Abuse worse than under Saddam, says Iraqi leader

I love the guardian website and trust it for news before any other website but I cannot help thinking that has been taken out of context. I feel he probably would of said something more like 'escalating to simular abuse as done by saddam' or something.

I disagree with war and I would hate this to turn into another crappy thread of arguing the ifs and buts so use the other 300 threads or so for that, ok?

Although, it's horrible and the comparison it self is a scary one. I feel printing something like that in a paper such as the observer when it seems it might of been taken out of context or lost in translation without seeing the full transcript of the interview is dangerous. However, if it is true and that is what ex prime minister said and suggested. The war is worse than imagined.

I'm sure the absuse is bad, but until the mass graves start piling up, I think that's hyperbole.

I could relay the torture stories I've heard about Saddam's Iraq. I doubt the US has done anything close to that.

I'm not defending any of the horrible things we've done ever there, but I don't buy this.

Hyperbole like the incubator babies? And he is not referring to the US soldiers... If you had read the article, you'd see he pointed the finger at the interior ministry and police forces.

I feel printing something like that in a paper such as the observer when it seems it might of been taken out of context or lost in translation without seeing the full transcript of the interview is dangerous.

A context that alters quite clear statements such as:

'People are doing the same as [in] Saddam's time and worse,'
'It is an appropriate comparison. People are remembering the days of Saddam. These were the precise reasons that we fought Saddam and now we are seeing the same things.'

'We are hearing about secret police, secret bunkers where people are being interrogated,'
'A lot of Iraqis are being tortured or killed in the course of interrogations. We are even witnessing Sharia courts based on Islamic law that are trying people and executing them.'

[If nothing is done], 'the disease infecting [the Ministry of the Interior] will become contagious and spread to all ministries and structures of Iraq's government',

'Iraq is the centrepiece of this region. If things go wrong, neither Europe nor the US will be safe.'

'The Ministry of the Interior is at the heart of the matter. I am not blaming the minister [Bayan Jabr] himself, but the rank and file are behind the secret dungeons and some of the executions that are taking place.'

Seems pretty cut and dry to me. Maybe the Observer was omitting words like "not" and "psyche" from the end of his sentences? Or maybe Allawi was using the "rolleyes" emoticon?

Well obviously it's then 'our fault.

Do you honestly think the 'interior ministry and police' is worse now than it was then?

Under the heading it says Bush is preparing for pulling out the troops. I don't have time to read the article, but wtf? This is the first I've heard about any pull-out.

Someone sum it up for me. kthx.

According to the very pro-US Iyad Allawi, Iraq is as bad-off today as it was under Hussein, at least human rights wise. The Iraqi government is still responsible for torture, executions etc., though it looks like he's not pointing the finger anybody in the higher echelons of power.

As for the withdrawl: http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2005%5C11%5C28%5Cstory_28-11-2005_pg7_3

Chaldeans? Assyrians?

What is this, history class?

But seriously, the article doesn't actually say anything, it's just an overview of Christians in Iraq.

I really hate to compare torture (And shouldn't have to), but I doubt the torture is as bad or widespread.

But hey, it's possible.

I believe that he posted an article some time ago detailing the abuse of Christians in post-invasion Iraq.

IIRC was a Guardian link about the Christians and Islamic minority sections (non-sunnis and non-shias and non-kurds) being hunted down by the deathsquads mentioned in the above articles...

But hell, no like anyone listens to me or anything.
