I did it once. And then whenever I took them out to use in the car, I didn't have time to flip the pages with just one hand (since the other was on the wheel), so I just put it where there was a free slot and now they're messed up again.

tell me about it!
now it's done though I can go direct to find a certain cd instead of thinking I've lent it out

don't get me wrong, it's sweet when it is completely finished. i always tried to seperate by type. for instance i wouldn't put dean martin next to mars volta. so i had all these divisions and shit. after a near nervous breakdown and some therapy i decided to just try and memorize where my stuff is. so it's not really in any type of order, but i know where stuff is. not that any of this makes sense(even to me).

I guess it can take a damn long time (especially if the collection is big), but in the end it's worth it.
When I put stuff in alphabetical order, I feel like I'm indulging in my inner librarian or something like that. ;)
And it just is the easiest way to determine where you put Album X or Album Y. And it's not very hard to maintain at all when it comes to filing new purchases.
To me, there just is no other way.

i once put them alphabetically by artist, then chronologically within the artist.
then i gave up on cds and just used mp3s.

Mine are all in random alphabetical order now....they were in alphabetical order two years ago, then I take one down, pass it around, bring it back and put it in the compilation section (no matter what it was) and now it's a fucking nightmare. But they are all nice & tidy in my IKEA CD towers.

i did mine a few years ago when i got a tower that oculd fit them all. it took me a few hours to get them all, but it was worth it.
the part that sucks is when you are tring to pack them up to move to and from school. that part blows because you have to take them down in order, and get them all to fit into a couple drates evenly, which never works

I do way too much traveling nowadays. I throw the cases away and stack the c.d.s in my carrying cases. I put the c.d. inlays inside the pocket that's on my cases. I do try sometimes to put them in alphabetical order but it doesn't work so well after drunken listening.

I had to rename all of my menu items and weapons. things that just make me step back and ask tough questions like, "what kind of design solution should I use for implementation?"

It does take a long time and then you run out of space. I've extracted mine to mp3's and ogg vorbis now. I still have a few hundred to do and actually started again a few weeks back but stopped. I have CDs everywhere. When I used to DJ though they always was in alphabetical order. I think if I ever DJ again, I'll use a laptop cus it'd take me too long to sort them out again...
...we've become lazy since extracting our CD's but I suppose times change. Once you had to choose which CD's you keep out and others you archive - if you haven't got much space. Now everything is at a touch of a button, just type it in and it plays. Hmmmm, I kinda miss them days but not enough to love the convenience now :D

yeah same. although i don't have as much albums as many of you older ones.
it is a pain moving all the albums one across/down when you get a A to M record.

My CDs are in alphabetical order, then chronological, by artist.
(Except classical music -- that's by composer. So: Herbie Hancock, then Hayden.)
All genres mixed together. I'd hate to have to figure out where to put Nina Simone otherwise.
...after this last move, I did try having my books all higgildy-piggeldy, but it's just too much of a pain to see what I had (and prevent buying used copies of a book twice), or to find what I was looking for. So now they're in order.
THOSE get separated into genres, sort of: poetry, plays, fiction, reference, art books, etc.
