I think Learning to Fly might be my favorite.
But he has a lot of good ones.

You know the longer version of that song is very cool, and the opening to that song,
Eddie waited till he finished high school
He went to Hollywood, got a tattoo
He met a girl out there with a tattoo too
You know that would get anybody hooked.
Mike Cambell is a great "Rock&Roll" guitarist.

You Tell Me.
It's one of my favorite songs by anyone. Ever.
It's not the song, it's the performance, and it's about Benmont and Mike, not Tom, but whatever.
True story. Last time I saw Tom, he didn't do Breakdown. I was so confident it would be in the encore, that I stood there aghast when the house lights went up.

I like the bootleg live version where the audience sings the the first chorus and refrain word for word, Tom listens, then deadpans, "You're gonna' put me out of a job!"

Another true story. Last time I saw Tom Petty, the kids all liked the newer stuff, like his solo stuff best. Which is INSANE. Eventually everyone sat down.
Eventually, Mike hit the excellent opening riff for Woman in Love (It's Not Me) and I lept to my feet, letting out a big woo hoo. All by myself. My friend laughed so hard she couldn't breathe while trying to explain that the kids didn't know that one. :o

Huh? Which song? Wrong what? You've been hitting the bottle.
I don't make mistakes unless it's the Phil Spector thread.

Learning to Fly is a Huey Lewis song.

Don't even go there. Tom means more to me than Elvis. (He used to, anyway)
EDIT: I haven't gotten over that last News revelation. And I believe that you once tried to tell me that Bill Wyman wrote a Stones song.

You are Jammin' me now. Learning to fly has Elvis references in it because "Huey" also Loved Elvis.
Bill Wyman wrote the Jumping Jack Flash riff, lyrics are Jagger/Richards all high watching the mailman who's name happened to be Jack. Kieth was a little lit and added the adjectives.
Nobody likes Tom Petty more than me.

I'd have to go with Learning To Fly or Free Fallin'. Not sure which one, but I'm definitely going with one of his songs about being up in the air.

It's not one of my favorite Tom Petty songs, but I bet the song "Don't Do Me Like That" is just a blast to play live. Everything about that song is momentum and fun.

I was going to pick Damn the Torpedoes in that underrated thread. I would never say it's one the best albums I own, but it's got back to back decent songs. Plus it has You Tell Me. And Refugee was overplayed, but it's a perfect single. Refugee was one of the first videos I ever saw -- on late night, local TV.
I was the only person who went to that Dylan/The Dead extravaganza just to see the Heartbreakers. I win.

Bob, you've been a little less Don Cheadle and a little more Cedric The Entertainer lately.

...I think it's probably either "The Waiting" or "The Best of Everything."

I am a little disconcerted now. Huey Lewis wrote Learning to Fly? You're fucking with me right? This is because of the Everett comment, isn't it?
I would have said Learning to Fly. But I like Mary Jane's Last Dance an awful lot.

I also kind of like Don't Come Around Here No More. I'm not sure if it's mostly because of the Alice in Wonderland-themed video though. The Waiting is another great one.
It is tough to decide...but I think I'm still sticking with Learning to Fly for my top favorite.

Tom Petty had one helluva run 79-93
I proudly own his "Playback" DVD and make no bones about it.
Getting to the question at hand~Without a doubt "Face in the Crowd" is one of the best songs ever recorded. It's one of those songs that when it comes on, I stop whatever it is I'm doin and take pause. Don't know what he's singing about but my version is that him and his better half are gettin ready to go out in a hail of bullets and he's wishing that she wasn't a part of it
