View Full Version : What should my DJ name be?

MrPerfect
11-28-2005, 12:12 AM
For several years I've just been messing around on my turn tables, and not doing show's or anything. Just basically having fun with them.

Well recently, my buddy who has his own band who is pretty well known here in Seattle, wants a DJ for the opening act of his show for about a 10 minute opening type thing.

So I'm looking for a DJ name, as I can't come up with one for the life of me.

My name is Bobby, but the name doesn't nessicarly have to be in my DJ name like "Mix Master MIKE" yanno?

So anybody have any idea's? or any cool, catchy type names?

Thanks for anybody that is willing to help out.

What kind of set are you playing?

What's your groove?

What turns you on?

You need hardware and software.

HARDWARE

You need to take your mixer's line out and feed it into the computer. There are several ways to do this.

The cheap way: Get a "Y" cable that converts RCA (the red an white cable) to a single 1/8" male conector. Then you just take the cable and run it from your mixer's output to your laptop's mic jack.

The good way: Buy an external soundcard for your laptop. A decent one will cost at least a couple hundred bucks. Its should hook up to your laptop by USB, or preferably, firewire. The soundcard will have inputs for various cables depending on what kind you get (1/4" cables, XLR cables, RCA cables). Hook your mixer up to the soundcard. The external soundcard will give you a lot better soundquality and will give you more flexibility with how you want to record. Your laptop's mic jack will suck compared to it.

SOFTWARE

Then you need software to record with. There are cheap programs and expensive ones. The popular ones are pro-tools, logic, reason, acid & soundforge, abelton live, adobe audition, cakewalk, garage band, etc.

If all you want to do is record the sound comming out of your mixer and put it on a website or CD, go cheap. The recording software will record a "wav" file. That is your high quality master file. Most people convert the wav to a real audio or MP3 file to put on the net because those files are smaller and faster to download.

Making a CD is just a matter of taking the wav files and putting them in your CD burning software. It should be fairly easy as long as you have a decent program. The pain in the ass comes when you record an hour long mix and want to make a CD that has track selection. Then you have to go into the master (hour long) wav file and make cuts where you think the best spots are, so that the hour long file is now 20 or so short files. Then you make the CD from the short files, making sure you set your burning software so you don't have a delay between songs. This way you'll have a continuous mix, but you'll also be able to skip through the tracks.

peace

Dood, a DJ Name is about the least important thing to worry about. Just come up with something original and worry about it later. If it sucks, change it. The most important thing is skills. If you come up with a dope name and then really suck, and everyone remembers the dope name along with shitty skills then you'll probably want to ditch the name and get a clean start, haha.

But also, don't just copy what everybody else is doing or try to come up with something that makes you sound cool. Fuck that. Be original. Every time I see a new DJ with some name they've obviously put too much time thinking about to create an image I just think that person is a clown. The worst is when you see "Scratch Master Scott" and then hear the dude and find out that Scott can't scratch to save his damn life. Don't call yourself a master if you aren't a master. You'd be better off calling yourself "Punk Master Bitch" and having decent skills than calling yourself "Blend Master Bobby" when you can't mix right. Nahmean?

P.S. "Sir Skratchalot" is not my DJ name, its just the most wack thing I could think of at the time of signing up to this forum to make fun of myself.

Thats Pretty Good Advice right there, worry about the name later. But if your gonna go for a name that doesnt increase expectations dont go for something too negative (e.g Scratch Master Poo or DJ Bollocks :)
