It's been said that everyone has at least one "Million Dollar Idea" in a lifetime. It only really matters, if you choose to pursue and implement it.

I really kicked myself when the pasta-pro (http://images.google.com/images?lr=&q=pasta-pro%20&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi) was sweeping the nation. Pots, pans and strainers had been around for a couple of million years; before some genius simply morphed the pot lid into a strainer.

Have you ever had a million dollar idea that you slept on, and later saw developed?

Ever attempted to go thru the patent process? Ever invented or modified something simply to make a particular chore easier for yourself?

I'm sitting on 2 sweet ideas right now. I think about them constantly.

i invented the idea for video-jukeboxes not before they were invented, but before i saw one.

when i was young ,i peel potatoes with a knife,so i said to myself that i would invent a decent instrument to peel potato, but it was already done,we where just too much poor to have one :p
oh the same with toaster,we use a foldhanger!

i have a super invention in mind a spacetravel machine time,i know it not knew, but i am gona make it to the market one day! :D

It's not very widespread, but I thought of the idea of a mesh cloth bag that fits over the inside of the door to a clothes washer or dryer, that you could put sneakers in to clean them.

They always used to clunk around the dryer, and knock the door open.

I was only 11 or 12 at the time, and then about 5 years later, I saw them selling it in a catalog.

Flavored pencils. Though they didn't quite take off, I still think it's a possibility.

But they never did a version I sold at school in addition to the other regular flavors: this one was fire, fire, major hot cinammon -- so people who bit their pencils would stop.

They burned.

Ever attempted to go thru the patent process?

Not far, but I looked into it. Never as an adult, though; I should have another look someday.

I know one thing: copyright registration is easy compared to patents.

I know only two people who hold patents -- one guy earned about 20 for his company, though.

Then, you can stand in front of the fridge deciding what looks good for an hour or so before any serious energy loss occurs.

...as a kid, I wrote a science fiction book which had some inventions in it which have come true.

We have debit cards now

-- and also cars have GPS systems (in my book, the GPS systems were used to steer the driver home while he or she snoozed; as suburban expansion had occured, commute times grew longer and it just made sense to nap all the way home while the car drove based on map coordinates plus the signals given off by other hovercars, etc.)

-- someone told me the've heard of water chairs (like water beds, sort of, except chairs, and the water motion acts as a massage); I don't know about that for sure.

-- and the Times Roman font. Yeah, that was me. (y)

:D shameless plug. sorry. I'll stop that one day.

I also had a idea when I was 17 - in 1997 which is when I first got a mobile phone and a Car. I thought wouldn't it be cool if when my car alarm went off it called me or text me but figured someone must of already done this but couldn't find the product for sale.

I'm pretty sure that idea wasn't on the market at the time but I wasn't very business minded then and didn't even look into someone giving me money for my idea. I know they exist now but they have only really recently come out as a major product. Before I dunno. Well I let that one slip. I like my current business, so I'll stick with that.

Taking bets at 8/5 that I'll be back in a call centre within 12 months :(

If I am, I'll start selling weed instead I think. Or I'll pimp myself out.

...people tell me that there are already cell phones out there which have memo or dictation features; that's another idea I had.

It's so... it's so obvious. Why waste time dicking around with postage-stamp size screens when you had actually remind yourself to pick up bread on the way home or remember Mom's birthday or to wash behind your ears or something?

some great ideas here folks, thanks for sharing. oh and rhythm fiction, i can totally understand why you didn't. :p

bigblu: yours is a great example of the classic million dollar idea. your start-up costs would have been very minimal. as a result, your sale price would also have been low. in your case it would have been about moving units. you totally could have sold a quarter million at $9.995 - $14.95 a pop. Damn, you probably could have even assembled them in-house, thus eliminating any labour costs.

az: your idea reminds me of how my mom got me to quit biting my fingernails. she told me that's there was trace amounts of fecal matter and other bacteria under my fingernails. i stopped immediately and never went back.

a decade ago i slipped a beer bottle wet-suit onto a sink chain i had around my neck. if offered me hands fee operation to collect firewood, bbq or illustrate the size of the fish i didn't catch. in the year 2000 I stumbled onto an ebay auction selling them for $14.95.

the problem iwth the idea is that it would esentially eliminate the shelf on the door, because to keep it you would require a sperate system to cool that part of the fridge.

however, i would buy a fridge if it had a clear door

true. perhaps this idea needs to be implemented at the factory.

anyone hear about the latest storage device(s) from Maxell?

