A friend and me got into an argument about the difference. To me, rap started in the 80's and stopped in the late 90's and that is where it went main stream and hip hop became the new word for rap. He disagrees with me by saying rap was hip hop from the beginning.

my dad thinks some white chick started rap.
this was my face...
what exactly is the technical difference between rap and hip hop then? i've never figured it out. are they two different genres of music, or is it a "rap is something you listen to hip hop is something you live" type thing? or is it just a trick that black people play on white people to confuse us?
if that's what it is, it's working you jerks

maybe he's refering to blonde? or that name game song?
hip hop is the culture
mcs rap
graffers graffitti
djs dj
bboys break...well in fact a bboy can do all the above
The temple of hip hop goes on to list more elements of the culture 9 in total..
Emeecing, Djing, B-Boys, B-Girls, Graffiti, street knowledge, street language, street fashion, beatboxing and street entrepreneurialism.
rapping is what hip hopers doo....
so in a sense rap is hip hop as graffitti is hip hop

Fab 5 Freddy and Blondie - Rapture.
i read the title of this and said "what the fuck..." out loud.
Monsieur said it already.
Hip Hop = culture = MCing, DJing, Graffiti, Breaking (breakdancing)
Rap = well, you could just say it's MCing pretty much with DJs

Well, saying 'hip-hop' instead of 'rap' improves your 'white boy street cred' by 3 points. That's why I call it hip-hop.

Fab 5 Freddy and Blondie - Rapture.
Although it's clearly not the 'origin' of rap, I would argue that actually this record had a huge influence in the crossover of rap music into popular mainstream culture that shouldn't really be underestimated.

actually, rap can trace its origins to square dancing and the calling out of dance moves to the beat of the music

Hip hop aint no freakin lifestyle. It's the corporatization of rap. Back in the day, when Biz Markie was rappin "make the music with your mouth" - THAT is rap. Today, the Ying Yang Twins, Lil John and the like, THAT is hip hop. I really feel almost as if Rap is dead, and this crappy hip hop thing has taken over.

An early version of Beats, Rhymes and Life found the 25-year-old Queens, N.Y., native uttering the Rap blasphemy, "Hip-Hop could never be a way of life/ It doesn't teach you how to raise a child or treat a wife." The lines have since been removed because, Q-Tip says, "I think I spoke hastily. ... What I should have said is just that there's another way of life that supersedes Hip-Hop, because there are traits in Hip-Hop that don't hit a code of moral standards."

I must be retatrded because I thought there was a clear difference, I thought rap was that, someone rapping, and hip-hop was more of rap with a dance beat. All I know is I can't listen to the radio anymore because current popular hip-hop artist or what ever they call themselves suck they have no conviction they crap about candy and the mall, it makes me want to vomit and that is deffinatly not rap.

Busta Rymes in Leaders of the New School had a comment about that saying something to the effect "Rap is Business and Hip Hop is culture"
I don't know the exact quotes but it would fit nicely here to clear up this whole mess

This thread is supremely stupid and pointless. This is how I see it:
Hip-hop is the street culture from whence the music comes (which also includes graffiti, breakdancing, and sometimes gangs, drugs and shit), rap is another name for MCing. So a track which features an MC can be called "a rap song", but it is still music from the hip-hop genre.
