzling even to me.

What if God is a scientist and every planet is it's petrie dish and God has just been observing our planet like an aquarium... with no interference, just observational study?

Like the Earth's forests, oceans(waves) and atmosphere(evaporation cycle)...life and death is a recycling process...

When we die, there is no heaven or hell, only the physical and spiritual

if you do bad, you come back to life, not as relief but for punishment
if you do good, you come back and live a much better life and if you stay spiritually connected you transcend to a higher world other than the physical

Just remember that if you haven't done anything wrong but are being punished "life's not fair syndrome"...you're paying consequences for your past actions

if lady luck is on your side, and not just once and awhile, there's your gift for your selflessness

I believe that our talents are our superpowers whether it's painting, playing sports, being a genius etc... given to us from our past lives that we keep adding to our shelf like medals of honor

but what we do with these superpowers is what matters... you can be given the power of great knowledge but you can use it to harm or to heal

the end of the world will come when war has ceased and humanity, after returning over and over again, finally understands the concept of love and happiness and respect, tolerance, morals and ethics and puts others before him/her (lb)

i believe in god

i believe that jesus is gods son

i believe that jesus and god and the holy spirit are a three in one god represented by the trinity

i think church is important, but not necessary for a relationship

i believe in heaven and hell, but im not exactly positive who goes where, i think that is for God to decide, not me.

i dont think my faith is the only possible faith and i dont know if it is the only right way to believe, but it works for me.

i dont believe that mary, jesus' mom, stayed a virgin after he was born. i think she lived the life of a normal jewish woman of her time. she married, and had babies. i dont believe she is holy and worthy of worship, she was just chosen of god and special for that reason.

i believe in satan and his history

god exists to so many people world wide, that to not believe is to dismiss the faith of so many others. if he exists to them, as a courtesy to them he exists to me.

personally, i'm all pro-space dust and all that other cosmic jazz.

that's kinda my dad's theory

he thinks that "God" exists, in that its a force in so many lives that technically it is a real thing.....whether it is or is not an actual sentient being somewhere in the cosmos....
