you just can't explain something like this to someone who doesn't smoke. Ciggarettes are satisfying, that's the simplest way to put it. there are certain things, like coffee for example that just compliment cigarettes. and a couple of drags on a fag after a nice big meal is just so satisfying. everyone knows they are bad and that they shouldn't smoke, but people develope addictions to it. I mean come on, why do people do Herion? it's so obviously bad for them...but it makes them feel good doesn't it? Alcohol is a another one. People smoke cigarettes because it feels good to them.


I quit several years ago and I use to chain smoke. and even know, once in a while, I still in enjoy a few puffs on my boyfriends cigarette when my belly is nice and full after a big meal.

I've quit before and will have to again eventually, but it really does take A LOT of will power. More than you would realise. Apparently cigarettes are harder to give up than herion. I don't know the source but I definately heard/read it somewhere.

I agree that smoking is lame, but so are a lot of things that people do that are extremely unhealthy for themselves.

If we are going to attack people for smoking, we should attack people for eating fast food. Both things are proven to be extremely bad for you, cut your life span short, are addictive, etc. etc. The only reason people complain more about smoking is that it smells to them.

I used to argue that it was okay with food and the like because at least that's "nourishment", something your body "needs", but now I see them as one and the same.

I've tried talking people out of using tanning beds, and sun exposure without SPF for that matter. I've had a couple biopsies that were precancerous, and still no one listens to me. It is similar to trying to convince someone to quit smoking. The difference is that when it comes to tanning, people are like, "It's sooo bad for you, you'll get cancer...but we're still all going to do it anyway because it looks good." It's really the same risk as smoking but with a different societal response, which is annoying and ignorant.

And as you said, there are many of those types of things. Smoking just seems to be the major scapegoat of them all.

I saw an ad in the paper that paid smokers $20 an hour to participate in a study on lung cancer. I bet the smokers are just really desparate for money. Though now they're in the studies, I bet they're just spending all their hard-earned test-bunny dollars on cartons. :(

No, I'd have no problem with smokers if it didn't bother me. If people want to eat fast food, let them. If they want to fake bake, sure, knock yourself out. It's once it starts to bother me and my health that I have a problem with it.

My best friends from high school all smoked. They'd smoke in her van during the winter without rolling down the windows. Even in the summer when they were rolled down, it still clung to everything. It got the smell all over me, my hair, my clothes, everything. Even when I took them for rides in my car, their smell would stick to the cloth. Not to mention it irritated my eyes and my lungs being around them.

I don't see them that often anymore because they're smokers. It's very sad, because I love them dearly, but the smoke really bothered me physically. Don't even get me started on D.C. bars. I go in smelling like flowery perfume, I leave with watery eyes and smelling of nicotine. I'm not going to be able to go out to bars anymore if this continues. It sucks. If it's just going to kill them, then whatever. But second-hand smoke not only bothers people, it'll kill them too. It's inconsiderate.

Absolutely agree. I'd never own an SUV. I wish they'd crack down on them more too. Also these freakin' dump trucks they have that spew all this black shit into the air. I always manage to somehow get stuck behind one and then forget to put my air on recirculate until it's too late and all their nasty disgusting smoke is in my car. They need to work on improving their engines too, because black smoke coming from vehicles = inefficient use of gas.