"...approximately half a million 300-page books can be stored on a single disc."

Optical Disc Features 1.6 TeraBytes of Storage Capacity and 120 MBPs Transfer Rate

FAIR LAWN, NJ -- Maxell Corporation of America, the technological leader in advanced recordable media, and InPhase Technologies are bringing a revolutionary technology to market - holographic media. With uncompressed storage capacities achieving 1.6 TeraBytes per disk and data rates as high as 120 MBPs, holographic technology is a true breakthrough in optical media. These features, along with a long archival life, make holographic media a compelling choice for storage and archival requirements.

Holographic data storage is superior to existing disc and hard drive technologies, and is also competitive against tape technologies in capacities and transfer rate. In addition, it offers a 50+ year media archive life and random data access. Finally, the media is expected to have the lowest cost per gigabyte of any commercial quality removable storage.

"Holographic media makes it possible for millions of pages of information and high definition images to be held on one small, relatively inexpensive disc," said Steven Pofcher, senior marketing manager at Maxell. "Imagine having a person's entire medical history, complete with MRI images, or storing a broadcast network's entire HD Library on a single disc. These are both possible with holographic technology, which has such large capacity that approximately a half million 300-page books can be stored on a single disc."

Holographic recording technology utilizes intersecting signal and reference laser beams to store data in a number of 3D hologram images capable of saving hundreds of data pages in a single location. One 5 inch-diameter optical disc can store up to 150 million pages - more than 63 times the capacity of DVD. Also, with holographic recording, a multiple of form factors, such as discs, cards, etc., and laser wavelengths (red, green, and blue) can be used.

"Combining high storage densities and fast transfer rates with durable, reliable, low cost media, Holographic technology is poised to become a compelling choice for next-generation storage and content distribution needs," said Liz Murphy, vice president of marketing for InPhase Technologies. "Unlike other technologies that record one data bit at a time, holography allows a million bits of data to be written and read in parallel with a single flash of light. This enables transfer rates significantly higher than current optical storage devices."

The first generation of holographic media with 300 GB of storage capacity and a 20 MBPs Transfer Rate is scheduled for release in late 2006. For more information on Maxell products, please visit Maxell's Web site, www.maxell-data.com.

300Gb of storage on one disc would be sweet.

The problem being instead of me losing 2.5 seasons of Southpark by losing a DVD, I would lose all southpark, simpsons futurama, family guy and and anything else I cared to keep on it. But as long as someone else has a copy you can also burn it back I suppose. I could could get all my mp3's on 1/3 of a disc. WOW. Imagine if I had a drive to read it on my car. All my music in my car, wow. Same with a discman. Heh, I hope it gets rid of ipods cus it'd be out of date.

A world without ipods would be a better world.

Anyway....I pretty much quit wearing lipstick a long time ago because it tastes awful and guys don't want to kiss cosmetic covered lips. So I thought hey, "wouldn't it be great if they made edible cosmetics for nyphomaniac girls who wanna look good AND taste good while screwing?" And then that no-talent ass-clown Jessica, came out with her "desserts" cosmetic line. fucking whore!

As a kid a friend had an idea of two lids on a mustard, mayo, or ketchup jar. That way, when you got to the dregs, you could just unscrew the bottom lid. I saw them in the store years ago. Then someone just made the top of the jar wider -- so you can fit your hand and a knife in there -- Brilliant!

follow me on this.

an organization of compooter nerds that are available 24 hours a day for tech support and in-home assistance. all for a reasonably cheap (cheaper than corporate tech support) price. they'd each go through a rigorous testing phase in which they'd be judged by their peers and deep background checks and such before certification of Dorkitude. because, let's face it, we all turn to our brother/cousin/neighbor's kid etc. who's "good with computers" for our comp problems. and this way these kids could be putting their skillz to good use while helping people that are completely tech clueless. all parties would benefit. it'd be very well-regulated and organized.

yea well how much does a gps capable phone cost godamit, this would just be available to anyone who has cellular phone, being basically everyone, and it would be like a hotline you call for less than a dollar per call and there would be an operator and theyd be like "now go two blocks after Peach street and then turn right, mmhmm, yes, then go right again and youre there", and then youd be like "my god, couldnt have gotten here without you PHONEMAP"
